Optimus mini 3.0
We're starting to work on a completely new design of Optimus mini. Main direction: to have something like 'mini Tactus'. One small sensor display divided into three (maybe more) zones.

On the top of our wish list is wireless capabilities (a lot of people use Optimus mini three to control Power Point presentations).

Even when not plugged directly in to the computer Optimus mini should be able to receive signal. Thus one will be able to have AC-powered wireless PC informer anywhere within the Bluetooth range.

Pictures will be available soon.

I thought this could already be accomplished with a Bluetooth-enabled, WindowsMobile-OS phone.

No, a Windows Mobile phone doesn't need AC-power to work ;)

Well done about Optimus Maximus, I guess took so much time of you guys.

...but dont you think its time to develop a 64bit drivers for optimus mini? so many users just can´t use the hardware in his brand-new computers :(

many thanks and keep up the good work!

Of course NO! Why would they do that? Spend lot of efforts for gadget thay already sold?.

64bit drivers will be shipped with a version 3. People, who can afford new hardware sure can afford new $$$ gadget :).

OM3 v3.0
(Anonymous)
2008-03-11 05:34 pm UTC (link)
Mr. Lebedev,

My name is Jason Evans, you may or may not remember that I sent you an email a couple of years ago telling you how excited I was to get an OM3. I am a huge fan of the idea, and the design is beautiful. I only wish I could afford a Maxius. I have had an OM3 v2.0 for a couple of years now, and I never use it. It is sitting in a box in my closet. I use Windows XP x64 edition, and the OM3 v2.0's drivers are completely incompatible. I have closely watched the development of the Optimus product line, and think it is revolutionary, but I am sorely disappointed that all development of new drivers (let alone plugins) has come to a screeching halt with regards to the OM3 v2.0. The current version is still 1.0.33 (beta) as it has been since I received mine in 2005. In my opinion this project has not been finished since you have left all operating systems other than standard Windows XP and OSX out in the cold. I encourage you to please revive this project, and please please provide working drivers for other operating systems before trying to break new ground with the next version. At the very least you should make the v3.0 drivers provide this functionality (Windows XP, XP x64, OSX, and some form of Linux...Ubuntu). I look forward to being able to use my OM3 again sometime, but for now it is boxed.

Thank you,
Jason Evans

If you want to use it so much, grab the Windows DDK and write the driver yourself. AFAIK, they released a document that described the I/O protocol quite a while ago.

Melted Optimus Mini
(Anonymous)
2008-03-11 08:23 pm UTC (link)
Ok so don't freak out by me posting this. I'm in charge of purchasing new "cool" hardware like the optimus Mini for possible use on some of our work projects. So i purchased the Optimus Mini approx a month ago. I'd mostly leave the keyboard on for a few days and it would get a nice rest every now and then for about a day. Coworkers come by occasionally to press the buttons and check it out. Today was a bit different, one of the actual keys just melted. I'm not exactly sure what caused but It was simply sitting at my desk and no liquids where involved. I have yet to contact "art lebedev" the company i bought it from but I just wanted to give you all a heads up. Not sure if this is a common issue but for the $170 we paid for this including shipping, i'm sure it would piss off a few people if your keys melt. If anyone has any info on if this is a known issue or what could have caused it then let me know. It was plugged right into my HP usb port. The Optimus Mini actually still works, except it has an ugly black blotch on the key that melted.

I baught some 15 OM3 as of today, and they are used by clients for specific access we developed. Everything is ok even with non specialist users. The only problem is that specific plugins need a lot of RAM. Those OM3 are in production since the month of march, 2007. We're planning to order some more mini keyboards and we're finishing developping silent install, software, etc... because there is lack of softs for this stuff. That's the reason why I will wait before testing and buying the maximus keyboard.

Middle ground

I'd like to see something in the middle ground between the 3-key Mini and the many-key Maximus. Something like this -- http://www.piengineering.com/xkeys/xkdesk.php -- but with displays.

One of our media-related applications supports customers using the 20-key X-keys for control. I'd love to support a keypad that let us show thumbnails of the media.

Yes please!!

Surely all the hard work that you have put into the Optimus Maximus configurator can be used to make an Updated OM3 configurator.
