Leonard "GQMF" Nimoy Q&A on 11/7/09!

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 8:34 PM

Yesterday, my friends and I went to a screening of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home at Paramount Studios, sponsored by the California State Parks Commission. A totally amazing experience watching ST: IV on the big screen FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM REELS FROM THE 1980s! They had a "previously on Star Trek" segment in the beginning and a different title sequence oozing with 1980s flair. Plus, it was just that much more exciting seeing the film the way it was supposed to be seen -- on a huge screen and rumbling with surround sound.

I'm no Annie Liebowitz with the camera, okay.

Oh, and afterwards there was a Q&A with the illustrious director himself! Who is Leonard Nimoy. (If you didn't know that, Vulcan nerve pinch yourself right now.) My friend was awesome enough to record the whole thing on her camera and upload it to YouTube, and she gave me permission to post it here. Credit for the videos goes to Stella Cao!

Sorry the sound quality isn't the best. I recorded a couple clips myself, and they all turned out the same because of the echo in the auditorium.

Rest of the vids after the jump!!! )

A fellow fan at the TrekBBS message board posted the first scans from the upcoming hardcover book Star Trek The Art of the Film by Titan Books, on sale November 17th. You can see the sketches artwork for Starfleet Academy, the Orion cadet Gayla, the new U.S.S. Enterprise exterior and interior, the damaged USS Kelvin and even Klingon cruisers.

You can find larger versions of those images at the TrekBBS

JJ Project Rumors from Wired

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Haven't seen this particular rumor here, so let's go!

J.J. Abrams Might Direct NBC Spy Drama Undercovers

n the wake of his Star Trek hit, director-producer J.J. Abrams has a ton of TV and film fodder in the pipeline, including a new prime-time spy drama. If he can find time between 11 other projects, Abrams plans to direct the pilot episode of NBC’s upcoming Undercovers.

Abrams earlier directed the legendarily expense Lost pilot episode, which launched his movie career. Undercovers offers a Mr. & Mrs. Smith-meets-The Bourne Identity concept, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A nearly identical premise failed to find traction last year when My Own Worst Enemy tanked on NBC. The short-lived series cast Christian Slater as an amnesiac spy living a double life in the suburbs.

Network execs have reason to be optimistic if Abrams takes the helm. As creator of TV’s Alias and director of Mission: Impossible III, he clearly brings a steady hand to the high-tech spy genre.

Mr. Multitasking strikes again? Not sure even JJ can get me to watch a spy show that isn't Burn Notice after how awful My Own Worst Enemy turned out. Not to mention his approach to intrigue is to perpetuate mystery without substance. Hm.

I was watching TOS today with my fellow GQMF [info]criandomalvas, when we came across this most disturbing image of Spock in a most disturbing episode, Plato's Stepchildren. I thought I should share it with you guys.

Man offers little and asks for so much )

DISCUSS.

Ever since I found out that Joyride, a staple of every sleepover I ever went to, was written by JJ, I've been slowly working my way through the other movies he's written. I was watching Regarding Henry (plot: Harrison Ford loses memory, learns to not be a corporate d-bag) the other day, and who should turn up in a cameo?

Go to 9:33 for the relevant clip. Feel free to discuss gum cracking, headphones, fanboying about being in the same scene as Han Solo, tight 90s jeans, how cute JJ is here, how cute JJ always is, why he has not aged in the intervening 18 years, and the sad lack of lens flare.

Look what I found! So GQ!

omg it's a siiiiign

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 11:14 PM
I idly thought about doing this last night, but thought, eh, it's not necessary. Then our lovely mods added a Next Generation tag, and I took that as a sign that this Must Be.

So, TNG GQMF PICSPAM POST!

I'll start with the catalyst for this post:

I'll admit it, I saw that and was looking for an excuse to share it with everyone. Bad thoughts, I has them. (coughanyonethathasabettercopyplztobeshowingmecough)

Why hellooooooooo..... )

Slightly off topic but still relevant to our interests, I seem to recall Brent Spiner having one of those extreeeeeeeeme macros shown to him on twitter - or was it someone else, or am I making that up entirely? If I'm not, anyone happen to have it handy?

Mod post: new tags

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 9:22 PM
Have added the following tags:
  • nichelle nichols/uhura
  • george takei/sulu
  • james doohan/scotty
  • walter koenig/chekov
  • next generation
  • voyager
  • enterprise
  • deep space nine
I also made a 'dvd' tag 'cause the release is coming up, renamed the !wednesday tag to reflect the addition of crafting, and renamed 'premieres' to 'premieres/award shows/events'.  Please tag accordingly!

Suggestions for other tags are welcome; however, please keep in mind (1) how many posts would be able to be tagged with the new tag -- let's say 10 or so at a minimum for the tag to be useful -- and (2) whether those posts are already adequately covered by other tags.

If original posters could go back and tag their entries as you have time, that'd be great -- if you want to post links here in the comments for me and the other mods to tag, that'd be fine too.  Thanks!!!

New candids of Anton Yelchin (and costars Jodie Foster & Mel Gibson) from the NYC set of dark comedy "The Beaver". The film stars Gibson as Walter Black, a depressed man who believes a beaver puppet he wears is real. Anton plays his son.

NEW YORK - OCTOBER 21: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and Anton Yelchin are seen on the movie set of 'The Beaver' on October 21, 2009 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Jodi Foster looks so much like Martha Stewart here it's creeping me out. )

For our New Yorkers, Backstage.com says production is ongoing until Nov. 20th.

JJ @ IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards

JJ Abrams and wife Katie McGrath attended the 2009 International Womens Media Foundation's 'Courage In Journalism' Awards in Beverly Hills last week.

Award winner Iryna Khalip and JJ.

Famous Hollywood film director J. J. Abrams, creator of Lost series and director of Mission: Impossible blockbuster, was an honorary guest.

“Abrams told me he would like to know more about Belarus, but Hollywood is too lazy to look for news from other continents in rare spare moments. The famous director said there’s acute lack of information and asked me to send him news from Belarus in order he and his charity foundation to spread it in Hollywood. I said we have an excellent website www.charter97.org with an English version, where all news from Belarus, including my articles, are published. Abrams assured me he would read and spread news from Charter’97 website. ‘If we know the situation in your country, we’ll be able to help you,’ the film director said meaning the Belarusian civil society and journalists,” the journalist said.

We recommend that you comment with a link to your journal/youtube/DeviantArt/etc, where we can all bust a gut laughing at your talent, as opposed to posting all the pictures/videos/etc in a single comment.

Random Leonard Nimoy at Museum of Science

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 8:56 PM
Back in the mid-80s, the Boston Museum of Science had an Omni/IMAX theater that played this introduction to every movie in order to show off its sound system. The woman narrator is incredibly perky and annoying.

BUT! There is LEONARD NIMOY!!! Which is why I'm sharing. This isn't my video, I just found it when I was googling for the audio of this.

First, Leonard Nimoy at 1:00

Secondly (AND MOST AWESOMELY!!!) Who Put the Bomp? at 1:17

And finally, just a tiny bit at 3:13

Untitled from Recumbent Goat on Vimeo.

Sometimes, I love working in my little bookstore. Some times I find little gems in our DVD section, like this one.

Please to be ignoring my camera's lensflare. Shatner attracts lensflare like woah.

If you haven't seen this hilarious little documentary narrated by our dear Mr Shatner, seek it out and do it. For the lulz, if nothing else. I'm pretty sure anything informative was lost in his self-appreciation.

But, quite honestly, the DVD cover fail is one of the most hilarious things about this. )
