Who is REALLY the special one?

This month's FourFourTwo came with a pull-out debating the 20 greatest managers in British football.
I figured it was pretty interesting so... here's the Top 10! (Because I'm a lazy arse and can't be bothered to type out all the stuff...)

There are two pages on each of them so I'm not going to type it all up but they're being judged on:
Success. Man Management. Strategy. Tactics. Team Building. Genius.
If you want to read it all - go buy FourFourTwo because Barry Fuller is in it and if you live somewhere cruel who doesn't understand footballing needs... you can have mine when I'm done! :p

10. Bill Nicholson
Tottenham Hotspur 1 League Title, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Cup Winners' Cup.

"If you don't have to drag yourself off the field exhausted after 90 minutes, you can't claim to have done your best."

9. Arsene Wenger
Arsenal 3 League Titles, 4 FA Cups

Photobucket

"I think in England you eat too much sugar and meat and not enough vegetables."
(I have no idea why they picked that particular quote either...)

8. Herbert Chapman
Arsenal 2 League Titles, 1 FA Cup

Photobucket

"The most opportune time for scoring is immediately after repelling an attack."

7. Bill Shankly
Liverpool 3 League Titles, 1 Division Two Title, 2 FA Cups, 1 UEFA Cup

Photobucket

"A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe you are the best and then make sure that you are."

6. Brian Clough
Nottingham Forest 1 League Title, 4 League Cups, 2 European Cups

Photobucket

"Rome wasn't built in a day. But I wasn't on that particular job."

5. Sir Alf Ramsey
Ipswich Town 1 Division Three (south) Title, 1 Division Two Title, 1 League Title
England 1 World Cup

Photobucket

"Never change a winning team."

4. Sir Matt Busby
Manchester United 5 League Titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 European Cup

Photobucket

"If you don't put them in, you can't know what you've got."

3. Jock Stein
Celtic 10 Scottish League Titles, 8 Scottish Cups, 6 Scottish League Cups, 1 European Cup

Photobucket

"I think it is important to win a match, but I think what is even more important is the manner in which you win."

2. Bob Paisley
Liverpool 6 League Titles, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 3 European Cups

Photobucket

"I keep reminding players that when you're in a fog, you must stick together. Then you don't get lost."

1. Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United 11 League Titles, 3 League Cups, 5 FA Cups, 1 Cup Winners' Cup, 1 FIFA World Club Cup, 2 Champions League Titles

Photobucket

"My greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch. And you can print that."

I think the quotes are pretty revealing about their characters, no?

Ok, feel free to argue about this amongst yourselves. I'm going to give FourFourTwo a call and ask where Mark Stimson is.

Sort-of-sauce
as the article isn't actually on the website...

Jock Stein will always be #1 in my heart. And Shankly #2. But objectively I understand why SAF is first on this list.

Also I agree about the quotes. Stein's is perfect. SAF's makes me rage but then I don't like him. I respect him, but don't like him.

Heh, I remember my dad telling me about him one Christmas (I have no idea why...) and he was ticking off all these reasons why he was the best manager we've seen. I can't remember what they were but, to be fair, it was a few years ago and I have the memory of a small goldfish :)

I can't really say because I've only seen Wenger and SAF do their thing so my opinion would be very biased. I've read about Busby, Clough, Shankly and Paisley who were all fantastic managers in their own right.

That's the thing, isn't it? But I thought it was kind of interesting - even if it was just to see what we've missed out on ;)
And then it makes you wonder if we'll see managers better than them one day...

Arguing would be really hard as I´ve seen a grand total of two of these managers do their job, but it isn´t a bad list at all.

"I think in England you eat too much sugar and meat and not enough vegetables."
(I have no idea why they picked that particular quote either...)

I´m guessing they picked this one because he changed the eating habits when he went to England, actually created some sort of diet for the players etc.

Ohai you. Have I told you lately how awesome you are? <3

I agree so hard with number one. No-one is better than Fergie. If you say otherwise, you're biased and wrong. :)
