Optimus Maximus New Everyday Low Prices
We now have four differently priced configurations.

Beginner's kit with one active OLED space-bar (really useful to display the language used) is ~460 US$.

Advanced user's kit with 10 left-side OLED keys sells for 599 US$.

Pro user's keyboard with 47 active keys is just 999 US$.

And a superman's keyboard with all the 113 keys having OLEDs is 1564 US$, just as it has been.

Those who choose any of the configurations with passive keys (passive = without any display inside) will be able to upgrade at anytime to the active keys.

Single and 10-pack OLED sets will be available for pre-order soon. We'll have to spend some time with a calculator to figure out the best offerings. On average, one OLED key will sell for around 15 US$.

You're welcome to visit our store: http://store.artlebedev.com/computer_add-ons/optimus/ where all configurations are available for immediate purchase.

16 $?
Throw a calculator you use into a basket and purchase the same model as Tema uses.

Well' I was trying to guess whether you will make a board with OLED Function or OLED numeric keys.

Your idiotism turned out to be wider. Show us at least 2 ways of using Spacebar display which would be worth 460 $.

I bet you won't produce a 460 $ modification at all or, otherwise, will sell not more than 20 of them within the next 3 month.

If 15$ is an average price for a key, it means one double-sized key will cost about 20-30. This is more than a price of a cheap cell phone with a 6x-larger display and 14-16 mechanic buttons.

Why don't you just make ONE the world-best keyboard and invent a world-best-something-else instead?

I think you are being a little critical here. I have no doubt that even a single space bar that is active will be useful.

We intend to let researchers play with this keyboard to discover ways it can be used because as yet, I don't think we can imagine how it will be. You may be right, but give it a chance...

There's a lot more circuitry in the keyboard than there is in one of the keys.

And even with only one display key in it, the keyboard still has to have all of the circuitry to support a full load-out.

Keep in mind that your cell phone price is augmented by the next two years of your contract. $40 x 24 months = $960. That is just for a typical lower priced contract. The cell phone doesn't cost less than $20-$30 to manufacture.

Tema - this is a really good idea.

I've already ordered the 'Superman' version, but being able to downgrade is a worthwhile feature. If I configure the keyboard for my daughter to use ('Child Keyboard') then having the others keys blanked out would be really handy to prevent damage/wear.

Great idea having upgradable versions by the way!

As melstav says above, even if you buy the keyboard with all static keys, it has to have exactly the same inners as the full deluxe loadout. If all you -really- want is one key with a display, you probably want one of their other products instead. Or something else entirely.

I would imagine if you buy the keyboard with the single spacebar OLED, you're planning either to upgrade in segments, or to replace only a specific (and probably small) set of keys.

Not that I'm buying one of these.

Yes, price is definitely higher then I though it would be. I am very interested in the project and might've considered 100$ keyboard (with no LCD keys, but with ability to add them later).

I can imagine that keyboard is complex (it needs to feed so many mini TVs at the same time), but price is indeed an issue. I am kinda wondering how much Bloomberg keyboard cost? (I am talking about keyboard with color coded keys that is used with Bloomberg terminals for financial info).

Anyway I'll just wait and hope that price will drop somewhat.

I thought $15 a CD was a bit much when I got my first 1x CD Recorder drive, and having to use a CD Caddy as well to load it.

But then, that's what economies of scale is all about.

The price will only be dropped if people buy them. Look at the cost of LCD TVs.

http://ozdirect.com/product_info.php?products_id=11356¤cy=USD&language=en $300 dollar keyboard

And look: a $500 keyboard with no displays. http://www.barcodeplanet.com/logic-controls/lk7000.htm?f

and $200 for almost a regular keyboard

I would like to point out the phrase "Beginner's kit" is used. Wouldn't this imply that you "build" the keyboard. My guess is that 30-40 keys are packed in the box with the keyboard making the $462.27 price-tag understandable.

I can buy a Logitech G15 for 80 bucks and it has a much bigger screen. Plenty of plugins too. I guess it's not color though.

And you can't upgrade it to support many more screens. And it doesn't have mechanical keys. And that one screen doesn't perform key modifier changes. 100% different keyboard, meant for 100% different purposes.

I'll buy it when the price drops three times lower. That is:
$120 for beginner's kit,
$200 for advanced user's kit,
$333 for pro's, and
$522 for superman's kit.

Configurations

2007-11-28 09:30 pm UTC (link)
What I would have liked to see was a box with a keyboard with displays on spacebar and the "big" keys. Regular printed keys everywhere else and a handful of actve keys to put wherever I choose. One buyer could place them on the 10 left hand spaces and the keys used for national letters, another could choose to have all the function keys, while yet another could choose another setup altogether.
Guess I'll have to wait and see what Beginners kit + big key set + one or two 10 packs of keys would cost. Hopefully there will be a big keys set so you can get them without buying the superman edition.

so, if the beginner's kit is $460, and we assume each OLED key will cost $15... we have this:

Begginer's kit: $460 :|
Advanced user's kit: $599 ($460 + $150 = $610) save 2% :)
Pro user's keyboard: $999 ($460 + $690 = $1150) save 13% :)
Superman's keyboard: $1564 ($460 + $1,680 = $2,140) save 27% :)

cool!

WHY NOT MAKE A FRICKING BLACK AND WHITE KEY OPTION???
(Anonymous)
2007-11-30 06:03 pm UTC (link)
I look at this keyboard, I want it. The thing is, why even bother with color screens on the letter & number keys (basically 75% of the keyboard), espsecially when Photoshop and most any other graphic shortcut icon is or can be Black and White??? This could possibly lower the cost of the key by half!?! No? Yes? I don't need a gay pride keyboard w/ a frickin rainbow on it, just a keyboard like you have designed with a more configurations.

YO ART, YOU BROUGHT BACK THE 113 FROM THE 103, NOW BRING US A FEW MORE OPTIONS AND LOWER THE COST SOMETIME IN 2008!!!

MAKE SOME CHEAPER/ B&W OLEDS AS AN OPTION !!!

Important Notice About the Optimus Price
(Anonymous)
2007-12-01 05:45 am UTC (link)
Hi, My name is Joseph Machalani from EpsiQonTEch --- Your Life, Reviewed. Just a little notice about the Optimus Price. Some people will say i'll buy the "Superman" Versionwhen it will be around 500$. Even for 800$ dream about it because... it wont really happend... Why?? Because lets do some maths

Cost of the OLED's Screen 113x11=1243
Price of the Optimus = 1564

Actually, the OLED is aroun 15 but i made them to 11 for industrial sales and not consumer. The OLEDs are 80% of the retail price. But if we add the materials to make it, the plasic, the moulds, to internal board, soldering, enginering, reasearchs, employees, box...You saw my point.

So will the Optimus price will go down ?? Maybe but even now the price is really, REALLY low.You cant ask less because this is the price of 113 OLEDs so stop whining and buy it for 1564$, Yes it costs a lot.. But the quality it gives you is great, greater than a Logitech G5 Keyboard. I am currently reviewing the Optimus Mini Three and you don't know how much fun i have to make my icons and show it to my friends and myself... and thats 3 screens... Imagine a WHOLE keyboard of 113... If you pass a lot of time on your computer, Gaming, Photoshop, 3D Render, Sound Engeniring, Video Production, even program it for your HTML Codes... You should buy it
