The Russian Bear Slashes a Social Network
By Owen Thomas, 2:24 AM on Tue Jan 6 2009, 15,854 views+

The bubble in social networking has burst, decisively. LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance, we're told.

The quirky site, part blog and part social network, is best known for its users' weird obsessions — like the troublesome clique of Harry Potter erotica writers, whose outré tastes ran afoul of LiveJournal's efforts to comply with U.S. child-pornography laws. (Oddly, the site also gained a following in Russia, which led to its acquisition by Sup.) All that adds up to an environment even more distasteful to advertisers than the typical social site.

The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support. Matt Berardo, a Yahoo executive hired on last summer, is also believed to be gone.

The company's Moscow-based management has told employees it blames the "global economic downturn" — the kind of pat excuse every boss is giving for layoffs, even when mismanagement or a bad business plan is really to blame. The brutal, abrupt cuts suggest something different: That Sup founder Andrew Paulson (above), who paid an estimated $30 million for LiveJournal a little over a year ago, has realized his expensive mistake in buying at the top of the bubble. Someone familiar with the company tells us Paulson lost the CEO job last summer to Annelies van den Belt, a former News Corp. executive, and was given the meaningless title of chairman; he's essentially out of the company now.

Executives at Six Apart, the blog-software company which sold LiveJournal to Sup, are happily counting the money in its bank. And they should consider themselves lucky that Vox, the LiveJournal knockoff it started, hasn't been more popular. At this point, having a larger social network in the portfolio would be a drag on the company's value.

LiveJournal, founded by engineer Brad Fitzpatrick in 1999, predated most blogging services and social networks, and anticipated many of their features. (Some of Fitzpatrick's software is vital to the operation of Facebook and other large sites today.) But Fitzpatrick never figured out how to turn it into a business. Instead, he sold it to Six Apart, which didn't have much more luck.

The weakest in the herd are always the first to fall. Facebook and MySpace, so far, have resisted layoffs. A host of also-ran social networks — Hi5, MyYearbook, and other obscurities — could be next. It's only a matter of time before investors reach the same apparent conclusion as Paulson: that there's a lot of fuss in running a social network, but not that much money.

It wasn't 20 it was 13, LJ has made a Twitter post about it and Gawker needs to get over their fear of fandom before someone writes non-con slash about them.

I think LJ will be okay but if they want to cut costs why not go back to making LJ invite-only for free accounts. It would cut down on the trolls and save them money, we all win.

I've seen speculation that the layoffs may have been planned, since they did just move the servers away from San Fran, but I'll wait and see. I'm not going to go running until I hear something definitive on an LJ news feed.

But can someone tell me why something like LJ needs a whole ton of employees? If the software is written and it works reasonably well, what is there to do but process credit card payments (which is almost always done by third-party companies anymore anyway)?

The weakest in the herd are always the first to fall.

Layoffs have nothing to do with being the weakest in the heard. Sometimes companies that have layoffs before other companies are just more aware of a situation and proactive in trying to handle it.

Sometimes not having layoffs means being in denial which can be pretty damn devastating to the company.

Word. I've worked for companies where the folks up top were going on saying "everything is fine! everything is fine!" and then they go belly-up, and EVERYONE loses their job.

I'm not going to panic yet.

I do hate how they describe LJ as only consisting of p0rn. Sorry, but I find the whores (both in the friending and more literal sense) on MySpace to be more offensive than Harry/Draco banging away in the Room of Requirement in a story I have to actually go looking for. I hate it when I get friend requests on MySpace or FB (more often on MS) from people who are obviously just trying to have the most friends and their picture is always slutty.

Basically, LJ pwns them all for the sheer fact it hasn't been a media focused trend like MS or FB.

Oh, and I made a Vox account years ago and I can't remember my username or password. lol The features are okay, but it's no LJ.

LJ User Buyout?
So, Sup has canned most of LJ's staff and sidelined the CEO who bought LJ in the first place. Not so good for LJ.

However, reading the news about this, I was struck by an idea: What if LJ's users all pitched in the funds to buy LJ back from Sup and create a 501(c)3 foundation to run and manage LJ in trust for the benefit of the users? I think that's a great idea.

Therefore, a friend of mine has created the community [info]ljuser_buyout for people who are interested in pursuing such a thing. I reckon if a million or two LJ users each pitched in ten or fifteen bucks, we could pull it off.

Could someone help spread the word through ONTD? I know there will probably be a lot of support for this...

Shit! Must go migrate all of my LJ to one of the clone sites. For those of you running Windows, here's the software you need to do that:

First - back up your LJ with LJ Archive!!!! just in case. You should always have a back up just in case - this is a warning for the novices who don't ;P

Then run LJSec. It will DL all of your posts. You can then use an account on any of the LJ clones (InsaneJournal, JournalFen, CommieJournal - Google "LJ clone" and you'll find lots) and UPLOAD all of your LJ posts to this new account. With LJArchive you can save your journal and comments, but you can't repost the whole thing to a new location. That's what LJSec is for.

And SHIT. How frustrating not to know. Sigh.

That is bullshit.

Where the fuck is all the money from these "paid accounts" and "LJ gifts" going? There's no "paid" option for Facebook or myspace and yet they can resist layoffs. But LiveJournal - which preceded BOTH of those - and has paid features to boot ... is unable to? Even with the additional advertising support for "plus accounts"?

I think it's because LJ isn't doing what the fucking paying customers have WANTED it to do and have insisted on making new user info pages and all of these changes that LJ users DO NOT WANT and so a lot of people have decided to stop paying for the service. I cut off automatic yearly payments recently because there's no reason - as far as I can see - to have one. Back in the day, it meant extra userpics PLUS special layouts that others couldn't have PLUS being able to moderate communities PLUS voice posts ... and now it's not worth the price anymore because (aside from the user pics) you can do pretty much all of that. Especially when they won't even listen to those who do pay.

I am really going to be aggravated if LJ abruptly goes bankrupt and deletes 9 years worth of my LJs.
