Montana City Wants Your Facebook Information
Montana City Wants Your Facebook Information

People applying for jobs with the city of Bozeman, Montana, are now being asked to list their memberships in online forums and social networks, and to provide all user names and passwords required to access their accounts.

Along with the usual paperwork, the city requires all job applicants to sign a waiver giving it permission to check "background, references, character, past employment, education, credit history, criminal or police records." Nothing terribly unusual about that, but it gets a bit sticky soon after.

"Please list any and all, current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.," the waiver reads. It also provides three lines so applicants can list URLs, user names and passwords for any social networks or similar sites they may belong to.

City attorney Greg Sullivan defended the demand for the information, saying that while Bozeman takes privacy rights "very seriously," it also has to ensure that its employees are men (and women) of high moral fiber. "We have positions ranging from fire and police, which require people of high integrity for those positions, all the way down to the lifeguards and the folks that work in city hall here," Sullivan said. "So we do those types of investigations to make sure the people that we hire have the highest moral character and are a good fit for the City."

He also offered assurances that the city wouldn't be looking at any information that it's not supposed to have access to and can't Constitutionally make use of. "One thing that's important for folks to understand about what we look for is none of the things that the federal Constitution lists as protected things, we don't use those," he explained. "We're not putting out this broad brush stroke of trying to find out all kinds of information about the person that we're not able to use or shouldn't use in the hiring process." He added that nobody had ever removed their name from consideration for a job because of the request.

Nothing to worry about, then. It's good to know that this isn't actually a gross invasion of privacy because for a minute there I was a little disturbed by the idea of handing over that sort of information to a faceless, powerful government entity. Silly me.

UM NO.

Can someone, like, sue agaisnt that? No employer should have the right to passwords to any and all sites. Of course, you could also lie over being a member, but the point still stands.

Like I could even remember every account I've ever made.

And like I'd give you my passwords.

Okay, but, seriously, this is like requesting a copy of someone's house key when they apply for a job. IT DON'T MAKE NO SENSE. If they keep the naughty stuff private, so it should remain.

And if you could include copies of the keys to your house, car and diary, that would be just perfect. Y'know, so we can make sure you don't have any ~morally questionable items stashed away or ~ungodly thoughts once in a while. And also, if you could turn over your laptop and/or home computer so we can check the hard drive for any ~indecent materials, that would be good too. Because everybody knows it's totally impossible to separate one's home/online life from their work/offline life.

"We're not putting out this broad brush stroke of trying to find out all kinds of information about the person that we're not able to use or shouldn't use in the hiring process."

Um, no. That's exactly what you're doing. I'm guessing they want the passwords to make sure they can see all of your info - to make sure you don't have anything ~incriminating disabled from public viewing? Idk, this whole thing is gross.

Also, I love how female employees are added as a parenthetical afterthought: "it also has to ensure that its employees are men (and women) of high moral fiber." Lovely~

WTF?? Arrrrgh!!!! Above and beyond privacy (which is absolutely the issue here and where the line will have to be drawn in law) this is also an issue of ignorance of basic psychology. Yes, yes I know - logic and science have no place with these people.

So much of what any of us do on the internet represents our FANTASY LIFE. What we read, where we hang out, what kind of persona we put across. We get to go the full 180 of being *exactly* who we say we are or being a *completely* fabricated person - and we get to share it with other people and have fun, grow, find out different things about ourselves, explore aspects of being that are just too scary IRL. That's what fantasy IS FOR. Our minds create fantasy for a purpose, and this is it - it lets us look before we leap.

Last time I checked, a fantasy life whether it be in your head or with bondage mistresses playing S&M games or writing the Great American Fanfic Novel or playing RPGs was 1) HEALTHY AND NORMAL and 2) NOT indicative of one's moral fiber nor a predictor of future actions.

And NO ONE, I MEAN NO ONE has the fucking right to have access to your fantasies. EVER.

(I give up, I'm just gonna be pissed all day - stooopid ontd_p and all the stoooopid articles posted today. grr. argh.)
