Pasco man angry over his dead cats says he shot neighbor twice in back
LAND O'LAKES — Frederick Heustis admits he shot his neighbor.

"Yes, I'm the bad guy," he said Wednesday afternoon from an interview room in the Land O'Lakes jail, where the 67-year-old is being held on a charge of attempted murder.

Heustis lives in Shady Hills, and on Tuesday evening, he shot his neighbor — Joseph Sosnowski, 68 — twice in the back on Sosnowski's porch. The bullets exited through his chest. A Pasco Sheriff's Office spokesman said Sosnowski, who spent 12 years working as a detention deputy in the very jail where his neighbor sits, is in stable condition and recovering.

Heustis said it was about his cats. He has about nine of them and they live outside. Heustis suspects Sosnowski's grandson and another neighbor have been killing them.

"Thirteen dead in three years," Heustis said.

There was a confrontation back in November involving Heustis, the grandson and two other men. Heustis said he caught them going through his property and overheard one say of some cats, "There's two of them. Which one should we get first?"

The three men told authorities they were just walking down Haddock Drive when Heustis charged them with a gun and said he would kill them. The revolver was missing a spring and wouldn't work. Heustis said he just wanted to scare them.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He was convicted of that charge two weeks ago and given two years of probation. He said his probation officer told him that if he did anything wrong, he would spend 38 months in prison.

The retired car mechanic, who also faced aggravated assault charges in 1980 and 2002, said he has lived in Shady Hills for 30 years and bought the land because it was cheap. He likes his privacy.

Divorced and with a grown son who sometimes visits, Heustis said he lives alone with his two birds — Tweetie Deetie and Hoodie Doodie — and his cats.

"That's my family," he said. "And I'm going to protect them."

He said he has found his cats shot inside his yard, but the authorities told him there's nothing they can do. "They didn't see it happen," he said.

Heustis said he was in his yard Tuesday working on his tractor when Sosnowski called to him through the fence.

"I tried to ignore him," Heustis said.

After Sosnowski called to him a second time, Heustis replied: "Hey, Joe, what's the problem?"

Heustis said Sosnowski told him that one of his cats — a black cat named Black Kitty — had been sitting on his grass in his yard for four days. Heustis said he told him to spray the cat with some water and he'll go away.

According to Heustis, Sosnowski replied: "Don't get smart with me, you're in enough trouble as it is." Heustis said his neighbor then threatened to complain to the county about the junk in Heustis' yard.

"He was being nasty to me," Heustis said. "He called to me like I was some kind of dog."

They argued and parted, Heustis said, and he went inside to his bedroom. He said he started shaking, and his whole body got flushed with rage.

"I was burning up," he said. "And I couldn't take it anymore."

Then he said: "I picked up my revolver and put it in my pocket."

He walked over to Sosnowski's house. He said they argued some more and Sosnowski grabbed the phone to call the police.

"When he had the phone in his hand, I was like, 'If I'm going to jail, it's going to be for a good reason,' " Heustis said.

And he shot him. Twice.

"They said I just walked back home, but I don't remember it," said Heustis, who said he was "out of it" when it all happened.

When asked if he feels guilt or remorse, Heustis said: "Yeah, I feel bad I shot him. But I wanted him to shut up and leave me alone."

He said he kept thinking of his cats: "Leave my cats alone. They are people too."

Heustis hopes one of his other neighbors is feeding his cats and birds. He misses them. Other than that, he said jail is okay. He can't get his pain pills for his bad back, he said, but they're giving him his heart medication. He had a heart attack last year and was using a wheelchair at the jail Wednesday afternoon.

He said jail life is much like his regular life: eating, napping, watching TV. Although television upsets him.

"Everything is so violent," he said. "They don't have any Ozzie and Harriet anymore."

He said he wasn't able to sleep well in his house because of his worry for his cats.

"For three years, I put up with it," he said. "I'm mad as hell."

But, he said: "Last night I slept better than I have in a long time."

Source.

If someone was killing my cats, I'd have a hard time not doing what he did, as well...

Disclosure: I'm not a pet person. I have one fish that's probably only alive through the grace of the deities.

That being said, I can kind of - kind of see where he's coming from? But, um, shooting a person over a cat is a little ... well, overreaction. Just my opinion.

And I just do not get "cats are people, too." No, no they're not. They're cats.

If someone killed my dog I wouldn't shoot but sure as hell would knock his/her teeth out. Whoever killed those cats need to diaf.

That being said it seems he has an anger problem based on the previous assault charges and way he describes not remembering all the details of the shooting. He seems lonely too.

uh ... some of these comments here. i'm not condoning cat killing; i think there are better ways to deal with the problem, but i sure as hell don't think shooting someone is ok. he shouldn't even have so many cats, especially outdoor ones. i don't think either party is right in this case. but:

Man, I feel terrible because I have been struggling with being a good pacifist lately, but man...if someone hurt my dog I would at the very least jump on them and make a necklace of their teeth, maybe go into their house and wreck up the place, screaming and with blood smeared across my mouth. Is it the right thing to do? Of course not! That wouldn't fix my dog! But uh, mama bear smash

I think that killing a cat is a heinous action but even if someone thinks his or her cats are like people, the cats still aren't actually people. There is no doubt in my mind that shooting the neighbor was by far the worst action, and the comments here freak me out.

As someone who has had their drunk neighbor come into their yard, shoot my dog several times because he was too drunk to aim properly, threaten me with the shotgun after coming up on my deck and yell at me for fleas in his yard, and then pretty much get away with it? Yeah, I'm with this guy.

If someone accidentally hits one of my cats in the road, it's a tragedy, and I'm not going to go after them. We live in a bad stretch where people love to floor it and damn anything that gets in their way, so it happens. If someone comes and tries to intentionally harm any of my cats? They're not walking away.

For those that don't understand the whole 'cats are people, too,' it's not that they (or even I) mean that they're literally people. It means that cats, and all animals, should be treated with the same respect as you would assume one person would treat another. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case: people don't respect each other, and plenty don't respect animals, either.

I'm just gonna say that because cats aren't humans, it doesn't mean their lives are any less valuable/give people a reason to go "oh well". I'm quite sick of all this HUMAN LIFE = SUPERIOR shit. If any living creature meant the world to someone, it doesn't give YOU the right to take that importance away by saying they're not human.

I don't agree with him shooting the guy, but I would take actions to make sure my pets are %100 safe within my own power.

Dogs aren't people? Whatever; mine are family and you fuck with my family you fuck with one of my mother's three guns and the NRA sticker on her car. And I'm okay with that.

I think people are assuming here that this shooting occured in a neighborhood or something, but it seems pretty clear to me that this happened in a rural area where both parties own substantial amounts of property - enough for it to be referred to as "land" in this article and for at least one of them to own a tractor. In that case, nine cats living outdoors, at least part of the time? Pretty par for the course.

Yeah, this is completely understandable. I don't blame the guy. However, do I blame him for letting his cats roam around out doors in the first place. You are pretty much asking for your cats to die early if you do that. :(

Yeah yeah I get it, pets aren't people. However, if someone deliberately harmed mine again and again, in my property no less? I'd make sure they wouldn't harm anything that I hold dear ever again.

I mean, this whole thing screams "Hey neighbour, I have zero respect for you, I want and can fuck your house up anytime I want, I could do to your kids what I keep doing to your cats, if I deemed it right. Because you're nothing but trash to me."

Note that if it were an accident, it's a whole different story. A guy had run over my cat, but this of course wasn't his fault, it was mine for having her live outdoors in the streets.
