Paying Hillary's debts?
Carrie Budoff Brown reports that Obama, campaigning at Luis's Taqueria in Woodburn, Ore., told reporters that he has not discussed whether to help relieve Hillary Rodham Clinton's $11 million debt if he were to get the nomination. He did not, however, close the door to such an arrangement.

"That is not a conversation we have had because our working assumption is that we are still in the middle of a race," Obama said. "I think historically after a campaign is done and you want to unify the party particularly when you have a strong opportunity you want to make sure you are putting that opponent in a strong position to work to win an election in November. So we obviously would want to have a broad-ranging discussion conversation with Sen. Clinton about how I could make her feel good about the process and have her on the team moving forward. But it is premature right now. She is still actively running and we still got business to do here in Oregon."

Obama also gave a rather muted reaction to news that, by some media outlet counts, he has overtaken the New York senator in the superdelegate lead.

"I am gratified that we got some superdelegates coming our way," he said. "Our focus has always been on pledged delegates. The Americans to vote for us ... we think that ultimately that should be the strongest measure of who is the nominee. But if superdelegates also feel we are going to be a storng candidate then I am very pleased with that."

Might as well, might show he has no hard feelings against her?

Well it's not as if he'd actually be using any of his money, I don't think that's legal.

But I imagine him setting up a fund-raiser and people giving that Donate button a mean side-eye

why not?

I'm not going to worry about it too much. I'd prefer if he directly paid any vendors/small businesses that she owes just as a way to help her out but not give any money to that douchebag Mark Penn.

I'm exactly the same way...I think it would be a GOOD thing to help pay her debts and reach across the aisle, but the thought of any of that money going to that sweaty ballsack Penn just rankles me.

Seriously, yeah. No $$ for him. That direct payment thing sounds like a good idea.

He's so damn eloquent.

It's also an awesome gesture for him to even consider this. Would she do the same?

That's EXACTLY what I thought, "would she do the same?"

Honestly, I don't think she would.

Wait, is it suddenly standard practice to pay for the winner of the primary race to pay the loser's debts? I don't even understand why this is something being talked about unless he's trying to get her on the VP ticket or some other position in his cabinet.

I do like the idea in the other comments about paying the vendors directly, so that nobody who provided services for either candidate gets screwed over.

HRC has loaned her own campaign around $11 million. He would be paying her back directly. I don't think it's necessary, but would probably be a good idea to make him look like the better person.

It's a nice gesture and all, but she's got another $100mil of her own to pay off her debt.

Don't do it, Obama!

To be quite honest, I don't think she'd accept. Not only would that be the final blow to her campaign it would be done so much to his strength that it would be embarrassing. To have him graciously escort her off the political stage like that... no, she is, for better or worse, a fighter.
