General Thoughts ( will be updated as and when they come to me today)
I'll start with the United Kingdom of Stuff first.

ENTER A BLOODY DECENT SONG!!!

We can, and do, moan all we like about block voting but have conveniently forgot the following :

1 - Our song had NO appeal at all. It appealed to the Irish (well in so far as it was 3rd best) and it was the 5th best in the opinion of 8 people in a room in San Marino - hardly the basis of a hoo-har campaign is it?

2 - WOGAN saved this song himself - and then has the gaul to say "it's all political"

3 - It entered the charts at number SIXTY-SEVEN, If it had appeal then surely our own public would buy it?

4 - The UK Press have conveniently forgotten that we gave 12 points to CYPRUS in the Semi and 10 to Turkey and 12 to Greece in the Final - and we stand and shout about other Diasporas when ours is working just fine thanks!

Andy couldn't even win X Factor, which people forget as well and now we get Cheryl Baker in the Mirror claiming we should pull out... WHY?! - Has she not looked at the results in the last fifteen years?

( Just to remind you - they would be 10=,8,1,2,12,16,15,3,26,16,22,19,22 and officially 25)

So its not a new phenom that we have been crap in the last few years, with 5 exceptions we have been outside the top ten for the last FIFTEEN!!

Don’t you think it's about time we realised that it is the song that still makes a difference and that we really REALLY do need to start entering things that are... and here is a controversial statement, GOOD?! When we do, we have come in the top 3 - when we don't, we're poor..

GRRR @ British Press.

You're right, Nick. This year, Wogan proved beyond all reasonable doubt that he is a git, plain and simple. His comments to the BBC yesterday were bitter and mean-spirited. Even if I'd been in the UK for Eurovision this year, I would have watched it on the web rather than listen to his inane whingeing.

Now, as for the UK song: do we know who at the BBC gets to choose the songs for the UK selection? If this year's E:YD songs were truly the best on offer, then it's a very sad commentary on the perception of Eurovision among UK songwriters. If not, then how did the better songs not make it to E:YD?

BBC need to review their selection process

If, like me, you live in the UK, you've seen the pathetic attempts to pick a Eurovision winner over the past few years using a program thats about 15yrs out of date and having judges on there who know little about Eurovision (I could do a damn sight better job).

What the BBC need to do is to create some kind of 'X-Factor' style program that starts in November, attracts songs from all of the country performed by artists who are keen to represent UK and have talent. We could have 12 weeks of competitions, 8 groups/acts/soloists on each programme and each week 2 are put through to the semi finals in February, with a grand final in March. It would yield massive viewing and also allow us the UK public to decide from the outset, not after some plonker has given us the option of 6 SH*TE songs to choose from. Unfortunately Andy's song was the best of a bad bunch and with draw number 2 in the final, he was doomed from the outset.
As regards to Mr Wogan, its about time he hung up his Eurovision boots because, like our songs, they're still in the 90's and this contest has moved on. He use to make the contest for us viewers but I cannot stand listening to him any more so wish him a very happy immediate retirement and the BBC can save £150,000 on his fees!!
Finally, I must say congratulations to Russia for winning. Yes, you have many friendly neighbours but you have to admit they have entered some damn good songs over the past 5 years and rightly deserve a victory.
I'm sure the EBU will make a few more changes next year but as far as I'm concerned, the 2 semi-finals worked very well.
Roll on May 2009.
Steve

In my opinion, Russia deserved more to win in past years than they did this year.

Create an internal song competition in the UK

I'm often amazed at how countries as small (in population terms) as those that previously made up Yugoslavia, can, collectively wield so much voting power. Here are the stats:

Former Yugoslavia countries:

Population
Slovenia 2.0 million
Croatia 4.5 million
Serbia 10.5 million
Bosnia-Herzegovina 4.5 million
FYR Macedonia 2.0 million

Now compare this to the countries of the UK:

England 51 million
Wales 3 million
Scotland 5 million
Northern Ireland 2 million

Why can't the individual countries of the UK enter a song each? This would create an exciting internal competition (the Welsh, especially, would love it)and, if they abandoned automatic qualifying by the Big 4 (which many say is on the cards), we'd stand a chance that something from the UK would end up in the final.
