hmm, I like the flush key setup, that should be kinda interesting.
The big "enter" key will be the bane of my existance :)

Since it's not OLED, what type of display are you figuring on using?

"It is obvious that 100 small displays are more expensive than 1 big display. So we're concentrating our attention on designing a keyboard based on Upravlator idea.

Our goal this year (besides starting production of the new Mini) is to create a prototype of a keyboard with transparent keys overlayed on a single display. Production should start later this year, or in the beginning if 2009.

First real thing will most probably be based on a TFT-display. Hopefully, this full-color keyboard will retail for under U$800.
"

This is how they're doing the no OLED keyboard. It's just one big display with keys overlaid on top of it.

but: *when* will you actually release a keyboard with another key between Left-Shift and Z, so that German (and other) people can actually *use* your products? In 2022?

Nice keyboard, and while I definitely like the big enter (as that's the type I am used to), I seriously miss the key that I usually have between shift and Z. Nice with the other extra keys though.

I hate keyboards with that kind of enter key so much that I refuse to buy one. I prefer the '\' key above the enter key with a longer delete key just to the left of the '=' key.

Did you noticed a very important hardware upgrade?
It is the wide space bar display.
I would like to have a bigger 'delete' key, too.

I will keep my fingers crossed that the new space bar display will not increase the MSRP.

If you look closely, you can see that only some keys have displays. I have a bad feeling that the top row keys are the only ones that will allow multiple colors.

My favourite layout..
(Anonymous)
2008-05-31 05:39 am UTC (link)
While I'm probably part of a miniscule minority, this is the layout I dream of.. http://www.typematrix.com/ezr2030/images/qwerty_new.gif

In everyday use, I have 0 need for the numpad. And I've never felt that the offset keys are more comfortable than a proper grid would be.

Also, as it would need a smaller screen, wouldn't it be cheaper?

Being myself and a gamer foremost I really dont need a mile wide spacebar, windohs keys, arrow keyes, and I dont play flightsims so don't need any numpad.

I think it's time ppl could buy a kit and make their own dimensions of the buttons even.

I like the concept but the design (the whole black and white) isn't that nice it looks very old fashioned. The delete key is a bit too small but I love the music control buttons.

Different versions

Different key layouts should be very easy to produce. I imagine where the whole black bezel comes out as one assembly and you drop in a new key layout (also good for cleaning).

I'm sorry, $800 for a keyboard? I guess I just don't get it. The article does nothing to explain what is so special about this one to those of us who may normally think that $99 for a wireless keyboard is a lot of money.

I AGREE!!!!
It could be modules... two sides... or a common module that could be adjusted to each side of the keyboard... I understand that it would have to have different power sources... But it could be sold as main module and extra left(right) module...

The touch version also could be just a center piece of the modules...
Normal keyboard on each side and a touch panel in the center...
anyway... that's my opinion only!
And you guys are great!! I can barely wait to start making enough money to be able to purchase your products! (lol)

So can you drill holes through an lcd screen? The other option is using displays that are as wide as the keyboard and only one row high so that the keys can straddle the display top and bottom.

As far as key layout, I believe it is easier to adapt to a single height enter key than a half size backspace, but anything is possible. The music keys are nice.

B&W LCDs with RGB LED backlights
(Anonymous)
2008-06-03 12:39 am UTC (link)
Why don't they just do a B&W LCD with RGB LEDs behing each key? Then you can get cheap keys which have a variable graphic and are colour coded.

As nice as full colour is, the extra degrees of detachment of a screen which does not move with each key press will undermine the keyboard's success.

I also agree that this design is a little 70s. Though I like it, it does not match anything contemporary.

Functional keys
(Anonymous)
2008-06-03 07:09 am UTC (link)
Why in all your keyboards the functional keys (F1..F12) are grouped into groups of two instead of four keys? Isn't the Optimus Popularis keyboard a standard layout version of the Optimus keyboards family? In the standard 101/104 keyboard layout the functional keys are grouped by four keys.

This project reminds me of a similar story of the Jim's (founder and ex-owner of Oakley) new company - RED DIGITAL CAMERA www.red.com Their project also revolutionary, has a stunning design and now actually in a mass production. Look, this is interesting. ;)

Optimus brand
(Anonymous)
2008-06-04 01:29 pm UTC (link)
As you keep adding "Optimus" products, don't you fear that the "Optimus" brand could end up "eating" the "Art.Lebedev" brand?
You risk being remembered as "the guys who do the Optimus keyboards" instead of "that great design studio from Russia" :-)
Maybe it's time to create the "Optimus keyboards" brand and separate the whole project from the studio.
Just a thought...

You've deleted my last post!

So....You've deleted my post and thread about what I thought would be your next keyboard concept. Perhaps you feel that an electrophoretic display on mechanical keys would be too cheap to produce compared to your LDC display. Okay I can live with that. We don't want to put other, perhaps better, ideas into the minds of people that are not looking at the alternative technologies now, do we? While I'm all in favour of your LCD concept, I personally think the electrophoretic display is the best way forward for the next-gen of keyboards in the next year or two. Mainly because: 1) it has ultra-low power consumption. 2) uses no power when the display is static. 3) is cheaper to produce. 4) it's durable - you can spill coffee on it and bash its keys. and 5) it has quite a long life. Watch out folks! Now this post will mysteriously disappear - when YOU and I least expect it. -- Dean, UK

Key Layout

This Key Layout is really great!

I don't know other countries layouts,
but in german there are only 14 Keys in the "numeric row" -> backspace could be a double sized key.

Then it would be exacly like my current Keyboard!
