getting ready for winter

we waited until the end of nov last year to get him a snow suit, and by then it was too late and we couldnt find anything. we got a separate jacket/snow bib set from target, (i will post pics later i am out on the lap top)

so i spent about an hour on the phone today calling the local target stores to find dino snow pants, and got nothing.
it was so frustrating, the kept putting me on hold and i would get disconnected.
we have navy blue ones and were going to exchange them..

so i think we are going to just end up keeping what we have..

Barack 'Osama' on Rensselaer County ballots
Election officials on both sides of aisle insist error on absentee ballots was a typo

By BOB GARDINIER, Staff writer

TROY — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's last name is spelled "Osama" on hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters in Rensselaer County.

The misspelling, which elections officials on both sides of the aisle insist was simply a typo, is causing embarrassment for the county.

''No question this is an honest mistake innocently done,'' said Edward McDonough, the Democratic commissioner. ''We catch almost everything.''

''This was a typo,'' said Republican Commissioner Larry Bugbee. ''We have three different staff members who proof these things and somehow the typo got by us.''

Officials say the flawed ballots were sent to approximately 300 voters. On row 1A Barack Obama's name is spelled Barack Osama.

Is it a Freudian slip, intentional act or a mistake? Voters are sure to have opinions, and one pol pointed out that the letters 's' and 'b' are not exactly keyboard neighbors.

But even the county Democratic election commissioner is apologizing for what he calls a terrible mistake.

McDonough said the absentee ballots went out to voters in Brunswick, Nassau, Sand Lake, Schaghticoke and Schodack with the error.

So far three people have called to point it out, he said. Those people will get new ballots sent to them.

One Sand Lake resident who caught the misspelling, and who asked to remain anonymous, was skeptical.

''It's a little suspicious and at least grossly incompetent,'' the voter said. "If I crossed out the name and wrote in the right spelling my ballot would be invalid."

come on over to the light side of the force

Christopher Buckley endorses Obama

Saying "sorry, dad, I'm voting for Obama," Christopher Buckley announces today at The Daily Beast that he is supporting Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's bid for the White House.

Buckley is son of the late conservative icon William F. Buckley, and is a noted writer, humorist and conservative thinker as well.

Of the Republican nominee, Buckley writes:

This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget "by the end of my first term." Who, really, believes that? Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis. His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?

Of Obama, he says that:

Having a first-class temperament and a first-class intellect, President Obama will (I pray, secularly) surely understand that traditional left-politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit we've dug for ourselves. If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr.

Obama has in him -- I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy "We are the people we have been waiting for" silly rhetoric -- the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for

the choice

At a moment of economic calamity, international perplexity, political failure, and battered morale, America needs both uplift and realism, both change and steadiness. It needs a leader temperamentally, intellectually, and emotionally attuned to the complexities of our troubled globe. That leader’s name is Barack Obama. )

mon-king.. mon king

we were going out the other day and monkie keeps climbing in the car. he always wants to be in there.
so he was in there when i buckled jaxen in and then i tossed him out.
so i got into the driver seat and jaxen kept saying monkie (monking) over and over again.
so i looked in the back of the view and on the other side of jaxen, no cat. so we started out
and jeani asked why he was saying it. i said i did not know, because i JUST looked.
we got to the end of the driveway and monkie leaps out of nowhere onto jeanis shoulder. LOL
jaxen grinned and said with satisfaction "monking"
LOL
i have NO idea where he was hiding.

from laundry to a menu ... to a master's degree in 2012

It's good to force myself to stay home and get work done around the house. Housework isn't fun. Folding laundry isn't fun. But I feel good afterward -- and I catch up on a lot of recorded TV shows. And I don't spend money or use gas -- and lately that always feels awesome.

I was staying home anyway, and then I heard about a chance for a last-minute editing job, but nothing has come of it. They said it would most likely be in the morning. Now it's 1. Eh.

In an hour, I have to go get the kids and do a quick trip to the grocery store for green beans. Tonight we are having company -- menu is pork tenderloin with honey teryaki on the grill, scalloped potatoes, roasted green beans with garlic and pine nuts, and a blueberry cake with vanilla ice cream. And I am sure some wine.

ETA: Read more... )

But my husband is working like a dog lately. He didn't get much sleep last night, and he says he's not drinking tonight so he can stay awake for our guests, and tomorrow, he has more work to do. It's not just the crazy market -- he's also writing a report on gold. Of course, he has to update that day to day, and cross his fingers that whatever the finished product says doesn't dramatically change a day after its sent to subscribers. I don't envy him his stress level. I hate to support his working crazy hours, but I also don't want to make him feel like crap about doing so.

As to getting to grad school and pursuing economics as a field: I need to be able to get a *good* job for myself. For challenging my own brain and being able to be independent, just in case. But also it would be helpful to him to not be the primary breadwinner. I doubt I'll ever make the type of income he's been doing the past few years -- and heck we don't know if he'll be able to continue to make such a good income. Writers/reporters/editors don't typically make insanely good money.

I found out there are THREE math classes I have to take. Argh. I wish I'd done some of these a couple years ago, but I guess then I would have forgotten it all. Read more... )

So assuming I graduate in 2012... I'll be 45 with a master's. Better late than never. I never could decide what to go to grad school for.

OK, time to vacuum...

*************************

Oh, and I finally got the car magnets and buttons frmo the Obama campaign. I canceled the yard sign and bumper sticker part of the order. Less than 4 weeks to the election!

Huh.

Yeah, clucky as hell. I think what bothers me most is not that I can't have a baby right now, it's not that the time isn't right... it's that I feel like it's not "me" to want a baby in the first place. Not that I can't see myself doing it. Not that there aren't a million things I like about the idea (and, I'll grant willingly, quite a few I'm still iffy about). It's that because I've never explored the idea before, I feel like people are going to look at me like I'm crazy if we decide to have a kid or kids. Like they're going to feel like I'm not the same friend/sister/etc. as I was before because of that choice.

And I'm not sure if that's crazy or dead on.

Yesterday morning was one of my favorite types of mornings. It was cold and foggy.
It was so foggy you couldn't see down the street.
When I went to get on the bridge to cross into Indiana it looked like I was taking a ramp into the clouds, I couldn't see one bit of the bridge. It was all gone by about 10am but it's just a beautiful way to start the day. It reminds me of home.

no different than the last 2 elections

States’ Actions to Block Voters Appear Illegal

“Just as voting machines were the major issue that came out of the 2000 presidential election and provisional ballots were the big issue from 2004, voter registration and these statewide lists will be the top concern this year,” said Daniel P. Tokaji, a law professor at Ohio State University. )
