Equality of women around the world.
GENEVA - Women in predominantly Muslim countries are struggling to compete for jobs, win equal pay and hold political office, falling behind the rest of the world in eliminating discrimination, a report said Thursday.
Nordic nations, by contrast, received the best overall grades for gender parity in education, employment, health and politics, according to the review of 128 countries compiled by the World Economic Forum.
The United States received mixed marks.
"The purpose of the rankings is to bring out where a country stands in terms of dividing the resources that are available between women and men," said Saadia Zahidi, one of the report's three co-authors.
Sweden, which has more women than men holding high political office, topped the list, followed by fellow Nordics Norway, Finland and Iceland. New Zealand, Philippines, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, and Spain round out the top 10.
Zahidi said religious and cultural reasons are important in understanding why men have economic, political, education and health advantages over women in much of the world.
Ex-Soviet nations with a Muslim majority, such as Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, were in the middle of the field, but nearly all countries in the Middle East place in the bottom third. Pakistan, Chad and Yemen were at the bottom.
Women living on the Arabian peninsula receive nearly as much education and health benefits as men there, Zahidi said, "but they're held back on political participation and economic empowerment."
The annual study does not take into account a country's overall level of economic development: women in Sri Lanka, South Africa, Cuba and Lesotho all fared better — relatively speaking — than women in industrialized nations such as Japan, Switzerland and the United States, which fell eight places from last year's study to 31st.
The U.S. scored lower because the percentage of female legislators, senior officials and managers fell in 2007, and the pay gap between women and men widened, the report said.
The world's most populous nations — China and India — were hurt in the study by the preference of many parents for boys, which has led to abortions and infanticide being directed primarily against girls.

Sweden is a lovely country. Denmark and Iceland are fantastic as well. The standard of living in most Scandinavian countries is amazing. I can't speak the lingo though :(

IMO sweden is probably one of the most ideal countries for me...liberal, and loves hockey, what could be better?! due to italy's super-lax citizenship laws, allowing anyone descended from an italian immigrant to claim citizenship provided their ancestors never RENOUNCED italian citizenship, i could become an EU citizen...but at the same time there are negatives, as well. a lot of Europe, including Sweden, is having the same sort of issues with Muslims that we have with Mexicans. it actually looks kinda identical. people on one side are all "oh they need to integrate, look at all this crime" people on the other side are all "we just need to provide more money and sensitivity towards cultural differences" etc etc.

idc about taxes though, and thats one of the biggest gripes americans seem to have about other western countries, as if we're REALLY any better. if my taxes are going towards services i USE, like health care or higher education, i am all for it. if my taxes are going towards senseless wars, then i have a major problem.

woot monologue

Muslims are not that much of a problem really. Personally I have never had any problems and there is a huge Muslim population in my town.

Italy's laws screw you over if the eligible relative is a woman born before 1948. I thought I was eligible through my grandpa, but my great-grandpa became an American citizen before he was born, which counts as a renouncement. I thought it would work through my great-grandma, who never became an American citizen, but no luck.

that sucks :( my only roadblock is needing my mother's signature (unlikely to happen), although i read that actually applying IN italy negates that; but i have absolutely no plans to pursue it, really, it's just one of those things where it's nice to know just in case.

I totally agree with you. Universal health care on top of equality for women? What's not to like?

I watched an interesting documentary last year about the shortage of girls in China. Because of the Communist regime's "one child per family" policy and the traditional preference of sons over daughters, many families had sons only, the end result being all those now-grown sons wanting wives and not being able to find any. The documentary went on to say how attitudes in China are now changing because of this, with more and more families wanting girl babies, and the government actually campaigning for and rewarding families who keep their girls.

So why do you think this is happening?

It's a conspiracy! They plot to take away our access to birth control and safe abortions so they can keep us barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.
