WILL SMITH DOESN'T LIKE TEACHERS

Will Smith says he and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are homeschooling their children because he doesn't believe in teachers and feels the most valuable things he learned in life he didn't get from school. He tells Reader's Digest:

"The date of the Boston Tea Party does not matter. I know how to learn anything I want to learn. I absolutely know that I could learn how to fly the space shuttle because someone else knows how to fly it, and they put it in a book. Give me the book, and I do not need somebody to stand up in front of the class."

i think will smith will always be so damn hot, no matter how old he gets. i understand what he's saying, it's kind of cool and logical to have that standpoint. but my kids are still going to school.

i think if you're a kid in hollywood you really need school to get that social factor, but that's just me. =)

dude, elementary - high school isn't about learning calculus. it's about dealing with other kids and having friendships.

I love Will I just met him in NY on Sunday. There was 30 people crowding him and ordering him around to take pictures and he was just so calm and happy to have those fans. It was crazy how nice the guy is. He was shooting a movie called I Am Legend and he said its kind of sci fi.

I think many times people see school simply as an academic institution, but it also helps children develop in other areas, such as social interaction. This would be particularily important for children of celebrities, in my opinion, who may already feel excluded from their peers because of the life they were born into.

On the other hand, I can see, and somewhat agree, with what Will Smith is saying. I had a lot of poor teachers growing up, but there were always those 2 or 3 who I believe changed my life for the better.

Homeschooling has its merits, but I think Will Smith will just have to be careful that his children are still up to the proper educational standards, and are where they should be academically for their ages. Many times children fall behind while being homeschooled.

iawtc. & it's not like will smith couldn't afford to send his kids to the best private school with the best teachers to eliminate the chance of his kids having bad teachers.

More times than not, nothing good comes from teachers. I've maybe had a couple decent teachers before, but most of them aren't any good. That quote is kind of dumb sounding though, but I guess I could agree with the whole point.

I get what he's saying but that's curriculum, not teachers. Not saying that all teachers are great but I certainly appreciate those that work hard and get paid shit to educate the public.

I like that idea. I mean it just gives him more time to spend with his kids, when spending time with his kids is very rare in his career. Although, I do hope the kids still become well adjusted to society. Meaning, I hope they interact publicly.

When they say "homeschooling" are they teaching the children themselves or just handing them books and letting them learn what they want? Because if it is (a) then his argument makes no sense, as he is then being, in effect, the teacher - and if it is (b) how on earth will that work? What if they don't "want" to learn to read? Or add?

I know that is not what he means, necessarily, but that's what it sounds like in the quote and it's stupid.

I want to see his kid learn to read WITHOUT a teacher. Regardless of WHO the teacher is, SOMEONE takes the role of teacher. Teacher does not equate person who stands in front of the classroom, but a person who guides and helps someone to learn.

There are plenty of aspects to teaching, besides the material, that a layman cannot possibly know without the training. I say that as the wife of an ESOL (English as a second or other language) teacher who's had to take over 700 hours of training to do his job (that's not counting his college degree and certification classes).

Expecting everyone to pick up a book and teach themselves also disregards non-traditional learners and those with learning disabilities (not meaning developmentally disabled persons, but those with aural association problems, etc.). Plenty of intelligent people cannot learn only from a book.

WORD. I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, and I cannot learn by reading. I've got to write out what I need to learn (more than once, if I really want it to stick) AND have someone physically tell me what's going on.
It sucks :/

I think homeschooling is ridiculous, sorry. Kids need to learn to react and socialise around other kids and adults.
Why doesn't he look into alternative schools? Like The Waldorf method? I am anti-school a bit (more so anti-public school) so I looked around and found good fits for my kids (like Waldorf and bilingual education)

I agree with him; I couldn't read when I was 8, due to dyslexia, and no teacher would help me so I ended up teaching myself, same with all subjects, basically, except art.
School is just a giant, public paid, baby-sitting building anyways
