Optimus 103 OLED News
I'd like to inform our readers that production of our custom OLEDs for the Optimus 103 has started and we expect to have them in April 2007.

There's no way back, 'big' Optimus will be released this year :-)

Yup, excellent news. I'm finally moving over to my MacBook permanently and need a great keyboard. Optimus came up and I hadn't checked the website since the vaporware awards.

It's very satisfying knowing something this cool will make it to the market in a few months :D

"production of our custom OLEDs for the Optimus 103 has started and we expect to have them in April 2007."

Careful. That means they are getting the keys in april, not that the keyboard will be released in april.

Previous entries have said it costs them $10 per key x 103 keys = $1,000 just for the keys. So don't be surprised the final version costs $1,500-$1,700.

Fortunetly, OLED is becoming cheap very fast and I wouldn't be surprised to see this baby for $500 in 3 yrs.

You expect them to take a picture of something that hasn't even been made yet?

Did you not read the post that said they have to get the OLED making factory to create a new template or something (tooling i think they called it) as the OLED screens are a custom size.

They don't have any real ones yet, thus they can't show you pictures of them

Perhaps you would like them to take a pic of the factory they are being made in lol? :P

Yes, actually that would be great. It would certainly demystify where they're at in the process. If production has started, the tooling is complete. If the tooling is complete, they probably have a prototype sample. If they do, I'd like to see it.

Which key type ???

@ tema
Can you tell us which key type was chosen finally?
Regarding to your "switchchart" posted on 26.12.06 (http://www.artlebedev.ru/blog/switchchart.gif).

@ Some anonymous people which are writing comments here ...
Nothing against constructive criticism but people which are perpetual nagging shoud go away from here, buy a 0815 keyboard for 10$ and be happy with it.

I know what I am talking about ... I am an industrial hardware developper and I know what that means, how much time and energy it takes to find a solution which is suitable to all requirements - and that requirements can change on the way to the target.
So I have great respect, what the Art. Lebedev Studio did during the last year around the optimus keyboard family. I am happy now to know that I can get an "big optimus" in the near future :-)

Greetings Gurit

I've seen this keyboard project here and there but it was only recently posted on a future tech community here on livejournal. It was then immediately pointed out that you have a livejournal community dedicated to the very project itself!

I see this as an opportunity to voice my own concerns and i've tried to choose a recent and relavant post with which to do this... i hope this is it. I also hope my lateness in feeling like i could contribute is not entirely too late or falls on deaf ears... or infact has been voiced before anyway.

Now, i may be a bit out of date with regards to the keyboard layout but i'll just say what worries me and leave it at that. Basically i feel that the backspace / return / right shift and right control buttons are all too far away from the arrow / 'home' spread of buttons. This would seriously disadvantage gamers who prefer to use the arrow setup in gaming as those keys to the left of the arrows will be a strain to reach. The keyboard i'm using at the moment has the right ctrl button around 6mm away from the left arrow button. The Optimus keyboard however seems like it has a veritable chasm between these two buttons.

Any chance of this bias for the WASD setup being resolved?

Many thanks,
Peace

N-Key Rollover
[info]awii_chan
2007-02-12 06:18 am UTC (link)
Will the Optimus have n-key rollover? That is, the ability to hold any number of keys simultaneously and for them all to be registered. That is one of my dream keyboard features in a modern keyboard. I love the idea of the individual key screens, and as a Dvorak typist, would greatly benefit from such a keyboard. However, if the keyboard doesn't have n-key rollover (which would be very convenient for many of the tasks I perform), I'm not sure I'd be willing to shell out 200+ dollars for it.

If they haven't already considered this, could the designer(s) please research n-key rollover and consider it being added as another awesome feature of this keyboard?

ok...

but why did you remain stucked with the idea of "buttons"?
there are many other options... touch screens, etc...

thank you
Simone.

Well for starters, touch screens don't support multiple touches at once. The only one that does is Apple's upcoming iPhone and they have a patent on the concept.

Although I will admit one big screen is much cheaper than 103 seperate little screens, would probably shave $1,000 off the total price. But people prefer the feedback keys give. If you ever used a touch screen setup, you'll find it's not good to use as it looks.

So is 'big' with the shortcut buttons on the left side of Optimus? :)

It's the 'big' 103-key board as opposed to being 'small' like the 3-key one.

Why not have a wide space key built up by multiple keys so that it can form letter "space" or "jump" or other stuff? No need to make custom sized keys...

Get it finished and on the market, it will sell world-wide for sure, and bring credibility to your company. I'm holding off on other gaming keyboards for this, please don't dissapoint me!

Questions:
Wired/wireless?
if wireless, delay time?
Will it have a larger screen for more general information?
Will you release a model without the num pad and/or other unused keys?
Will it be available world-wide?
