Optimus-103 Logic Board
Perforation for flexible cables is clearly visible on this drawing. However, not every key on Optimus-103 will feature an LCD display. Space bar, return, both shifts, numeric keypad, the arrow keys and some other keys of secondary importance will all have only LED backlights.

This is done for the first model to fit in a reasonable price range, as one can easily appreciate by multiplying the price of a custom-made LCD display by amout of 'active' keys.

The only thing the ugly enter key had going for it was that there was more room for whatever display there was. I hate to be a total Doomsayer, but there are getting to be fewer reasons to buy this thing. I'll hold out for an actual Optimus board, but I'm not convinced the sales of this board will support another project.

Since when were the enter and spacebar keys of secondary importance?

I hate to agree, but the LCD on the numeric keypad, and the arrow keys are a HUGE deal. Another 25 keys with no LCD capabilities? We should almost call this Model the "78" or "88".

Pity about the spacebar, it would've been a great secondary location for incoming text messages or an RSS ticker or something.

That would have been absolutely fantastic.

This project is becoming less and less like the original intent back in 2005.

As you can read(Or can you?), they removed the LCD screens from these buttons to save the consumer money. The second version should include all of the features as originally intended.

I've been reading this journal since it was started but this is my first post.

I can live with removal of the 10 function keys but making Return and Space non-LCD has actually angered me.

Is it not possible to get some endorsement in order to make the Optimus-113 possible? It seems strange to make a 103, with limited LED keys and once released proceed with more advanced models. I for one will now hold out buying an Optimus till one matching the preview shows up. So that's my money you won't be able to use for future development. How many people like me are out there? Given that this is a niche market it should be all or nothing.

I think it would be a risk worth taking - to "get" some cash and build the original as intended.

What we have here is someone who has to be Anonymous to post, and believes he/she can read minds.

I for one, am not willing to buy this keyboard. I can wait until the 113, and won't buy it either if the numeric pad and arrow keys aren't programmable.

I will be there for the pre-order on a solid 113, but not this slimmed down version.

I still think this keyboard will sell, I just hope it doesn't leave a bad taste in enough peoples mouths to cause the 113 to never happen.

Art. We'll forgive you this time, it's understandable... first launch of an LCD keyboard and all... but the 113 really needs to have an LCD on every key.

Will the CTRL and Caps Lock keys have displays? Since there are some users, including me, that have those keys swapped, and the correct label on them would be great.

The price will anyway be higher than one which would suit just teenage gadget-lovers. Firsly this keyboard is desired by professionals of all kinds. We'll pay more for an uncircumcised idea. Hope full-LCD keyboard will be produced afterwards.

Or just think of returning a spacebar back into a list of keys with displays. It is one of the most flexible buttons in my everyday job.

Far left block of keys?
(Anonymous)
2006-11-21 10:10 pm UTC (link)
The block of 10 keys on the far left look awfully like the finction keys and on counting I counted 112 keys maybe 113. I thought this was a plan for the 103. have the function keys returned or have I made a mistake? Can someone correct me.

Also whats the turquoise rectangle top right?

Finaly, The loss of all the keys being LCD is a real letdown. I'm slightly annoyed at the way all these changes have been announced so slowly. I just syke myself up to the idea of the keyboard not having function keys and then another blow comes along ect ect. It is very annoying and the concept is slowly being drained away.
I can see why this decision has been made but, the non LCD keys need to have a pixaly LCD look for the keyboard to look right. At leaste fake that they are LCD's so it looks good on my desk.

I don't honestly see the deal here... why make this thing only half-assed? I got so excited about this when I saw the awesome render. Then the keys got layed out all weird. Then the extra keys got dropped. And now all keys aren't even programmable? This sucks. Hope you get to making the REAL Optimus keyboard soon.

and some other keys of secondary importance will all have only LED backlights.

how many more keys are we talking about?

So what if the keyboard is expensive? people will fork out the money for a keyboard fully made out of LCD screens. All of us are aware that this is a luxury and luxuries cost! I would be more than happy to pay more so I can have the initial concept in the flesh.

DO NOT MAKE THOSE KEYS LED backlight. You will end up with too much unwanted stock.

I'm interested to know, since the Logitech G15 has been around, I was actually quite interested in keyboard SDKs, and since that thing had a little extra movable LCD panel, will this thing have anything along those lines? I understand that it would be pretty trivial to just use the "unused keys" in certain applications as the blank usable space to write on, but I thought I'd ask and see what you all thought about that.

Developers: Don't listen to these negative comments, these people obviously have no idea what it takes to create a product like this from the ground up.

Posters/Fan Boys: The original idea in 2005 was just a concept, an idea that help guide the development of a product, almost no finished product looks any where as good as the concept. (just look at concept cars, when was the last time that you got to drive anything half as good looking as one of those). You should feel lucky that the optimus 103 is mearly a stepping stone to the keyboard that you really want, show some maturity and patience and wait. Keep in mind that every day you wait is another day closer another day they refine and improve the design, another day that the overall tech gets cheaper and better.

What about the feel of the keys?
(Anonymous)
2006-11-22 01:39 am UTC (link)
Hello,

I'd like to know what feel the keys have. Is this a membrane keyboard or a mechanical one? I like the feel of the IBM 80's classic keyboard or classic SUN keyboards of UltraSPARC servers.

I don't like the elimination of extra keys, I preferred the 113 keys version and only will buy one with a similar amount of keys. I will wait to this version.

I will buy a keyboard like this when having a similar number of extra keys as the initial version (113) and the feel of a classic IBM 80's keyboard or classic SUN keyboards.

Best regards,
timofonic

I understand the need, however as an artist, I must question the visual feel of the keyboard if selected keys do not match up to the style of the entire keyboard. Something to ponder...

Keep the keyboard consistent! I don't mind losing those extra keys on the left (Takes up desk space for mindless shortcut keys, IMO), but losing this functionality is a detriment.

Keep up the good work, and no matter what I plan on buying one to support the innovation!

Please consider making a model where all keys have LCD
I do not care what the price will be, but I’m not sure I’ll buy it if those 25 keys are missing
I know others that feel the same... this could be the perfect keyboard, but LCD’s on all keys is needed
It’s all or nothing... I don’t care about loosing the extra keys to the left
