Community Profile

There are tons of Jewish LJs and tons of queer LJs. I figured it's about time we merge the two, for those of us whose identities include both. This is for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, or asexual. It's also for people who like any of the above or think we're cool!

The goal of this community is to provide a peaceful, safe place for LGBTIQQA Jews and the people who love them to network, form friendships, and find other people with similar experiences.

There are only a couple basic requirements for being in this group. They aren't that hard to follow, and violations of these guidelines will be taken seriously:

1) Respect the identities of all of your fellow members. In other words, don't join if you're anti-Semitic, homophobic, biphobic, transphobic, etc. etc.

2) No personal attacking or flaming. The moderator understands that debates can get heated, but when one starts name-calling and slandering another person is when someone will step in.

3) Please respect different forms of Jewish practice or lack thereof. We understand the differences and inherent rifts between different sects of Judaism and they will certainly present themselves in debate. But if you have resentful comments against another sect of Judaism, please endeavor to keep it to yourself.

4) one_in_a_minyan accepts every level of Jewish practice, or lack thereof, and criticizing others' level of 'Jewishness' is discouraged. Also, no matter what your personal opinion may be, do not tell someone they are not Jewish unless they explicitly ask for a halachic view. Pluralism and diversity of religious practice are parts of the beauty of our community. We know that there are various ways of interpreting and practising Judaism, and while you may think that your branch is The Right One, please work from the basis that all interpretations are valid.

5) Please use an LJ cut tag for exceedingly long posts.

6) Please respect different views on the Israel/Palestine conflict. This community has a moratorium on discussion of this subject. Posts pertaining to Israel/Palestine are allowed only if they address a specifically queer topic, but discussion regarding issues between these political entities is strictly prohibited until further notice. For example, one is allowed to post information concerning an upcoming Queer/Israel event (e.g. World Pride), but it isn't necessary for the next 20 comments to bash Israel in response. The same goes for the other side of the argument. If you absolutely must continue the discussion, ask an individual if you may contact them directly.

7) No piggy-backing. That is, if the same argument has already happened in a recent post, there is no need to repeat it. Self-regulation is the key here.

Postings violating these community guidelines will result in:
*a preliminary warning upon the first offense, followed by
*the banning of the member upon the next offense.
The moderator reserves the right to delete postings that violate community guidelines, according to his own discretion.


Please note that in none of the above requirements does it say that you must be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, asexual OR Jewish to join this community! All you have to be is respectful, and interested in discussing issues of being queer and/or Jewish.
