I saw this version of the movie a few weeks ago... forgot to post about it though. Without looking up any info on it, it was made around 1947 by the French. Wonderful people the French are with films, lemme tell you. Anyone who hasn't seen this version of this fabled story DEFINITELY needs to watch it, if not for the story line, then most definitely for the special effects. Now, as you know, during that particular day and age, special effects weren't what they are now. They had to get REALLY friggin creative back then. Nowadays it's all computers, which is cool sometimes, but I prefer older styles. It tends to look way more realistic, like in the original versions of Star Wars. Ole' George did a spectacular job with the originals, but the newer ones are a little less believable in my opinion because of them seeming less realistic... too much CGI for my taste. But I digress. They did a fabulous job with the makeup for the Beast in this movie. He had on this big furry headpiece, teeth, fuzzy hands, the works. And it looked really good. There's a part in the movie where Belle feeds Beast water from her hand, and he drinks it... beautiful scene, but I was paying attention to the fact that all the fur was still intact after being wetted.
There's also a scene at the end of the movie where Beast takes Belle and they fly off to the castle, and they way they film it makes it look as though they did the reverse filming, like what they did in The Wizard of Oz to film the tornado scene... drop the actors, instead of the house, film it, they play it back in reverse to make it look as though they're flying away. That's my theory of what they did in this movie. Anyway, it's so nice because it's so seamless with the effects. There's a few other cool scenes that they made in this movie, but I'd suggest everyone just go out and watch it sometime. When I watched it, they were showing it on one of those obscure movie channels on DirectTV (can't remember which one now). They were having an all night French film festival. Good stuff.
Take care!
