I'm incredibly happy with all the sarcasm and critique my previous post is getting. Nothing inspires me more than tons of negative opinions.

I like people to know how something is being developed and how things are changing on the fly.

By the way, on December 12 we are going to accept only 103 pre-orders (one hundred and three pre-orders) at a price of US$1200 with a shipping date about May 2007. Later on we'll start accepting more pre-orders at sub-1000 price with a shipping date around September 2007.

That's good to hear, given this gem:

I'd bet you are about to find the motherload of inspiration.

Whether I like or dislike the changes, I enjoy seeing the process as it goes along. Yeah, this definately means you're gonna get people that will bitch and complain throughout the entire process. Mostly they might do that whether they see the process or not, but it's typically kept pretty quiet(mostly cuz they don't have a forum to post in).
I do like that you are taking these in stride, and aren't getting fed up with it and deciding to not post anymore. Because though I might not comment some on it, I do enjoy seeing the posts about what's new with the development. Keep up the good work, and hopefully sometime in the future, I'll actually be able to afford one :)

$1200US
I am in total shock. Maybe you can get some of the early adopters to cash in on this and the cash flow will make things a little easier on you guys. This is a great idea and some sacrifices will have to be made to get the first versions out. Maybe then we can see the keyboard we all want.

As for the downers. Give it time. They'll get it finished and the wait won't kill you.

I was getting pretty in to this keyboard as were my other friends who were finding the way keys were mapped in games to be a little frustrating. If you're serious about a cost of ~$1200USD though, it will be hard to reach a market that can by a middle/lower high end gaming box for that cost after tax here in Canada.

I think the project is great, I think the keys being black and white isn't a terrible setback. I do think that the screens being sized down is a serious setback and I think that the cost is a barrier to you really entering the market. Designers, gamers, or professionals, it doesn't matter really. For such a high cost, people can be bothered to remember that "windows+D = show desktop". It might be a good idea to finish the design prototypes and patents and sell them all off to a company like Logitech if you can. Take royalties, or a large buyout and let them get (likely) superior deals on manufacturing, distribution etc.

As for now, I'll just keep my $70 G15 board. It pretty much has all that I need for gaming and even features that this board might not have.

That's it. I'm out. I'm not going to pay $1200 for a keyboard that I use, that can get broken, no matter how fancy it is. At that price, it could only be a museum item. That price is a big big mistake.

Wow, I was totally unaware that $1200 would buy you a nice cell phone. 3 phones maybe... well I always figured it'd be a while before the price would come down to a place I could consider picking this up (sub $200) but I don't know how long that will take with this starting price point. I can understand the pricing, though - there's a lot of tech going into this board, which is why we haven't seen anything like it yet. There will certainly be people willing to pay that for cutting edge, there always is. For the rest of us, patience is truly a great virtue.

Tema-

As a fellow product dev guy (EE/ME/proto/etc), I know intimately the battle y'all are facing, and have faced. Pre-announcing a product is a dangerous gamble. Changing specs from the initial offering will always engender some hostility and sarcasm from those clamoring for something new. Radically changing those specifications..well, you know what happens then too. You can never please everyone, especially since the masses want the world, delivered and installed, for $39.95. Don't let the bastards get you down, but don't ignore them either. Keep on plugging.

That said, I think some of the disappointment has been justified. The initial release of information promised something with color OLED displays in ~110 keys and some truly unique layout features. The reality, now, seems to be PSTN B&W displays on much fewer keys, with a more limited layout, and a much higher (as yet TBD, I know $1200 is a 'just shut up ok?' initial number) price. The feature and cost differential make perfect sense to me as an engineer, but as a consumer it feels like a bait and switch. I think some thoughtful postings on the why of the changes would do a lot to smooth over the ruffled feathers here, and perhaps get some of the customers that have lost interest to regain it.

My $0.02, from the industry.

How about just 87 keys?

I think you should produce a version with no numeric keypad. I never use them anyway, and it would save another 20 or so keys. Of course, a numeric keypad would be easy to simulate as and when needed- the whole point of this keyboard is that you can change the keycaps!

As for all of the flack that you're taking, I think the product that it looks like you'll be producing now might not be as cool and flashy as the concept art, but will still be every bit as usable for people who wish to change keycaps for more serious reasons- switching between Dvorak/Qwerty, multiple language layouts, app-specific functions, etc.

A small screen (only needs to be the same size as the regular screens) on every key would be useful for some applications- photoshop for example uses space, control, shift etc. in all sorts of ways, it would be great to have the current function of the modifier keys displayed.

$1200... I guess "good mobile phone" did mean a [non diamond-studded] Vertu. So when the Optimus-113 comes out in 2008, I hope the price won't be over $2000. Luckily, I can start saving up now!

Any guesses on what the Upralvator will cost?

@Tema
The idea from the 113 is really good. And everybody want it. Nobody thinks about the costs of it.
I think it is a good think to make a "smaller" Version. And i can live with a b/w display, if the endprice goes down.
i would pay max. 150 euro.

So....i want to know the price of the 103...argh....but i must wait till 12.dec...

Don't worry be happy

Make the prototype.

Sell patents and ideas to Logitech or somebody else, and cover your losses.

This is very sad - Upravelator is looking pretty good though. Is that going to suffer the same demise, though?

what a rip-off. sony's arrogance is apparently contagious. and don't
expect a lot of automatic support from software developpers, since
very few people in the world will be able to get one of these at that
outrageous price. and what happened to OLED? they downgraded the thing
to yesterday's technology and raised the price into the stratosphere.i
used to be excited about this product.i could have stayed excited,
despite the changes, if it was going for less than $300.apparently
the studio's success has them deciding to become elitists now. it's
sad.
