I found this randomly while doing a search for some Marilyn Monroe images, and I thought some of you might enjoy seeing it:

This is the display at the Criterion Theatre in Oklahoma for the release of the 1953 film Niagara. Isn't it something?

It made me wish movies still came out like that, with that kind of grandiose fanfare about them, you know? Now we just get inundated with previews and billboards, but I love this festive, creative, sort of celebratory way they had of promoting a movie during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood.

*sigh*

To My American Friends: DVDR Recording Assistance? [15 Jul 2008|01:37pm]

silentsgirl
One of the few things I miss about living in the US is that I don't get to have access to the great titles that TCM offers on a regular basis.  TCM UK is a lot like AMC in the States (which is to say, extremely disappointing).  I had a DVR in the States, and a DVD-Recorder, so these titles that have not yet been released on DVD could be added to my disk collection until there was a legitimate release on DVD (if there ever WOULD be such a thing for some of these more eclectic titles).

Kay Francis will be the Star of the Month in September, and Carole Lombard will be so honored in October.  I love both these ladies immensely, and would love to get some of the titles that are being premiered if anyone would be willing to assist with recording.  I will, of course, refund postage or, if I'm seeing you in Muskegon, you can hand off the Francis items then (and, oh yikes, Jean Arthur!).  There are a lot of titles here, but I'm cross-posting all over the place so that I'm reaching out to many, many folks (I'll be keeping a chart so that there's no overlap).  Here's what I'm seeking:

September 3 (actually VERY early on September 4)
The Dark Horse (it's not Kay Francis, but it IS Warren William, and I missed it at one of the film events a few years ago)

September 4
Raffles
One Way Passage
Divorce
Women are Like That
Comet Over Broadway
I Loved a Woman

September 5
Living on Velvet
If You Could Only Cook
Adventure in Manhattan
More than a Secretary

September 11
Small Town Girl
Cynara
Notorious Affair
Feminine Touch
Street of Women
Give Me Your Heart
Stolen Holiday
Mary Stevens, MD
Passion Flower
Goose and the Gander
House on 56th Street

September 16
Lady By Choice

September 18
Transgression
Women in the Wind
King of the Underworld
It's a Date
Play Girl

September 19
The Keyhole

September 22
One Way Passage (Second Opportunity to Record this)

September 25
Mandalay
Doctor Monica
Always in my Heart
Stranded
Storm at Daybreak

September 26
Allotment Wives

October 6, 2008

October 13, 2008

Hancock//Hitchcock [08 Jul 2008|11:57am]

[ mood | content ]

This made me laugh. My boyfriend and I went to see Hancock the other night. First of all, it is SUCH a good movie and I totally suggest going to see it! But anyway, as we were walking in the theatre this little boy was with his Dad and he goes "Look Dad there's that Hitchcock movie!" I thought I was going to die laughing. I so wanted to be like "Sorry kid, that's a little before your time."

any resemblance? i think not...

Beauty and the Beast [22 Jun 2008|12:27pm]

[ mood | artistic ]

I saw this version of the movie a few weeks ago... forgot to post about it though.
Without looking up any info on it, it was made around 1947 by the French. Wonderful people the French are with films, lemme tell you. Anyone who hasn't seen this version of this fabled story DEFINITELY needs to watch it, if not for the story line, then most definitely for the special effects. Now, as you know, during that particular day and age, special effects weren't what they are now. They had to get REALLY friggin creative back then. Nowadays it's all computers, which is cool sometimes, but I prefer older styles. It tends to look way more realistic, like in the original versions of Star Wars. Ole' George did a spectacular job with the originals, but the newer ones are a little less believable in my opinion because of them seeming less realistic... too much CGI for my taste.
But I digress. They did a fabulous job with the makeup for the Beast in this movie. He had on this big furry headpiece, teeth, fuzzy hands, the works. And it looked really good. There's a part in the movie where Belle feeds Beast water from her hand, and he drinks it... beautiful scene, but I was paying attention to the fact that all the fur was still intact after being wetted.

There's also a scene at the end of the movie where Beast takes Belle and they fly off to the castle, and they way they film it makes it look as though they did the reverse filming, like what they did in The Wizard of Oz to film the tornado scene... drop the actors, instead of the house, film it, they play it back in reverse to make it look as though they're flying away. That's my theory of what they did in this movie. Anyway, it's so nice because it's so seamless with the effects. There's a few other cool scenes that they made in this movie, but I'd suggest everyone just go out and watch it sometime. When I watched it, they were showing it on one of those obscure movie channels on DirectTV (can't remember which one now). They were having an all night French film festival. Good stuff.

Take care!
