Optimus 1x3
Chances are we'll have to rename Optimus-113. Now it looks more like Optimus-103.

Hopefully not the 10 'random function' keys on the left side of the keyboard.

If you look at the concept their are 10 extra key for shortcuts, I think its those.

Actually the concept has 123 keys, so we'd be losing 20 of them, not just 10 :|

How do you come to 123? I cound 113 keys on the concept...

Surely the function keys would be great, but perhaps the keyboard a bit to width.

I too see 123 keys on the Optimus Concept. Did I miss a redo of the design?

10 side function keys
1 big key above the Function keys

14 \
15 \
14 }Letter/Numbers
13 /
8 /

1 Enter
13 F keys + Escape
13 Arrows and the standard 9 keys above it
17 Numpad keys
4 Media keys

Total 123 Keys...

Hello mrmikey83!

Yes, you are right, I'm sorry: I really don't know what I have forgotten last time counting, but there are 123 keys on the concept using following picture:
http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/keyb_001.jpg

This way it would be very interesting, of course, getting a comment from tema about this: Did the concept changed or how did you count 113 keys on the concept?

How can you be an efficient typist if you keep changing the keys around. Reply Highly Ranked Phil Perman @ May 20th PM Everyone bashes it for the price, but I think its great that such a brilliant concept is finally being put into production.

I really hope it's not over something stupid like an issue of how much the keyboard will cost. I think people who want to buy a LCD keyboard really won't care over an increase too much.

Back on the 15th it was stated that the 113 was already in production, now its suddenly become the 103. Is there any point in the near future where we can get any definites on this keyboard?! If it is indeed in production maybe a picture? Anything about the keyboard as a whole?

I apologize for the tone of this post, but as the subject states, I'm rather frustrated and disappointed.

If you kill those shortcut keys, I have no reason to buy it. That's the single reason to buy it. Hell. I'd rather buy JUST those ten keys in a compact unit. So Here's hoping you're axing a different ten keys instead.

I love the shortcut keys - but if I had to chose between them and a numpad, I'd definetly vote for the numpad to stay. I use it mainly for cursor movement (programmer's habit?) and just could not live without them.

they could just add 3 modes to the numpad.
- numpad mode
- cursor mode
- shortcut/function mode

pretty simple and not a big change to a usual numpad.

you could probably get away with using number Num keys to function as shortcuts.

Put a small scroll wheel there and rotate shortcuts.
Similar to Ipod scrollwheel design.

Oh my god yes! a little capacitence scroll wheel to the right of the numpad would rock! i would buy that! even if you just make it fire arrow key up/down messages!

or.. perhaps the arrow keys could be ditched all together, spinning your finger around could go up down, and tapping the sensor could work like the old keys!

is it too late to get this feature?

Apple propably pattened the hell out of that design :-)

But I have yet to see a comfortable scroll wheel on the keyboard.
It could easily do multiple functions such as volume control, shortcut rotation, page scroll, etc.

the way I see it - one button and a scroll wheel below it.
you rotate the wheel ->image changes, and to activate whatever is selected(shown) - simply tap the button.

Just my 2 cents on that.

wouldn't those scroll devices be patented more by the manufacturer than apple, who buy the units and use them in pods

Not sure.
I belive Synaptics was responsible for design used in Ipods.
There are variations of that design out there. Sandisk uses it...

Quick launch keys can go...
(Anonymous)
2006-10-26 09:20 pm UTC (link)
Why do you need the 10 quick launch keys when any key on the keyboard can change function and display whenever you want?

I've had a few keyboards with those extra application keys. They sound like a good idea at first, but I didn't really use them and before long I stopped running the extra .exe required to make them work altogether.

I expect many people would be happy with a single 'function lock' key that switches the numpad between the usual and the quicklaunching apps?

"Why do you need the 10 quick launch keys when any key on the keyboard can change function and display whenever you want?" ?

Because I use ALL the keys on my keyboard. I would not be willing to sacrifice one for the sake of a shortcut except in very specific and limited situations.

That would be "Optimus-(what is ergonomic in Russian?)" ;-)

And I think you're right - keep those extra keys!

It can't be that hard to keep them there... is it because in that case you broke the standard-design of keyboard-manufacturing? But hey - you already did that by making of each key a tv-screen! So *why* should you ditch that keys?

I will not buy this anymore .. I was so happy a keyboards comes with the inovatitive displays on a keyboard, and theses extra keys. The first extra keys on a keyboard that could become standard, because they aren't such coltish (dallying? can't find the word).

another issue: the angle isn't adjustable, not very ergonomic. keyboards have to be as flat as possible.
