Optimus Tactus keyboard concept
This is the keyboard we want to produce in 2008. Actual width will depend on the TFT display we'll use.

If it turns out to be nearly as powerful or useful as this demo that could be really cool.

As long as it has tactile feedback

I'm not a fan of touchscreens. i need some tactile feedback. Nothing like pressing down a physical key!

I knew this it was only matter of time. The question is, will it be comfortable enough for tiping. Hard flat things do not dispose to contact, due to their unfriendly surfaces.

Clearly, you're insane. That said if you could get around the tactile feedback issues, it'll probably be a more practical proposition than the Maximus by virtue of only having one display to deal with instead of umpteen.

Fuck that assholes saing "Ohh tactile feedback, uhh vaporware" or "ehh, you never gonna sell one"!
Freaks like you guys at the Studio make that motherfucking "progress" and shit
Respect for having enough guts to show such stuff to public
Good luck

Hate to break this to you guys, but Apple have bought companies such as FingerWorks (http://www.fingerworks.com/) with their Touchstream (about 4 years ago) and created their own patents to cover this exact technology. Creating this product WILL get you sued and you WILL lose.

The Optimus Maximus keyboard is an excellent product. I am still talking myself into buying one (I'm an extremely good touch-typist, so I just don't know why I would want to look at my keys), but I love the product. Please don't put too much money/effort into this concept until you get some patent lawyers to look at all Apple and Microsofts patents on this technology.

Great that you are the first to make that idea true.

Concerning tactile feedback, we read and hear everywhere the same things: "what about tactile feedbackblablabla...".

There is no problem with tactile feedback:
1 - This kind of keyboard will not be dedicated to writers...
2 - Technologies will be available soon (think about a pixel that localy bump on a surface instead of generating RGB light).
Maybe Mr Lebedev and his crew already have some great ideas for tactile feedback.
3 - On one hand you loose the tactile feedback. But on the other hand you gain such amazing possibilities of interactions that we don't care of this loss.

I’m not sure but it is not a mass market product, I thought the same thing about Optimus Maximus, I still doubt whether I’m right or wrong but, you know a keyboard isn’t a thing you are actually looking at when using, it should be your second or third hand, maximus have a tactile response and small screens - may help if you are not sure whether you remember or not where you put this very function on your keys. Full touch screen display (Wacom like) with the interfaces and software ready, using the full potential (the actual future by the way, and as a design studio you know that, you probably know what a web will be in lets say 10 years, you the ones who design it, so you know better than me) is a good thing, a display (a thing meant to look at) used as a keyboard is probably a steam punk. When you have a Wacom display and lets say virtual keyboard it is OK because you work in the same space, but optimus-tactus is a separated peripheral device…
Trying to apply new technology with the old thinking inside the box is a steam punk… I may be wrong, I like most of your products so may be I just don’t understand something.

If the software (and the hardware) allow for animations such as sliders, scrollers and such, then I can see this as a very useful tool for video and audio editing.

The biggest problem would be the sensitivity. If the touchscreen is going to be as sensitive as the iPhone screen (which is REALLY sensitive) then I can see problems with games. And you won't be able to rest your fingers on the keyboard.

It'd be great if this thing would have a pressure system. Where you can assign keys (or perhaps sliders and such) to be sensitive at a soft touch. But also keys (for games, perhaps) where they won't react unless you actually 'press', but still be able to rest your fingers on the keys.

Other wise, I'm actually looking forward to this.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper with the Optimus Maximus to just have a screen like this (doesn't need to be touch screen), and to overlay a load of transparent keys? Rather than having individual screens for each key?

if the entire face of it is a touchscreen and the screen can go away depending on the application, then i'll consider it. until then, it's cool, but completely useless.

I like this. I donno about the functionality, but I like the "out of the box" thinking, like someone else suggested. We all are so used to certain aspects of our every day life, that we never really question WHY we do certain things, or how they're done, just that we like it.

Tactile feedback....Yes I like it, I'm quite used to it. I haven't used anything besides it for more than a few minutes at a time, so I can't really say how I'd feel about NOT having it. However, I'm sure, give it to someone that hasn't used anything else, let them get used to it, and then give them a tactile feedback device, and they'll hate the clicking. Why does it have to be so loud?

People in general are resistant to change, but we do for betterment of ourselves, however slowly. Sometimes, leaps such as this, can help break the norm for people, break the "this is the way it is" mentality.

You have the foresight, initiative, and drive to go forward with these ideas, and I praise you for that. Things people might have thought about, maybe in the back of their minds, if at all, you take a positive step forward in development. I remember when I first saw the Maximus, it was awesome. Everywhere, everyone was already talking about it being vaporware. And now, after all this time, it's come to fruition. I think that's awesome.

Some people might see this as useless. But there'll be those out there that like the idea, that see the idea could be useful for something beyond just a toy. Eventually, hopefully, things like this will catch on, break the norm, and shift our thinking about how we do things. Bravo.
