Optimus Maximus Tooling Process
First parts to be tooled are the keycaps, because they are 100% final. Initially we thought of making about 10 types (one for every Shift, Tab and Enter key variations). This would make the process of managing the replacement key shipping more tricky. Now we have only five types of keys - single, single with a bump for finger positioning, medium, double and a space bar.

This is great. It really help apreciate the beaty of it all, that we can see the buttons alreade. I especially like the you've made keys with a bump for finger positioning. Just like with the K-lock, you didn't necesarily need to add these minor features, but they really make the keyboard appear more professional, thought through and well designed. Thank you for the great work.

Awesome. :)  And seriously, these renders continue to deceive me.  That... that just looks so much like a photograph. xD

So the keycaps are going to be clear, rather than transmissive black? The single digits look fine, but in the other ones it looks like too much of the inner workings can be seen. Oh well.

Maybe they forgot that detail about the caps when they rendered this picture. There's no way they have a pure white area to take a real picture like that.

I know the picture is a render, but if it is a accurate representation then we'll be able to see the innards refracting like crazy through the cap.. not very attractive, in my opinion. Even if it was black around the edges and clear only at the top to reveal the screen, I think that would be better. I also hope they are using the high quality glossy plastic that is popular in electronics these days, anything less would be disappointing. It's very easy to set up a pure white background for taking product photos, by the way.

You absolutely can take pictures like that, and its actually pretty common. That's why these look so real. Its all about the right exposure in the camera, as well as adjusting the levels in Photoshop afterwards. I'm currently developing a shopping website, and have taken real pictures of the products on a white background, and then adjusted in photoshop to get a pure white background. Here's two examples (the shadows are real):
www.hulaluludesigns.com/img/n001_turq.jpg (http://www.hulaluludesigns.com/img/n001_turq.jpg)
www.hulaluludesigns.com/img/a000_hulabag.jpg (http://www.hulaluludesigns.com/img/a000_hulabag.jpg)

Of course, when this keyboard hits larger production, its going to make my photoshop editing even easier! ;)

I am Wowed already! Wooooowwwwwww! This is awesome! I can't wait to receive mine!

I am glad that this is being created with beauty in mind. The vast majority of products don't think of beauty. As long as they function then it'll do for most companies. Unfortunately, that's a bad attitude to take. I'm glad the Optimus Project has beauty in mind as well as functionality. I know when I get mine all my mates will want to have one ;-)

Too bad I can't afford it unless it goes mainstream, if any.

Space bar without a display?

The lonely square display in the middle of the space bar just looks really strange somehow; have you considered throwing in an optional space bar without a display?

It's not like a regular spacebar has 'Space' written on it anyway...

In the standard layout you can put a black image in the space bar if you don't like the word "Space", but if you have a program function is necessary to have the image for that function :)

I.E. It could say "JUMP" when you're playing certain games. It should also be able to be programmed to stay blank until "YOU'VE GOT MAIL".

It would be cool if that display was the full with of the key, so you can place a line of text on it.
That would make for a realy nice news-ticker.

Maybe later they'll make that an expensive upgrade. As it stands now, every display is the same part, keeping their prices as low as possible. If larger sized keys had larger displays, not only would they cost more, but the price of the standard small displays would also increase (though maybe only slightly) due to their smaller production runs.

I recall everyone having the option to have either keys with a display, or keys without a display, where the latter ones can be "upgraded" later.

Pretty sure that's still going to happen with keyboards ordered after the first batch.

Hey. Great work on the optimus keyboard. In college for engineering and really respect your work. Actually working on keyboard myself. Thought to use electro-magnets to magnetize each key so compression can be achieved. Only thing though is size, power (USB can only use 3 volts), and having electromagnets in a keyboard (thought it wouldnt be fair for people who have pace-makers cause they could die using it). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

to be totally honest, the SPACE bar is an issue. there should at least be 2 of the mini OLEDS in that ginormous key, it looks silly. also, i cant help but drool over the OLD design. the keys were just too sexy w/ the box like form. these keys look like MELTING ICE and i am not talking about the OLED size as everyone knows that was the hardest part of this project.
also, if you look at the old desings F key arrangment, it is much more organized.

Size Keys

I for one will not buy it unless each of the four diffrent sized keys has a diffrent length OLED. I mean, I understand the tooling and everything cost a lot, but having a space bar with only a little "Space" in the middle detracts from the overall coolness of the keyboard.
