Here's the Optimus AUX final pre-production prototype in aluminium case (Verbarius is in the background):

Optimus AUX is to be priced around 650 US$.

I'd pay $300-$350 USD. I wonder if they do any market research before they decide to take a product to market? It's a pretty common thing for a consumer goods company to do. I doubt most people would pay more than $200 for something like this... then again, maybe it's only meant for a small number of people.

Fully agree. I pretty much need one more than even want one, but there is no way in hell I'm paying $650 for it. $250, I'd jump on it. $300 I'd hesitate but buy it anyway. $650, I'll buy a G11 or G15 and forget the pretty keys.

It's like any new product though, they gouge the suckers, then drop prices once they stop selling at idiotic prices.

Actually Optimus Maximus is $1800+

But I'm loving every second of it! It's amazing!

I am glad to see the fast progress of this project :-)

The Optimus Maximus provides faster working and a better workflow with applications which are not used very often. But in daily work I primary need the Buttons on the left to show informations and starting applications.
So the AUX provides exactly what I often need :-) and that in small space which makes a mobile use possible with a laptop.

The price is not that big. You pay ofer 100 US$ for a Logitech G15 Keyboard with some extra keys wher you never knows which function is configured on which key and a low resolution Black/white display which is far away from the extra keys. And remember, Logitech produces thousands of the G15. The Optimus Maximus and the AUX are niche products with smaller lots.
Every costumer shoud keep this in minde!

I agree. I'd be looking for this to augment my G15 since I have no idea what I programmed some of those buttons to do. I know I can look in the software, but this doesn't help me get things done faster. I hope the software for this supports multiple pages of hotkeys so the device can be configured for different applications/uses with a keystroke or two.

Do you think it's priced high because it's a niche market, or it's a niche market because of the pricing?

Even at double or triple the price of a G15 the Maximus would outsell them, easily. At 18 times, they simply put it out of reach for the average consumer. Perspective: That's higher than a lot of people paid for their computer. I tell people I have an $800 monitor and they think I'm nuts. $1800 for a keyboard is absolutely outlandish. $650 for a keypad is even worse given they already had the technology invented and just created a different board for it.

any plans to upgrade all the Optimus hardware to USB 3.0 (which looks as though it's introduction will occur relatively soon) ?

greater power (maybe lose the AC connection, which would be very helpful), and greater power efficiency

"It also has better power output, 900 milliamps compared to 100 milliamps with USB 2.0. That means up to four devices can be charged from a single USB port and charged faster."

Optimus Maximus used about 114W (http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/faq/) and utilizes a higher voltage (19V compared to 5V which USB offers).

Doubt it, the framerate is probably more a limit of hardware refresh rates than data bandwith

Even compared to the price of the Maximus, which is an entire keyboard, I think 650$ are too many bucks for a 15key pad.

The price of the maximus is too high for my pockets, but I always thought it was a reasonable price compared to what you were offering.
This is not the case.
You have the technology, you have the knowledge from the development of maximus, it's only a restyling of your product.

---

An entire Keyboard it's a luxury that could be afforded only by 2 kind of people:
1) ppl with a lot of money to waste,
2) ppl in extreme need for that.

A keypad with the same concept would apply in MANY more situations and I think many more people would be interested in that piece.
E.g.: just imagine all people who play MMORPG games; they need a lot of "custom function" buttons (only World of Warcraft count 11.500.000 players); your pad would be the paradise.

I'd love to buy one of those, but paying no more than 350$.

Pricing
(Anonymous)
2009-01-29 10:57 pm UTC (link)
I agree with some others about the price. I would expect this to cost around 3-400 USD but above that just doesn't seem necessary. I can understand wanting to recoup the presumably high cost of prototyping and development, especially on such a small scale. But in the 300 dollar price range you could sell many more units and therefore may end up making more money in the end, albeit over a longer stretch of time.

Just my .02. Maybe it's totally disillusioned...
