Optimus Key Modules
We've optimized key sizes to have as few press molds as possible and to make it easy to handle the stock. Since all the keys are changeable and can be outfitted with displays, it's not a good idea to have 'right control key' and 'left control key' to be different parts (and part numbers).

Space bar is one of its kind. Then come three others: regular key, middle-size key, and double-size key. That's it.

Here's the preview of what we'll show at CeBIT this month (to be released in the end of 2007):

Return and Shift are double-sized, Alt and Ctrl are medium sized.

What are the chances of you ever releasing an ergonomic (ala MS Natural Pro style - NOT the older one with the Home/End key cluster arranged the wrong direction ) version of this keyboard technology?

Is there going to be a UK layout, with a proper enter key?

"proper" is interpreted. everyone who can type has all the skills they need to learn a keyboard layout that differs from their favourite. you had to learn the whole typing thing from scratch at some point anyway, so using a key layout that differs very slightly from what you learned on or are used to should not be a challenge.

the shape of the enter key is meaningless; stop giving it meaning.

Does this mean that keys will be able to be moved around, to some extent, and have double-sized keys span where two keys would normally (traditionally) be?

i like the idea of changeable keys.
everyone can decide how many display keys they want and they can afford. and you have always an idea for the next xmas or birthday ;-)

3 different sizes is enough.

btw, why the hell do you label the space bar? isn't it obvious?

The giant, square enter key convinced me to not buy this keyboard. But now that the design has been changed so the keyboard has a regular enter key, I want it again! The space bar is huge, but now that I look at my finger placement, the larger space bar looks like it would actually be better and more comfortable. Nice work, I love it!

Great idea about key removing, the only bad thing that I see is that there should be more sizes, we will need a bigger size for Shift keys as well for "BACKSLASH"

Another good idea will be to sell different bases so some users will find US better, other users will find UK/SPANISH

My regular old Dell keyboard is a 104-key model. This Optimus keyboard is a 103-key model. Guess we know what key didn't survive the transition. :)

Seriously though, if you want a context menu, SHIFT+F10 should provide the same functionality as it has for years in Windows.

yepp, WITHOUT those Win%*@~ keys^^

This layout whould fit for germany, too, as on the image at the top there are only two keys between "L" and Enter it whould be dificult to put "Ö","Ä" and "'/#" between it. Hope there will be another "ground-plate" with space for those 3 keys!

One display per key?
(Anonymous)

There's one big problem as far as I can see. The keys only have one display, so there's no -key result displayed. Sure, I know that -; is :, but non-typists might have issues, as may anyone moving from one regional layout to another.

Nice job Art & Crew, your product seems to be coming along very nicely. I'm really looking forward to seeing it on my desk soon.

As for the people who're bitching, don't pay attention to them -- they're a small "unhappy-with-everything" minority.

Have a good time at CeBIT, cheers!

Well first of all of course we are looking forward to see it at the cebit. I believe now when you settled down all details know the eys sizes and amount I believe you have an idea about the aprox price for the full blooded keyboard where every possible key is a display. And I believe that by this moment the product wasn’t targeted for the luxurious marked, or you would made it out of wood with some metal incrustation, for know it seems to be a product for people obsessed with technology not so much for those who use a usb flash drives by Dupont. So what is the price.

And one very important question, may be Ms. stranna can help me: I do type in Japanese and I see Optimus 103 as a great tool to type on such languages, will it easily switch to Japanese letters when I just switch the languages in the language bar?

Hi, ArtLeb-team. I just wanna say that this layout looks really good, and I understand how it's not economically sane too create a gazillion different key-sizes. I like this layout very much, even though I presently use an EU-layout. Don't listen to their complaints. You've done very well.

Key wear
(Anonymous)
2007-03-05 09:26 pm UTC (link)
That layout is nearly identical to the keyboard I am using now. I would honestly prefer the edges to be aligned on the sides just for nice clean look, but for all practical purposes, I think you are developing this project beautifully.

One word of caution: The keys on many keyboards have a slight texture to them, and show wear spots as smooth on the most common keys like the space bar. With displays this variation in appearance would look terrible, so please make the keys perfectly smooth from the start so that a little polishing from your fingers won't be noticable.

Re: Key wear
(Anonymous)
2007-03-06 12:20 pm UTC (link)
i guess the key would have to be all smooth anyway because otherwise you cant see anything on the screen.... also maybe the transparent caps on the keys can be replaced if you mess them up? or you could just buy a couple of new keys :P i think now that you can actually buy a cheap version and then upgrade I may be able to actually buy this keyboard :D but i will probably still have to wait until its been out for a while because it will still be a few hundred dollars i guess, without any screen keys? also, will it be possible to buy non-screen keys as well?
