"I'm sorry, we have a 'no puking in the tutoring room' policy." I did not say this today to a super freaked-out mom who came in, whose daughter (in the first grade) is made so anxious by reading that she vomits. I did, however, think it. Because you just know who'd have to clean that up. (Have not yet had to clean up vomit. On my second day, however, I did have to mop up pee, since one of the little darlings had decided to urinate around the toilet instead of in it. Oh, the glamorous life of a manager.) Anyway, today had the potential to be pretty bad, because my boss got trapped all day at a meeting she was only supposed to be at for two hours. But I was fully staffed, which left me able to, you know, do my job. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do on Tuesday; originally we were told we'd be closing the centers so that full-time staff could all get trained on the new assessment procedures, and now we're told that, no, actually, everyone in my position will be returning to the centers in the afternoon while the higher-ups stay to get trained. This will leave me as the only full-time staff member in our center on the busiest day of the week when I've had no prep time and have to teach for three hours because we're short-staffed. The only reason it'll work is that we've assumed that we'd be closing and so haven't scheduled anything for those two days. nemaihne, we'll have to do dinner some other time. :-( Gotta love those last minute changes. *shakes fist* Things that are making me happy whenever they come on the radio these days: the John Mayer version of Free Falling (and yeah, "Daughters" is sexist and patronizing and I've heard he's a dick, but the man's voice is pretty awesome) and Come On Get Higher by Matt Nathanson. Yes, I still listen to the radio. Do you know the last time my iPod was updated? I don't. Listening to the radio is the only way I get new music. And yes, I'm aware of how pathetic that is. I have started the next tag-fic. But in the grand tradition of "ooh, shiny," I find myself wanting to write Who/Vorkosiverse crossover instead. |

*falls over* Today was . . . today was. We were way understaffed. I spent most of my time teaching, which drives me crazy - not because I don't enjoy it, but because it's not what I was hired to do. I discovered once again that I fail epicly at teaching math. My boss is going to have to do that from now on. I did, however, conduct my first job interview, which was sorta fun. Ohhh, the petty powers of a corporate peon. Bwahahaha. Did not watch the debate. I know who I'm voting for and short of both McCain and Palin literally becoming other people, nothing is going to change that. I'll watch The Daily Show for the sarcasm-inducing highlights and relish Obama's current eight point lead. A post on intellectual fans vs. emotional fans by xparrot. This is very thought-provoking and, I think, very true. It explains a lot about my perpetual bafflement with certain corners of fandom. I would add that some fandoms in general are perhaps more predisposed to one end of the spectrum or the other; the Vorkosigan fandom, fr'instance, strikes me as highly intellectual: lots of meta and lots of G-rated gen. Not that porn and intellect are mutually exclusive - there's nothing better than intellectual porn, in my opinion - but the more "emotional" fandoms gravitate toward it, I think. All of this just confirms something I've become more and more aware of over the years: fans are fans for many different reasons. I think there is a certain personality type, but beyond that - who knows? And people write fanfiction for many different reasons as well (please to be seeing my "fan writers" vs. "fans who write" theory - similar categories, perhaps, to the "intellectual" and "emotional" fan types). I'm interested to see that someone pointed out that "intellectual" has a negative connotation and prefers the term "analytical." Does anyone else agree with this? I think "intellectual" has good connotations - but then again, that's me. |

Um. Okay. Dude, wtf happened to my Obama icon? It is suddenly no longer there. It's been replaced by something else. None of my other icons have been affected, just that one!
*suspicious*
Edit: Have deleted the other icon and re-uploaded the Obama icon. Am still really suspicious, as the only icon affected was that one, but . . . we shall see. *shifty eyes*
P.S. I have today ooooooff!!! I'm going to clean my room and mail something to England that I've been meaning to and get my thesis bound. And write, hopefully. Yay!
P.P.S. Yow. I went and worked out yesterday at the YMCA where my best friend from high school works as a fitness instructor (one step down from personal trainer) and now my arms and legs and abs hate me. Eesh. |

FIC: Icarus in Flight It's Sunday night. Have a little porn. Title: Icarus in Flight Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing/Rating: R, Ten/Jack Word Count: 4500 Disclaimer: Not mine! RTD's. BBC's. Etc. Summary: A convalescing Time Lord is a bored Time Lord. Apparently. Author's Note: So, when I wish to bring the porn but the story doesn't want it, my preferred method is to tack on a sexy coda. To wit, this is the sexy bit that wouldn't fit in A Hand to Hold. It takes place about four days later in Cardiff. Many thanks once again to kivrin for the beta. ( Icarus in Flight )Feedback is, as ever, very much appreciated. |

August and September fic round-up This is sort of sad. Though considering the number of life shake-ups I've had recently, not as sad as it could be. AugustIn a Name, Vorkosigan/Temeraire, G, 2500 words Right at Home, Vorkosigan/Doctor Who, G, 3300 words When You Fly, Vorkosigan/Temeraire, G, 3300 words Unafraid, Curse of Chalion, PG-13, 3100 words Bursts of Light, Vorkosigan, G, 2000 words By Example, Vorkosigan, G, 2700 words A Test, a Miracle, a Curse, Curse of Chalion, G, 1000 words A Skewed Perspective, Vorkosigan/Doctor Who, G, 1900 words Total: 19,800 words SeptemberDirty Little Secret, PG-13, Buffy, 1200 words A Hand to Hold, PG-13, Doctor Who, 16,000 words Total: 17,200 words Coming attractions include: The sexy coda for "A Hand to Hold," which is drafted and just needs a beta; kivrin's bday fic, which will be domestic!Gilesy goodness, possibly with Olivia; my next tag-fic, which is Aral/Cordelia schmoop (no idea what this will entail yet); and something set in the "Countess and the Doctor" 'verse, either Martha taking Cordelia shopping in London or something from the Doctor's POV set the morning they met. I also just joined wintercompanion, a Jack/Doctor challenge comm, so we'll see what comes of that. It's been a slow couple of months, writing-wise, because it's been a really busy couple of months otherwise (finishing Rufus, moving back to the U.S., family shtuff, and then new and exhausting job), but things are calming down now so hopefully I can get back to writing more than five hundred words a night. |

Weekend. Finally. This working Saturdays thing is going to take some getting used to. Today was very quiet - actually, it's been quiet all week, which is bad because it means we're losing business (which we are, this last staff changeover having been The Last Straw for many people), but really actually kinda fine with me, since it lets me get my feet under me. Things remain a mess, but I'm getting better at my job. I like the management bits and the kidling-related bits and even the customer service bits. Am not overly comfortable with the sales bits at the moment, but I'll get there. I hate my biweekly managers' meeting. Hate it. I've only had two so far, but I can tell they're going to be the bane of my existence. They set expectations at one meeting and then ask for something completely different at the next. They have these numbers they think we should all just know (not that anyone knows what they are from meeting to meeting), so they make us turn our notes over so we can't read them off. They ask things like, "How are your academic progress numbers going to change by Monday?" I swear, I had to bite my tongue so hard not say, "Sorry, I'll just hop in my TARDIS and be right back with those, okay?" I prepped for my last meeting. I thought I was ready to go. And I wasn't. And I know that I'm being cut some slack right now because I'm brand new and I've inherited a godawful situation, but I like to exceed expectations when at all possible and they're making that hard. Welcome to Corporate America, I suppose. Coupled with all the irritations of Education America. *headdesk* Whatever. It is Saturday night. I have no plans. I'm going to eat my mother's cooking, sit on my ass, and write porn. And possibly watch some Doctor Who if I can talk my mother into it. Happy birthday, kivrin! You are a lovely friend and a marvelous beta and I hope to meet you IN PERSON sometime in the next year. *hugs* (B-day fic shall be late, but it will arrive eventually.) |

FIC: A Hand to Hold, 2/2 Title: A Hand to Hold, 2/2 Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing/Rating: PG-13, Ten/Jack Word Count: 16,100 (About 9000 this part) Disclaimer: Not mine! RTD's. BBC's. Etc. Summary: Rule #1 of synthesizing a cure for an alien plague and saving a planet of nine billion humans from total decimation: Take some of the cure with you when you leave. Just in case. Author's Note: SPOILERS for S4 of Doctor Who! Thanks to kivrin for the beta. Warnings for fairly self-indulgent h/c (albeit with a side of plot). I plan to have the sexy coda (which wouldn't fit in the story proper) up . . . probably not tomorrow. Thursday or Friday, hopefully. Part One( A Hand to Hold, 2/2 )Feedback. Muse. Y'all know the drill. :-) Current Mood: accomplished |

FIC: A Hand to Hold, 1/2 Gah, this thing has taken me forever. But! After over a month of listening to me whinge about it, here 'tis. Title: A Hand to Hold, 1/2 Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing/Rating: PG-13, Ten/Jack Word Count: 16,100 (About 7000 this part) Disclaimer: Not mine! I have the whole thing drafted, but the second part is still being fiddled with, so I'll post it sometime this week (hopefully tomorrow), and then the sexy coda (which wouldn't fit in the story proper) a couple days after that. ( A Hand to Hold, 1/2 )Stay tuned for part two. In the meantime, feedback feeds the Muse. |

And in the continuing saga of Stacy's New Job . . . Things continue to rock. I went into my actual center for the first time on Friday and it was . . . well, okay, the center is a bit of a mess, but there's tons of potential once everyone - by which I mean tutors, students, and parents - have been cured of their bad habits. For the tutors, that means giving a LOT more verbal praise and high fives and all that good stuff, as well as using the instructional best practices the company insists upon for a reason; for the kids that means butts in the seats during lessons; and for parents that means getting kids to their lessons on time and actually coming into the center, rather than asking the kids to meet them in Starbucks when they're done ( I know). There's a lot to be done, but the truth is that I totally love it. And my boss is a lot less polished than the person who trained me ("Okay, seriously, why are there piles of shit everywhere? Can we NOT HAVE piles of shit everywhere?!"), but in many ways that makes her easier to work with. We have a total tag-team thing going on and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to work with her. We're exact opposites, but in ways that will be complementary, not annoying (i.e. I'm detail-oriented to the point of not always catching the big picture; she catches the big picture, but sometimes isn't fussy enough about the little things). Writing: I achieved a draft of the Jack/Doctor a couple days ago, now I'm just polishing and getting it beta'd. And I want to write a sexy coda, since there is no room for it in the story. I'm hoping to post next week sometime. And then . . . hmm, I might write something Gilesy actually, because that fandom's been very quiet ever since summer_of_giles ended and it worries me. And then there will be tag-fic because I owe sibylle Aral/Cordelia schmoop from, like, months ago. But then! Then I think there shall be Martha taking Cordelia shopping in London with alien hijinks. *rubs hands in glee* |
