Now that is cool. The screens look nice and bright and the key surfaces look good too.

Better than before.. Still waiting to see some real numbers on these displays.

Also, all these keys are the same "Square" form factor, while I'm pretty sure some of these should be the double-long (Ins, Enter, +). Are those keys not available yet, or is this the real design?

I remember a while back they posted in this journal that all the screens would be the same size because it would make it cheaper and easier to manufacture. Have a browse through their archive if you want to know more.

It's a render

Hrm, Nope i have to say i don't think it is a render, and I work in a 3d design firm (as a programmer admittedly).

Reason that caught my eye most was the light interacting off the surface of the PCB, you can see both the dip for the tracks and the inconsistencies of he insulating layer over the top. coupled with the irregular light reflections off the keys and accurate skin tone I have to say while it's POSSIBLE this is a render the likelihood is close to zero.

Keep the pictures coming, It's great to have some visible feedback on how the projects rolling along!

real pirates don't cut their nails, they use them to distract ninjas in direct confrontation!

As for the keyboard picture, it looks like the very best of PC peripheral porn ever produced! The transparent plastic caps with shiny colors below it redefine 'sexy' to previously unknown levels of sexiness. By the time I will be able to buy it, I'll let the letters change colors in slow waves! That'd be badass.

OLED Tech

Wow! I've been looking for something like this for a while! Where on earth did you find those small little square OLED components? Are they custom made for you? Maybe you could help point me in the direction of a manufacturer or even a part number! I think you have a great look with this keyboard! Keep up the good work.

All their OLED's were custom-made, they had to delay the prototype about 6 months because the original factory could not source the components. I highly doubt you will be able to obtain the OLED screens since I'm sure Art had an exclusivity agreement with the manufacturer since their studio fronted all the R&D costs. If you read this journal back far enough you will find out all the OLED hassles they went through

I wonder though if OLED companies make something similar... all I can find are rectangular chips with the controllers below the chip... Is this not a standard way to do something, having a square chip with the controller (I assume) underneath?

Of course it's not a standard way to do things - maybe because this is the first product of it's kind? Have you read through the journal like russianwinga suggested, or are you still talking about something you don't understand.

If another company made something similar, Art wouldn't have had to put an ounce into the R&D and custom tooling for these parts. This is a first-ever product, and you will not see anything like this. You probably won't see a copycat for a while, either.

And if you've been looking for this for a while, then this keyboard will be released later this year (hopefully). ~$1500 and it's yours.

Sorry I think maybe you misunderstood me. I did read through the blog, and I'm not talking about the keyboard. I'm just talking about a single OLED screen that fits under one of the keys. I was just curious as to how common a square OLED panel is, as I have only every seen rectangular ones, usually resolutions such as 128x64, 128x96, never square ones such as are used in this product. I was just wondering if that was an uncommon size is all.

Hard to read?
(Anonymous)
2007-08-10 09:55 pm UTC (link)
I find the keys hard to read, due to the transparent plastics which acts like a lens and the highly reflective surface.
Seems like the option with the fixed display and movable keycaps has been the wrong choice. (I agree that a movable display is a nightmare to engineer.)

Look at the iPhone and you will see how the reflection will really play off the keys. Looking down at your keyboard, I am sure the reflections will not be apparent. It is just the angle this photo is taken at that makes it look bad. If you look at the iPhone sideways with its glossy screen all you can see is smudges and fingerprints. Looking down at the screen from a regular angle, the LCD overpowers any reflections.

Seriously, I hope those will be made available for OEMs. That size display is unique without any competition.

Individual OLED screens
[info]doub.myopenid.com
2007-08-11 03:11 am UTC (link)
On the left of the picture we can see the connector of the OLED screens, and it seems pretty simple. Do you plan to release the pinning and protocol used, and sell screens separately for hobbyists ? They would be wonderful for little autonomous robots.

That's a way to buy bigger quantities from your manufacturer to lower prices, and sold individually you can probably have a big profit margin.

I totally second this. Sell the keyboard with non OLED blanks. Then a person can buy OLED screens from you and replace it as your budget allows. I would totally buy it filled with blanks for $100 USD, then each key at $15 a pop in bulk, mabey 30-50ish in singles. you still get the same total cost 100+15*(114 ish) = $1,810 and if you are not buying in bulk it could be up to $5,800 theres some major profit opportunities there.

If you've been keeping up, you would know that this is the plan. Once production is finished and the product is released there is going to be a model with just a few OLEDs and you can add them as budget/need allows.

Thank you for the update, and yes I have not been keeping up, I was just a hit and run and did not have time to do the entire blog, but I wholeheartedly agree on this business model, as long as this barebones version is not the 1 grand price tag we see on the front.

What's funny that the real picture looks so different from the rendered one... especially reflections. The office light was never considered seriously. One more step in the design scheme: to integrate the light switch together with a power button.
