is there a reason why you use 50% dithering to achieve the transparency effect (more visible in the other icon), and not just the alpha channel? (like, normal color, 50% alpha -- should look better on lower resolution displays...)

This icon is a step back. While this is more artsy and imaginative, it is less clear of what it is about. This design is self-indulged in the way that it expects users to know that mesh in the middle implies the OLED of the keyboard keys.

Since this is just an utility for a hardware but not a software suite, I don't see the reason of not going for a simplistic language (i.e. show a keyboard key, which is distinctive of this particular keyboard), but going for a stylized interpretation instead.
