Keyboard Prices
I did a quick list of keyboard prices ($100 and higher).

http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/price-compare/

It would be much more interesting to create a table of all the models and variations out there. We're on the top part with the price, but there's nothing that compares functionally. There are diamond-plated and hand-painted keyboards that I did not include in the list. Surprisingly, software keyboards costs start at $200.

Use Google to find out details about any particular model.

Did you also find how many pieces they sell at those prices?

Comparing yourselves to keyboards is a pointless exercise. Compare yourself to high end control surfaces, because that is what you are biulding. In that market you are in the middle end price range.

You are comparing your keyboard to accessibility products?!? Those keyboards are designed for people with very specialized needs and the run-rate I would guess is under 10,000 units sold per SKU a year. What a disappointing way to justify pricing…

This keyboard isn't being designed for the average user. It's is a specialized keyboard for specialized needs. The comparison fits it fine. Everyone needs to just get over the fact that, at the moment, average users aren't going to be getting one of these.

Accessibility keyboards are targeted at individuals who have no other way to interact with a computer. The software keyboards that are listed where developed for versions of Windows that had no clear APIs to mimic keyboard input.

Their price is limited fixed to production runs (for hardware) and small user base for the software keyboards. In most cases within North America, where these devices have the highest penetration, the funding for a purchase tends to come more from insurance companies than end users, and the impact of the price is not passed directly back to the user.

This keyboard appears to be all about the cool factor. Comparing the pricing of the two markets to justify the price is somewhat misleading.

Average users have been dreaming of getting one of these for over a year now. It's not easy to just get over.

Yeah after being told since day one I believe that the unit would cost the price of a decent cellphone.

1500 for a keyboard.......................I've held out for years for this keyboard and its the price of a fairly high end desktop computer. The Iphone is the price of a PS3, it's really not justifiable to charge that much for this keyboard even if it uses OLED technology.

I'm happy that apple developping touch screen. So for the same price as the maximus, i'll get a 20" touchscreen with all options and more. This keyboard is only made for wannabe cool. It's just abusive..

apparently you are missing the king of keyboards
the Topre series
they are the ones who makes the keyboards for the Happy Hacking Keyboard
the technology they use is simply 10 times better then Logitech or Microsoft keyboard technology
to be honost, I think they are even better then Cherry keyboards.

what are you basing the price on?

in previous posts you said the price would be around the price of a nice cell phone. most nice cell phones are $300 to $500 USD.

i am a software developer who sells software. if i base the price on what i think my software is worth i would sell it for $2000 because that is the amount of effort i put into it. but the market cannot bear that. i would sell maybe 5 to 10 for those that cannot run their business without it. but if i look at my target audience i will know my revenue.

if it is about making money do the math:
$1500 * numOfHighIncome = what?
$300 * numOfAveUsers = amount

i used to work at best buy in the USA (makes at least $10billion a year in revenue). if a product like this was moved into the mass market (instead of the high income market you would reach over 500 million customers).

i do not know the number of high income customers you will have. i do know the number of average income customers you will have at $300 (which is the most you could ask a average user for this product in the USA, still very high for the rest of the world). i think those average income customers would be 50k at least in the first year and adoption would be higher after that at the average consumer price (if marketed in the technology channels in the US).

you're an idiot. Hardware and Software are too very different things and the development costs and sale prices cannot be compared.

no wonder why you work at best buy

I still don't understand how the keyboard has become so much money. The first thing I remember about the original keyboard, is that it was said that it would cost as much as a good mobile phone... A good phone is $300. The keyboard is 5 times that price. Good luck with finding a wharehouse to store all of the unsold items.

I would have spent up to US$500 on this.
$1500 is not a realistic price. I hope you guys didn't have too many built.

Also, I think a lot of people are going to be pretty upset when they spend $1500 on a keyboard when they don't know the life expectancy of it. For that amount, I would hope that you are going to offer at least a 5-year warranty. Even then, that's $300 a year just for a keyboard.

I have to agree. When I first saw this product I was so excited, put myself on the mailing list and everything. I was prepared to spend up to $500 US, not three times that much. Oh well.
