It’s no fun being the invisible lesbian [November 6th, 2009 @ 12:31pm]

Too many LGBTs automatically assume ‘straight’ when someone doesn’t fit the stereotypes, denying others a community connection

No one can tell my girlfriend is gay. An example: About two years ago, Jenny and a gay male friend went to San Francisco in June. They were excited to celebrate Pride.

But first they were hungry, so they approached a short gay guy wearing leather.
“Anyplace around here we can get Mexican food?” Jenny asked.

The man looked them up and down and then said with a condescending sigh, “The Mexican neighborhood is a few blocks over. This is the Castro. If you really want to stay in the neighborhood, there will be long waits, because there’s a thing happening called Gay Pride.”

Jenny and her friend stared at him in disbelief.

“I am a lesbian standing with a gay guy in the Castro,” Jenny said to me later. “And even then, no one knows I’m gay.”

Are there any self-identified femmes in this community or just feminine lesbians? Do you feel invisible? How do you handle it? How do you let people know you're a lesbian? Does it bother you to have to make extra effort to let people know you're a lesbian?

An Asian-American Queer Superhero! [October 31st, 2009 @ 5:14pm]

mon_deluge
I'm not really into comic books, but I saw this on my Google Reader and though it was pretty cool.

secret identities superhero contest winner: hush

I apologize that this took so long... At long last, here's the final winner from our Secret Identities Superhero Contest, where readers were asked to submit their own original idea for an Asian American superhero. We would have posted this sooner, but understandably, superstar comic book artist Bernard Chang is a busy man. So without further ado, here is Hush by Juli Martin, as rendered above by Bernard Chang.

HERO DESCRIPTION

Abandoned as a newborn, Jane was adopted from Korea by a wealthy white couple at four months. After unexpectedly having two biological children, Jane's adoptive parents feel they have no use for her, and when she comes out as bisexual at age 13, they kick her out. She is shuffled through the foster care system until aging out, at which point she moves to The Center, a cooperative home for homeless LGBTQ youth. Abandoned so many times, she now calls herself "Jane Doe."

Jane is a queer femme woman, slim build, 20. Her black hair is cut choppy and asymmetrical, streaked with electric blue. Her style is edgy and futuristic, in black, gray and blue.

Corrupt governmental wheeling and dealing put The Center in the hands of multibillionaire Elliot Rush, whose biotech firm GenFX needs secret human testing. Believing the residents of The Center are “throwaway” people - people no one will miss - Rush uses them as human guinea pigs.

GenFX's serum takes prexisting traits in the host and amplifies them to a superhuman level, operating under the theory that if a body has a predisposition towards a certain ability, enhancing that trait will give the individual intuitive control over it. Jane has a keen emotional awareness that allows her to read people, situations, feelings and intentions, so when exposed to the serum, her body reacts by amplifying her existing emotional intelligence. She becomes telepathic, and in addition to being able to read others' minds, she can speak to them in their thoughts and share images or sounds. When experiencing strong emotions, these feelings "radiate," positively or negatively affecting those around her.

Because it is not immediately known what powers are developing within each subject (and how), Jane's telepathy allows her to learn more about Rush's intentions than subjects were supposed to know. Using her abilities, Jane informs the others that Rush plans to destroy them once he has the data he needs. She and the others secretly develop their powers and plan an escape. Their plans are interrupted, however, when Rush, suspicious of Jane, separates her from the others.

While being held by Rush, Jane learns that he has called for armed reinforcements. She pleads with the others to get out and leave her behind, but they refuse. Instead, they risk everything to rescue her, and when the battle is over, Jane feels claimed and protected for the first time. From that moment on, her commitment to the others and ensuring their safety is solidified.

Rush manages to escape the fighting, but not without sustaining severe burns in the process, and slips into a coma. When he awakes, he has been disenfranchised by his company and insane from a virus in his skin grafts which ate away the logic and reason portions of his brain. Engraged, he begins to assemble a crew of bio-engineered villains to seek revenge and destroy all who inhibit his rise to power.

Optimistically, they're aiming for a Spring 2011 release. To learn more about the anthology, visit the Secret Identities website here.

now I'd love to see a female queer superhero who doesnt easily conform to mainstream standards of beauty...like a more full-figured character

Aren't they a few decades apart in age? Page's last role was Juno, so this is a little bit of a mindfuck for me.

An excuse to talk about the L word [August 20th, 2009 @ 6:54pm]

mon_deluge

Interview with Mia Kirshner

Who killed Jenny Schecter? A mere five months ago, that was the burning question on lesbian lips in living rooms and local bars from Los Angeles to Little Falls, New Jersey.

Mia Kirshner (Miss Conception, The Black Dahlia, 24) — the astonishing actor who played Jenny, and managed to find the humanity in a character known for uttering, "Adele, the appliqué on the back of your jeans was declared an abomination by the Geneva Convention," and other psychotic bon mots — is in fact a thoughtful woman who'd rather spend time with her friends than bask in the spotlight of Hollywood.

After a record six years as Showtime's longest running original series, The L Word finally ended in March, putting our love-to-hate relationship with Jenny Schecter to rest, not to mention relieving us of those annoying alliterations.

What many people don't know is, all that time, Mia was also focused on humanitarian issues, and in October, 2008, she published her first book, I Live Here, a collection of "visually stunning" narratives told through journals, stories and images, by refugees and displaced people from around the world.

The normally press-shy actress talked to AfterEllen.com and opened up about working on The L Word, her reaction when she found out Jenny was dead, and furthering her efforts for I Live Here with an upcoming fundraiser that will include L Word cast members Jennifer Beals, Laurel Holloman and Rose Rollins.

Rest of the interview (which is fucking long) is at the Source

The last episode season of the L word was trash, y/n? Regardless, I dearly miss it and South of Nowhere was a huge fucking let down. I was really into it in the beginning, but then when they pushed back the final season...I just lost interest. Any good lesbian TV anyone can recommend? I have Verizon FIOS at my disposal.

New mod, so hopefully posts will follow?
So.....have you listened to the new Tiësto song featuring Tegan and Sara? What do you think?

"The first collaboration took place a year ago or so with T&S. If you recall, he remixed their "Back In Your Head." This time time they feel someone deep in their bones. As far as the he said/she said, he gave them a track, they wrote lyrics and vocal lines for it, he finished it up in his Holland studio. The artists are pretty stoked about the results. As Sara puts it:

Tegan and I would happily disband if Tiësto let us tour the world with him. I'd take dance lessons and would be open to discussions about wearing "outfits" on stage. We're proud of the collaboration and can't wait for people to hear the song!"

Slight change of plans [August 18th, 2009 @ 5:10pm]

mon_deluge
Unfortunately [info]bigbadbutch88  had to step down, but I'll still be here. During the few days [info]bigbadbutch88 and I collaborated, we wanted to change the community a bit.

It's not going to become a hookup free for all, but we wanted to change [info]ontd_lesbians  to become a place to not only post articles of the lesbian persuasion, but also become a place of discussion and hopefully lead to a little bit of a community.

So please, feel free to post anything (relevant to the theme of the community, of course) along the lines of celeb gossip, recent events around the world and in your every day life. :)

If you have any suggestions/comments for revamping this place and/or making it more active. Pleasseeee message or comment me.

:)

Lindsay and Sam over?? [October 13th, 2008 @ 11:53pm]

rockonokay

Okay, a couple HON Gossip sources have claimed exclusively to us that there is indeed problems in both relationships!! Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson have been debating whether to break-up since their trip to Mexico... Meanwhile, other sources claim Avril Lavigne's marriage to Sum 41 rocker, Deryck Whibley may be ending due to their recent separation caused by her world tour...

Problems

Our first sources says this about Lindsay & Sam,

"They have been bickering on a daily basis, and Sam can't take Lindsay's partying/drinking ways. Sam also feels smothered by Lindsay and the paparazzi - Their recent trip was meant to fix things and get away from it all, but it didn't fix anything!!"

As for what our other source had to say about Avril & Deryck,

"They have been growing apart for months - Deryck isn't motivated anymore in his life and has resorted to partying and flirting with other girls. They both have grown apart since she left on her world tour... They even stopped calling each other for a few days!!"

Oh man - Why can't everyone just get along?? I guess it's just that time of the year again!!

LGBT on TV. [x-posted] [September 29th, 2008 @ 12:35pm]

ouverte
With the new fall television season comes GLAAD’s 13th annual survey of character diversity, “Where We Are on TV.”

The good news: This season brings more LGBT characters to TV than ever before. Quoting the study: “The overall number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on the broadcast networks will more than double this year after a three-year slump.”

Let us pause for a moment of bright-eyed optimism.  )
