Latest Optimus mini three Configurator 0.37 alpha for Mac OS X is available.

* * *

Optimus-103 keyboard was rated number 10 in this year's annual presentation of the Wired News Vaporware Awards. This is cool. We're among Airbus A380 and Duke Nukem Forever. Next year we're going to leave this list.

We have asked 20 OLED makers to give us the price for the displays of the size we need. Only five of them answered - probably because our specs require tooling and most factories are afraid of anything new. We've chosen one manufacturer who will start producing OLEDs in January 2007. Production cycle takes 8-10 weeks. Our specs: 32x32 pixels, 9x9 mm active area, 65K colors.

As soon as we'll know all the production costs, we'll start accepting pre-orders for Optimus-103. Most likely it will be February 2007.

Happy New Year everyone!

Will the "Enter" key, the "Space" bar and other oversize keys feature a bigger screen?

Probably not, as that would require a whole new set of tooling for those keys.

Hooray for informed transparency in design!

This is actually really good news, and what I've been hoping to hear before the 1st came around. Good luck on getting the awesome pricing everyone here in the comments is hoping for...

I have a question.

The number of comments decreased recently so now it is a better chance for each comment to be read by you. My question is about Art Design studio in prospect. It feels like if you were changing the course from web development to product design. I see much more new products in your portfolio and not so many web sites as before. May be you make some press release or something official about “What Art studio will be in 2007 and what will it bring to us”.

The internet is not King, though we all like to think it is.

To me I think that Art. Lebedev's Studio doesn't put everything they do up on the website. Also from looking at the news feed, there are a number of Site design Items listed.

If the studio is going a certain way I think it would be more beneficial for them to just do it instead of making an announcement setting it in stone. By just doing what they want they won't be forced to conform to any certain type of form. And from their designs it would seem as if they don't like to conform ;-)

It's good to see that you are determined to not be stuck in the vaporware category forever. I can't wait to this thing get pulled off, in a very sexy awesome fashion.

Make it happen!

Hopefully if the first version sells well enough, they'll be able to pull off the tooling for other, odd-size/shape keys.

And they've already said no wireless... you'd probably have to charge the battery close to daily, at best. And most people won't deal with that, for a keyboard.

If someone offers you to arrange being among Hemingway, Thompson and Cobain, don't go for it, however cool this may seem!

Over-Hyped Keyboard
(Anonymous)

You also made Extreme Tech's (part of PCMag) MOSt Over_HYped Keyboard award.

"Most Over-hyped Keyboard:
The Optimus Keyboard
Optimus Keyboard
The keyboard with LCD key labels is more concept than anything of tangible quality. It raised a few eyebrows when first announced, then gradually began losing public interest after numerous delays and design changes. Please. We're tired. And for the price, we probably won't see this keyboard in ExtremeTech labs: The only released one, with but three keys, goes for a whopping 4498 rubles! (That's more than 50 dollars per key!)"

Physical Form
(Anonymous)
2006-12-28 07:15 pm UTC (link)
I have a question.

Will the keyboard be available in an ergonomic form, such as even the simple Microsoft Natural keyboard?

For those with repetitive stress syndroms, etc., this would make the difference between a reason to purchase, and a reason to pass.

It would even be worthwhile to learn that, while implimenting this suggestion would not delay the roll-out of the basic keyboard, this is coming down the pipeline.

Will this mean a significant price drop?

We'll see if you can visually see the difference at a size of 9mm square. 32 is plenty detailed. I think the 96 pixel count you are quoting is for the OM3 or the Upravlator.

96 pixels at 9mm is nearly 300dpi - laser printer quality. Most LCD displays are only 72dpi.

Great! with one question
(Anonymous)
2006-12-29 07:15 am UTC (link)
when computer is powered off, can "additional keys" on left be set as some native ACPI function key? e.g. "Power-On" key, which I used to turn on my PC everyday. This is probably the only key not driven by software and not part of 103 keyboard standard....

but... whatever, I will order one even without it ....

Braille displays

By the way, you can develop one more modification of optimus keyboard: by changing OLED displays by braille-enabled displays that could show something "relief". I think it could be great and maybe help someone.
