thanks! :) This is a good summation:

'3:46 PM ET -- Major uptick in violence reported. In the last hour, there has been a sharp spike in the number of (unconfirmed) reports about intensified violence:

From ABC's Jim Sciutto: "inside the protests tonight, if you support ahmadinajad, no police, you criticize him, get pepper spray, tear gas, batons... Anti-govt protests have spread to other Iranian cities, incl Rasht... We witnessed police spraying pepper gas into the eyes of peaceful female protesters... Two worlds in Tehran tonight. Support Ahmadinejad, free rein. Oppose him, risk police attacks, tear gas, batons, arrest8 minutes ago from web"

From an emailer Salim: "This is beginning to mirror what I witnessed in the first revolution. When people start taking over military centers. There is report that a basiji center in Northern Tehran around Tajrish has been captured by the protesters. This would potentially mean weapons in hands of protesters. I'll let you know if I heard more."

From @tehranbureau: "basij and security forces had fought for hours to subdue the people... My friends who work in the tehran hospitals said the number of injured was staggering"

From @winston80: "heavy clashes in Shiraz (southern Iran) reported. ppl attacking police"

From @iranelection09: "URGENT JUST IN, there are TANKS in front of the interior ministry of tehran in valiasr st. & fatemi cross CAREFUL"

Ayatollahs Protest Election Fraud

By MUHAMMAD SAHIMI in Los Angeles | 14 June 2009

[TEHRAN BUREAU] Mir Hossein Mousavi’s, the main reformist rival to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, letter to the important ayatollahs in the holy city of Qom, asking them to protest the fraud and declare it against Islam, has sparked protests by the ayatollahs and clerics as well.

The Association of Combatant Clerics, which consists of moderate and leftist clerics and includes such important figures as former president Mohammad Khatami, Ayatollah Mohammad Mousavi Khoiniha, and Grand Ayatollah Abdolkarim Mousavi Ardabili, issued a strongly-worded statement, calling the results of the election invalid.

Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygaani, an important cleric with a large number of followers, warned about the election results and the importance that elections in Iran retain their integrity.

Grand Ayatollah Yousef Saanei, a progressive cleric and a confidante of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, has declared that Mr. Ahmadinejad is not the legitimate president and cooperation with him, as well as working for him, are haraam (against Islam and a great sin). He has also declared that any changes in the votes by unlawful means are also haraam. Several credible reports indicate that he has traveled to Tehran in order to participate in nationwide protests scheduled for Monday (June 18). It is said that he has planned a sit-in in some public place, in order to further protest election fraud. His website has been blocked.

Credible reports also indicate that security forces have surrounded the offices and homes of several other important ayatollahs who are believed to want to protest election fraud. Their websites cannot be accessed, and all communications with them have been cut off.

The nation is waiting to hear the views of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, the most important ayatollah living in Iran and the strongest clerical critic of the conservatives. He has been asked to issue a clear statement, explaining his views about the election fraud.

Mr. Khatami, who campaigned strongly for Mr. Mousavi, is also under house arrest.

Talked to my sister today who has quite the stake in this all as her best friend lives in Tehran, as well as her ex. Two relatives are there right now and I've got confirmation that people on the streets ARE talking about tanks and it's not just an internet rumor? I've been avoiding a lot of posts on this in various comms because ... some of the comments have annoyed me idk. There are honestly people (and politicians) trying to make this about the US, or about our influence on them or something.

I feel like ... I am just being grumpy and emotional and getting angry at the wrong people though lol.

1:30 update: Tehranbureau is reporting that Mousavi’s wife, Zahra Rahnavard, has made a public appearance calling for a national strike on Tuesday and a peaceful protest Monday in 20 cities across the country.

1:05 update: According to our private phone conversations with people in Tehran, hundreds of parents have gathered by a police station in Yousef Abad, now known as Seyyed Jamal Aldin Asad Abadi, with their hands raised to the sky saying “Obama, please help us, they are killing our young children.” They were gathering there because their kids are missing and they were trying to find out where they are.

Also, according to eyewitness accounts, gunshots could be heard last night until 3am in Elahiyeh, alongside chants of “God is great!” from people on their rooftops. This was a widespread tactic in the 1979 revolution, in which people were urged to take to their rooftops and shout “Allah-u Akbar.”

Reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi has taken off his clegry robe in protest.'

I'm using pagereboot to try and take down a lot of ahmadinejad's websites, and his supporters, and pretty much all of the websites that are controlled by the government of Iran to spread lies about what's happening. I dunno if it's a good idea- to take out all fake information? It's fake, but it's still information, I suppose. I dunno, honestly, but I'm just going to keep doing it.

This sucks and I'm really f**king aggravated by everything that's happened. EVERYTHING.

I feel like even if the crowds / youth / Mousavi (Rezaee & Karoubi, for that matter) supporters banded together long enough to put up a strong coalition that didn't have to resort to rioting and throwing rocks, still nothing will come to fruition because there's so much secrecy and corruption in the current government. They are the ones with guns and the voters are the ones with rocks.

The way they've handled this is so indicative of their guilt, it's appalling. Arresting people? Putting out communication devices? Having higher ups from the election committees speaking out against fraud? Seriously? And you think people will take your word when you give a victory speech, Ahmadi?

Equally disconcerting - other countries and their right wing groups lauding Ahmadinejad because it's less of a burden when their own interests come to mind. It's disgusting to me how some commentators on TV say it's good for oil prices or keeping nuclear issues at bay to have someone like Ahmadinejad in power because they can peg him as out of control or extremist. Like they couldn't deal with someone who seems sane.

It's such a shame in every possible way.

It's like they don't even care that everyone knows they faked it out. They're basically parading it in everyone's faces, Nah nah nah, you can't stop us! That's what pisses me off the most about getting rid of the communication and everything, because it's just so obvious that it was rigged. They aren't trying to hide it. They might as well just wear a sash that says they rigged it, and go about daily life.
