Hey everyone! Thoughts on the new season? Love it or Hate it? Favorite Character so far?

I...like it. I wasn't super into the Mia plot, but I enjoyed seeing the Smithdale kids and the minor niners! I was bummed about Emma basically ruining the chances of us seeing any new roommates (besides Kelly, who, let's face it, is just there to be hooked up with). That girl Gweneth looked so cute!

The new kids were adorable, and reminded me of how Emma and the gang were when the show first started! I'm sort of sick of the folks in between though (Peter, Sav, Lakehurst people besides Jane), I just wish they'd start over again!

My favorite characters so far were Claire and KC! I hope that they will be a normal couple like Spinner and Jane, I'm sick of the draaama!

Miriam McDonald is the face of Degrassi: The Next Generation. She started acting on the show when she was barely a teenager - taking on the heavy role of Spike's daughter, Emma - and she acted as a bridge between the original Degrassi and its new iteration. Now it seems as if it's time to pass the torch again, and as McDonald's character heads off to college, we may have to start prepping to say goodbye to one of Degrassi's most noted alumni. We chatted with McDonald, who's now residing in Los Angeles.

So are you shooting down in Los Angeles? Why the move?

Well, my manager and my agent are down here, so I figured it was time to make the move. There are so many more opportunities, more auditions, and so many more people to meet down here. Obviously, in L.A. the entertainment industry is tops. This is the place to be, and now that I'm 21 and completely independent, it was time to make the move.

You're 21? Somehow you seemed older to me.

A lot of people tell me that. [laughs]

More maturity, I guess?

Yeah, I don't know. I've had a lot of responsibility for a long time, so I guess you kind of grow up fast when that happens.

You're kind of the figurehead for 'Degrassi: TNG'. Emma has been the central character for some time. What's it like playing such an important part of a legacy?

Well, I look at the show as an ensemble. That's what the show's about, this collection of characters. It was really exciting to get the part of Emma, because she was part of the Degrassi history. It was really interesting to look back and see her progression. It gave me a lot of clues into her personality type - what her mother was like, what her father was like - and the type of life she must have had. How often do you get such a breakdown for a character? Most actors have to create from nothing, but I had all these pointers as to how I would want to play Emma. I feel really fortunate to be part of such a successful show.

Think back to when you were first cast as Emma. What did that feel like at the time?

Degrassi was my first real professional acting job. It was the most exciting thing of my life. At that point I knew that everything was going to change. I was going to leave my hometown, leave my friends, and start doing something I'd always dreamed of doing. It was absolutely thrilling for me.

How old were you when you were cast?

I was 13. It was at the end of eighth grade. I remember because I missed my Grade 8 graduation, and I couldn't tell any of my friends why. We weren't allowed to say we were officially cast yet. I was the mysterious disappearing girl!

Do you have any favourite episodes that you've done? I know it's a tough question, since you've done some 120-odd episodes.

Oh my God…that's so tough. I guess I'll answer that in terms of what was the most fun for me. I think I'd have to say it was one of the Kevin Smith-directed episodes - the A-story was about Paige and Alex, and the B-story was about Emma and Peter. That one was just a lot of fun, and you get to go to a premiere and that sort of thing. We got to dress up and do something a little different.

That was in season 5?

Yes...I think so. Wait. Are we in season 8 right now?

I think you are.

That's craziness. It doesn't seem like it was three years ago, but I guess it was.

I'm more blown away by the fact that you were 13 when you started. And now you're 21.

Seriously, I don't think about it that way until someone points it out to me. I actually grew up on television. That's pretty insane. I was this skinny little girl who had no clue about anything when I started on that show. Now I'm grown up.

You're 21, you can drink down there.

I'm 21, and I can do anything! I've got my car; I could drive to Mexico if I wanted to.

Now your character is in college, are you approaching your portrayal of Emma any differently?

Yeah, definitely. Before I always had to make sure I didn't play her too old, since I'm actually two years older than Emma. Like I said, everybody says I'm mature for my age, and I know Emma is also supposed to be put-together most of the time, mature, stuff like that. But now that she's in college, I feel the freedom to let her grow up a little bit more, which is really nice for me, just to be able to take some more risk and liberties. In a way it kind of feels like a new show, with all these new characters and new set and everything - at least as far as the university storyline goes.

I just watched the two-part season premiere. You weren't really in it that much, so I'm wondering, are you going to be phased out as the season progresses, and as you get older?

They haven't told us in so many words, but Degrassi has always been a show that revolves around high school. It's sort of nice that they're showing where the characters are going, which is what they did last year with Adamo's and Lauren's characters. But Degrassi is a high school show, and I think that's always going to be the focal point.

So will the viewer see a lot of you this season, or will there be only a little bit of focus?

There's going to be a balance, as there has been in previous seasons, but of course, the high school life will be the main focus of the season.

Emma's been through more than any other character, arguably. What was the hardest episode for you to film? Was it the van one [where Emma becomes promiscuous and engages in sex acts in a van]? The shooting one [where a fellow student is shot]? There's so many things that poor Emma's gone through…

I know. That's hard. The van episode was definitely one of the hardest for me to film, because it totally took me out of my comfort zone. As a girl in high school, it was tough to be on TV talking about these things that people don't want to be talking about. When I was younger, and a lot of my peers were younger, it was harder for them to differentiate between myself and my character. The day after that aired, I was nervous walking through the corridors, knowing those kids had just watched what had happened. You have to keep a level head and say 'This is my job and it's not me. It's my character.'

OK, I've got a weird question for you. I hear your nickname is Billy. How did that come to be?

My nickname has been Billy since I was about 5 years old. I don't remember how it happened exactly, but my sister gave it to me. We were just joking around about something and then it kind of stuck. At home with my family, they never call me Miriam, unless they're screaming at me. I'm always Billy, and there's not really a good explanation for it. [laughs]

First week and the school is abuzz. Who's that new principal? Can Degrassi play football? And who looks best in the new ~~Spirit~~ Power Squad uniforms? (Answer: moi.) Other subjects being discussed? Is that Danny Van Zandt or Michael Jackson circa 1984? (When he was actually cute, btw) Oh, and why does Darcy's little sister look like an extra from a Harry Potter movie? Or am I off... comments? Thoughts?

Of course the topic du jour is that Model Mania has hit the halls. Mama Mia's chances are looking good but what other Degrassi-lettes are runway material? This is what The Anti-Grapevine is hearing:

1. Holly J Sinclair — Pretty sure all the emails came from the same email account (but don't tell her I told you that – girl scares me).

2. Alli Bhandari — Sav's little sister has made quite the impression in her first week. Big brother asked me to make it clear he’ll pummel anyone who makes a move. So anyone not wanting to take a lashing from Spaghetti Arms: you've been warned.

3. Moi — Flattering but I'm really more of a behind-the-scenes girl.

My personal choice for a Degrassi model? Bruce the Moose. Behind that big bully hides a luv machine. Remember kiddies, all shapes and sizes are beautiful!

And did anyone catch Clare singing in the caf? My ears are still bleeding. Whoever knows what 'song' that was, please, illuminate, so I never ever have to hear it again. Also, thoughts on the new niner boys? The kid with the skateboard’s got cute-tential but a little too fresh-out-of-the-cradle for me. Connor... I'm not sure. Seems like an odd duck. What's your diagnosis on that one?

FYI, I’m working on Smithdale contacts to get the goods on your favorite alums. So far, I’ve heard Degrassi’s golden girl, Emma Nelson, has been sulking her way all over campus. Which makes no sense whatsoever because her new roommate, Kelly (the boy kind of Kelly), could pass for grown Brangelina spawn. . Unless you’re not into the ultra-sensitive granola type with the "I'm into outdoor sports" body. For the record? I am. So if there’s any of you out there reading: find me – if you can.

Mia's shocking 'huge mistake'

When high school drama "Degrassi" returns with an all new season this Sunday, teenage single mother Mia Jones (Nina Dobrev) is willing to do anything to land her first big modelling job.

However, according to Executive Producer Sara Snow, "Mia makes a huge mistake and pays for it."

The shocking decision is at the centre of the two-part season premiere, "Uptown Girl," and reveals a whole new side of Mia that Degrassi viewers have never seen before.

"We show characters making real mistakes, just like regular people do -- and that's why people fall in love with them, because you also see these characters learning from their mistakes," says Snow.

Changes in store

Season eight of Degrassi will introduce several new characters into the mix, including a group of gifted students nicknamed the "brainiac niners," and a mischievous new principal known as "The Shep."

And as new characters enter the halls of Degrassi Community School, Emma (Miriam McDonald), Manny (Cassie Steele) and Liberty (Sarah Barrable-Tishauer) move on to the world of Smithdale University and experience all the ups and downs of life in residence.

Snow says that while some of the older characters have moved on to higher education, the series will still mainly focus on life in high school.

"Degrassi the school is the heart of the series, with life at Smithdale taking up a third of the stories. The rest will be at Degrassi, though there will be times when they will be woven together," says Snow.

"Because we've introduced cool new characters to fill out the show, we now have three pools to pluck stories from, including the "upperclassmen" of Degrassi (like Mia), and can look at all their different experiences."

Snow also promises more surprising and twists this season, including:

* The Anti-Grapevine (an online blog written by someone at Degrassi)
* The return of several beloved characters from the past
* A new take on the issue of homosexuality
* Characters dealing with mental disabilities
* A four-part special event featuring director Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (known best for their roles in Smith's films as "Jay and Silent Bob")

Where's Darcy?

When actress Shenae Grimes landed a new starring role in the remake of "Beverly Hills 90210," it left many Degrassi fans wondering what would happen with her character, Darcy Edwards.

Snow confirms that Darcy will appear in season eight, with her departure from the series explained in the third episode.

The executive producer also says they have left the door open for Darcy's possible return, and will continue to reference her during the upcoming season.

Season Eight- Episode Synopsis (801 - 812)

Episode 801“Uptown Girl”, Part One
Relieved of parental duty for the year by mom, Mia starts the school year off with a bang by bonding with new girl, Leia, and getting scouted to be the new face of football star Tom Blakes’ shoe line. Mia wants to get this job. But just how far will she go to get it? All the way to Tom’s bed perhaps? But she’s not that type of girl. Or is she?

When Emma and Manny are assigned different rooms at the Smithdale dorm, Emma’s horrified. After spending hours negotiating with the housing department to get them reassigned, Manny and Liberty are not as excited as Emma had hoped. And mystery roommate Kelly adds something new to the mix. Will rooming together bring these girls back together or push them even further apart?

Episode 802“Uptown Girl”, Part Two
Mia does what she can to ensure her success. Besides, Tom is handsome and famous, so Mia thinks being with Tom to get ahead isn’t such a bad trade. But she’s having difficulty balancing school, beginning a relationship with Danny, and going to wild parties with Tom at night. But all that doesn’t matter because Mia wins the coveted job! But at the big photo shoot, she learns a shocking truth -- the decision was made entirely without Tom’s input. Now, she’s a bona fide model, but at what cost? Is this new glamourous path worth losing her new friend, a great boyfriend, and her self-respect?

As we get better acquainted with the gifted class we see the relationships come together between Connor and Clare. Clare says she doesn’t care what people think but when new boy K.C. shows obvious interest, she begins to care what K.C. thinks!

Episode 803“Fight The Power”
Jane wants to play football but since there is no girls team, then boys’ football it is. The Shep doesn’t like the idea one bit, but once Jane proves she’s faster, stronger, and more athletic than most of the team, he relents… with a warning: she’ll be treated like every other player. The guys on the team razz Jane, but she deflects their jabs playfully, determined to be a part of the team. During the final moments of Degrassi’s first-ever football game, Jane is not protected by her team, gets hit, fumbles the ball and costs them the win. Jane weathers the relentless harassment to stick with the team, but when an altercation between Jane and Derek turns violent, Jane finds herself on the losing end of the fight. What’s worse, The Shep chalks it up to boys being boys. Jane must decide if playing a sport she loves is worth the constant struggle against this entrenched misogyny. Jane knows she can play football with the best, but can she win the hearts and minds of her teammates in this battle to belong?

Episode 804“Didn't We Almost Have It All”
Eager to make the most of her college experience, Liberty jumps at the chance to rush the most popular sorority at Smithdale. Determined to get in, Liberty slowly exchanges old habits and old friends (Manny and Emma) for sorority approved ones. Despite a new look and a posse of supportive rushees, Liberty lets loose and the sisters love it. But where will all this behavior take her? Front of the school paper. Liberty worries she’ll be cut. Turns out, she had nothing to worry about; the sorority needs a token minority. Now what will she do?

Back at Degrassi, Holly J enters this year with an aggressive “to do list”: rule the school as student council President, take the Power Squad to the city finals and get the grades that will get her into a top university. When she assumes she’s the only virgin on the Power Squad, she adds “lose her virginity’ to the list. And who will be the lucky young man?

Episode 805“Man With Two Hearts”
Peter begins a relationship with Mia and a friendship with Riley. Finding a balance between a new girlfriend and a new guy friend gets confusing, especially when Riley is suddenly kissing Peter. Riley immediately runs off, leaving Peter really confused about their friendship. Peter struggles to understand. Did he encourage Riley? And when he confronts him with what happened, will the truth bring his friend closer, or only drive them further away?

Meanwhile, while working on a project with Connor at Simpson’s house, Clare and Alli find a vibrator under Mr. S’s bed! Caught off guard by Spike’s arrival, the sex toy ends up in Clare’s bag. Trouble really strikes when Connor accidentally sets off the vibrator in class and Mr. Armstrong confiscates it. Clare’s mom, now scandalized, is called to the school, and is horribly embarrassed by The Shep. Despite being totally humiliated, the incident forces Clare to challenge her parents on their don’t ask/don’t tell approach to sexuality.

Episode 806
“With or Without You”
Sav and Anya plan to celebrate their six-month anniversary on the school’s overnight trip. Only problem? Alli, Sav’s sister, convinces their parents to let her go on the trip on the condition that Sav spend every second with her. Forced to choose between his girlfriend and family responsibility, what’s a guy to do? Compromise. Trouble is, can Sav trust his sister to behave? All signs point to no when Alli is anointed with the nickname “Backwoods” Bhandari. Sav is furious. How could she do that to their family? Alli is furious back. How could he believe those rumors? And more importantly, how can Sav make out with Anya and be upset if Alli does the same? Alli accuses Sav of having some serious double standards. And Anya knows it too!

Over at Smithdale, both Manny and Emma are crushing on their roommate, Kelly. The two girls know they can’t compete over the same guy. They’ve been down that road before. They are older and wiser now. They know their friendship is too valuable to risk over a guy. Isn’t it?

Episode 807“Money For Nothing”
Mia’s T-Bombz campaign is hitting the city, and Degrassi. But Holly J has bigger and better things going on. She’s prepping the Power Squad for an out-of-town competition, and things are looking good. Her crush, Blue, has even asked her out! Holly J has all her ducks in line, until, she learns her parents in real financial turmoil so no more rides to school. Also, from now on, brown bag lunches, and no more trips to the mall. Desperate to keep up her top dog appearance and appease her financial crisis, Holly J spills her guts to Spinner in order to land a job at The Dot (despite her atrocious waitressing skills). Hurt by her family’s struggle, Holly J lashes out at Mia and plans to destroy her new glam status. Mia’s secret about Tom has landed in Holly J’s hands, and she’s thinking of sharing it with the world.

Things are close to perfect for Peter who is happily enjoying the band, Mia, and his pad. Until, Ms. Hatzilakos unexpectedly drops in for a visit. She’ll be staying with Peter for a bit while she’s in town. Peter quickly discovers that his life isn’t so rad with mom around. She’s treating Peter like a kid, when he feels he’s becoming a responsible adult. What does Peter need to do to show his mom he’s grown up?

Episode 808“Lost in Love”, Part One
Spinner and Jane have plans for next year – she’ll start pre-law and he’ll attend police college. When he doesn’t get in, he can’t bear to tell her, so he lies. Jane catches him and starts to wonder if her future includes him.

Clare gets invited to the dance by K.C. AND Connor. When it looks like their struggle for her attention will jeopardize Robot Wars, she decides to go with neither.

Kelly and Emma finally admit they have feelings for each other and agree to go out on a date.

Episode 809“Lost in Love”, Part Two
Desperate to win Jane back, Spinner sneaks into the Leadership Convention Jane is speaking at and proposes. When Jane turns him down, Spinner breaks up with her – nothing he does is ever good enough. But soon Jane realizes she needs Spinner in her life. Will she be able to win him back?

Clare agrees to go to the dance with Connor to avoid hurting his feelings. But when she shares a dance with K.C., the person she really wanted to go with, she hurts Connor anyway.

Kelly nearly loses Emma before he’s even got her! What will he have to do to prove his feelings for her?

Episode 810“Bad Medicine”
Riley’s the star of Degrassi’s first ever football game win! Shep is floored at how much Riley’s improved. Things seem like they can’t get any better for Riley, except for the fact that he’s keeping some serious secrets. Not only is he repressing the fact that he’s gay, Riley is also using anabolic steroids. He uses them and girls to complete his “real man” image but when his social life leaves him unsatisfied, he is driven to take more steroids as an “antidote” to his gayness. With the steroids’ side effects ramping up – Riley begins to lose his temper and acts out at school. Will he be able to maintain this straight jock persona he’s created? Or will his efforts to be someone else lead him to crash into his true self and hurt the people he cares about?

Danny and Derek both have it bad for Leia, but how will that affect their friendship.

On the-n.com's podcast with Cassie Steele she talks about how she lost a lot of weight in L.A. because she exercised and went to the beach all the time.
She had to take out a lot of her piercings because they're "scary to kids".
She has a boyfriend in LA.
She lives in a condo in West Hollywood but doesn't like LA and likes the beach much better so she wants to buy a boat.
She loves San Diego.
She has nipple rings.
Her name is Cassandra Rae Steele.
She said she's gaining weight because she's visiting back at home and she gained 10 pounds after eating the first dinner there.
She said her cd is coming out next year around Febuary because the song Summer Nights is "not gonna fly".
Oh and Manny will have a new love interest with "authority". I'm thinking maybe teacher? TA? RA?
