It took three of them to capture her. That was why she was chosen.

Fierceness, intelligence, vigilance and bravery – these were the qualities they’d sought, traveling to the boundaries of their land to test each member of their tribe. They found many brave young warriors, many intelligent chiefs, many fierce hunters and many vigilant guardians. They found a few who had some combination of those qualities, but only one, only the girl Shagarra had all that they needed.

They told her she would win great accolades, but she slipped their trap.

They hunted her.

Captured her.

Chained her.

Changed her.

When Winning Feels Like Losing

Buffy knows that Merrick is shouting something but all she can hear is her own terror, burning bright behind her eyes. Yolk colored eyes, big-bad-wolf teeth – there isn't even time to wonder how this could be happening.

The world narrows until only a single thought exists – grab the stake. She finds it, lunges – and stabs the monster in the stomach. An eternity later, she stabs again and suddenly, she's covered with dust, all evidence gone.

Merrick is talking about weapons training. The words float past her.

She 's just won her very first battle. She thinks she might vomit.

Pro: He won't freak at the Slayer thing.
Con: (Buffy sighed. Willow had insisted that honesty was necessary.) She was still getting over freaking out at the vampire thing.

Pro: Good kisser. Oh yessssss… (Blushing, she scratched that last part.)
Con: No kisses under the sunlight. Ever.

(But on the other side….) Pro: Patrolling dates!
(She frowned.)

Con: Liquid diet.

Con: Nobody would approve.

Cons won.

(Buffy stared at the list.

Ripped it in two.

She'd handled worse odds before.)

Faith smirks, snuggling. "Why so gloomy?"

"Buffy didn't tell you about the Apocalypse?"

"You've gotta be kidding me."

"The Hellmouth will be opening this night."

"Then why're you here?"

"They told me to keep out of trouble." He sounds bitter.

She can relate. No matter what you do, you're the outsider.

Faith sighs. She has to go there, help them - but Xander had better stay out of it.

"That was great," she says, shoving him out of her room. "I gotta shower."

”Eureka!” Andrew ran into the room, waving a large book. When Buffy and Xander shot him a curious look, he sighed. ”You're supposed to reply 'You don't smell-a so good yourself.' Anyway, you said the Izzeemarc demons' power crystals make them invincible?”

”Yeah...?”

”Couldn't we trick them into giving us the crystals?” He showed them the book: 100 Cons And Scams.

”Like... winning the crystals at three-card monte?” Xander looked skeptical. ”I know they're not too smart, but would that work?”

Buffy shrugged. ”As long as they don't beware of geeks bearing grifts.”
