Optimus Maximus Interface Ideas
Roma Voroneshsky, one of our studio's art-director (see him here: http://www.artlebedev.com/studio/) describes his ideas for Optimus Maximus.

While in a special mode (using a modifier or just in when not typing text), press P:

Icons for the application and functions starting with P appear:

Photoshop, Powerpoint, Pages, Preferences, Print. Choose it with a second finger:

More to come.

BTW, this is a very interesting new trend in soft/game development. Just imagine how many popular old games may be written for Optimus

Usually, people press the 'P' button by right hand rather than left hand. But it doesn't matter, on the whole, the idea is great.

Works both right and left handed.

Left hand while using mouse. Right hand while typing.

Idea

It might be an idea to do something like control-shift-p rather than just P, for the initiator. this would prevent anyone accidently pressing the combination while typing in word or something? but yeah, i agree with the idea :) Mat.

I imagine this would be something that you could configure. This thing seems to be highly configurable, as all things should be.

Useful enough!

If i just try this movement out, I think I would use the middle finger to press the switch and the index finger to press the now existing special buttons within reach. Or the other way around. In both cases there seem to be about 4-6 buttons that are in easy reach. This will save a lot of hand movements, but I also wonder how to switch to this special mode in an easy way, without letting it interfere with your normal typing. Then again, I also use vim which makes life hard in pretty much the same way :)

Brilliant! At last, I'll be able to work out what the "magic keystroke" commands are!

I really want one of these keyboards!

And I'm sure there will be people writing things like Snake to be played actually *on* this keyboard. :-)

It is hard to wait.
And I guess that I am not alone.

Programming the Keyboard
(Anonymous)
2007-03-16 03:46 pm UTC (link)
Something like this would be very helpful for a quick programming mode for keyboard. I hope I can explain what I mean clearly.
Say if I was in configurator and wanted to program keys for a specific program, it would light all the keys that are already mapped to functions with the remainder being a default letter or just blank, then I can press the key I want to assign a task to, then go in the program and click on their menu option or button that I want linked to the key, then all the keys (1-0, q-p, a-;, and z-?) would light up with icons and I could use the arrows to scroll through the icons until I see what I like which I simply press and mapping is done and the keyboard resumes to display assigned keys for me to repeat the process for a new function.

Special mode

2007-03-16 04:01 pm UTC (link)
There's ten extra keys on the left... just use one of those to enter this mode. Press magic button, press letter, select program. No need to even hold anything down - you could cancel by hitting the magic button again. (Like Caps Lock).

I have a feeling the list of things you can do with OpMax that are both cool and useful will get rather long...

I would like the operator key that makes this function to be on the keyboard, like one of the useless F keys or whatever, or in one of the keys on the side...something like a capslock key.

I would simply hook up Griffin Powermate to one of the USB ports on Maximus, and use that to "rotate" back and forth between layouts.

It would be nice to have the standard control keys work in this fashion too. So you press [CONTROL] or the Apple [COMMAND] key and all the keys change.

[P] becomes a printer Icon
[X] becomes a pair of scissors
[V] becomes a bottle of glue
[C] becomes a rubber stamp
[S] becomes a floppy disk
[F] becomes a magnifying glass
[W] becomes an animated house window pane closing

etc.

The keys can do animations right?

According to what I've read, they can play 3 FPS animations. Which rocks.

When Wingdings is selected, or a certain font style, it will make a huge difference, for previewing and art houses will flip for these.

Wish I had thought of it.

Seems like it'll take 2 hours to set up and it'll save you about 20 minutes of time in total.

I guess that's part of the fun, though.

Once again, while you're in the early stages of this project, please don't forget us who have large hands and fingers. I'm using a split/ergonomic/two-handed keyboard, and it's very difficult for me (as I'm sure it is for a lot of people) to handle a standard-shape keyboard. I don't know what would be involved in splitting the circuit board in order to split the keyboard, so I just ask that you keep the ergonomic aspect in mind. Perhaps a split-shape Optimus won't be around for quite a while, but I won't lose hope just yet :D

This is similar to what you have in KDE. It would be very cool to see Optimus working with it in the upcoming version 4.0. I think Krunner is responsible for similar functionality to this idea but on the screen! http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2007/02/krunner-update.html (http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2007/02/krunner-update.html)

idea vs. pics

The idea is simply great,-that will help to clean away all the less used icons from the desctop as well.

My notice to the pictures:
Tema, You have missed a chance to show the whole world a middle finger (that would be really used, since "P" is generally pressed by a right hand, as it have been writen above).
Thenagain, about nails: http://www.artlebedev.ru/kovodstvo/business-lynch/2007/01/15/ or was it on purpose? Looks much like the same hand...
Excuse me for critics and thank You for useful "business-lynch" thred.

Best regards
