Optimus Maximus @ Wired Store
Last year Wired Magazine listed Optimus keyboard as number 10 on their "Vaporware '06" list.

This year Optimus Keyboard is on the display at the Wired Store in New York (see location: http://www.wired.com/promo/wiredstore/location.html)

If any of our readers will happen to pass by the store and check out the Optimus: please drop me a note with your first impression :-)

My thanks for showing us not only the keyboard, but the steps and insights it takes to bring something from the design stage to the production model. It has raised my awareness of the difficulties involved.

Oh my God. You actually did it. I still think this keyboard is too cool to exist.
I believe the Upravlator's final shipping date will be way beyond "sometime 2008" though, considering how much time it took to perfect the Maximus.

The Flickr photo has this labeled as an LCD keyboard.

Far from it, the mighty Optimus Maximus!!!

LMAO, all of those idiots (WIRED, Engadget, and all those others) that were screaming "VAPORWARE" a few months back sure got owned.

In any case, congratulations are in order! Looks like you've succeeded in realizing your vision -- the keyboard looks fantastic!

Thanks for your time and effort Tema !
I'm glad you finally finished it.
Maybe you tell us what your next project will be all about !?
A mac-like pro Mouse would be great or maybe a Russian Operating System ^^

OMG OMG OMG!!!

http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-optimus-maximus-at-last/

For all the doubters out there, you were probably odds on for this to be a failure, I'll admit it. But every last one of you should now have the common courtesy to acknowledge that despite your (at times downright arrogant) dismissals, they've done it - THEY HAVE ACTUALLY DONE IT.

I'm proud to have put green down for this. Hopefully they'll make squillions in patent licensing alone, for this is one of the few times that the inventor of an entire concept should be justly rewarded.

The most common input device in the world just became an output device - and we can't even imagine the ways in which this will be used.

Well done guys, well done indeed.

Bishop2K.

When will there be a demo in London? London is a big important city full of rich people. Good place to have a demo. Especially for poor, unimportant Londoners to come have a look at the Optimus! :P

Hey Tema!

I would like to join in the congratulations here.

I know I'm a bit late, but I still have a comment that I must add.

I do not think that the current placement of the wires is optimal. We need the USB connection to the PC and we also need the power. But why are they on the oposite side of the keyboard? with all the thought you invested in the design, I think that you could'we done this better. But I still want one!!! :-)

Heh. Not really...
That is the power cable and the kensington lock cable.
The USB that connects to the PC is on the other side :-)
Take a better look on the other pictures.

Fool, look again. The USB ports on the right are part of a hub for your mouse and other devices. The input is the one on the left. Just look at the shape. The layout is very well thought out.

I am so glad they kept the black around, it is very sexy.

I saw the Optimus Maximus!

I just happened to check my Google Reader last night, and I saw this blog post.
Just as it happens, I was going into the city today! After I finally found the store, I got to see the keyboard.
It looked amazing; these pictures don't do it justice. The screens are a lot brighter and clearer than they look in the pics.
It felt a bit weird at first that only the cap and not the screen moved, but after I pressed it a few times it felt more normal.
I was disappointed that it was just running through a demo set of layouts, and I couldn't actually try the keyboard out and see it changing when changing apps. Nonetheless, it was cool to be able to see it with my own eyes.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It wasn't the bump I was talking about (though thinking back I didn't notice it), the actual OLED screen on the key itself had a streak in it. The OLED screen was faulty.

Display Keyboard vs. Optimus Keyboard
[info]elmaverick
2008-01-10 08:21 am UTC (link)
I must let you know that there's already a U.S. patent for the Display Keyboard held by someone named Elkin Acevedo. The invention is much older than Levedev's patent and Elkin's keyboard is exactly the same as the Optimus Keyboard. As far as I know it's being developed here in the United States since he already has a contract with a big computer company.

KB is trash, by Slrman

While there is plenty of eye-candy there, it's still trash as far as the hardware components are concerned. Anyone that can touch-type will not even notice the eye candy after a few days.

What everyone will notice is that the quality of construction and the parts used is the usual sub-standard trash we are accustomed to seeing. Why doesn't anyone else make a nice, solid, simple keyboard like the one with the Apple iMac? One solid piece of 1/4" aluminum with keys slightly protruding, 15 Function keys with lots of alternate uses and all programmable to anything you want. No wonder Macs cost more. The attention to detail in every part of their design and construction makes them worth it.
