Pete Doherty is to leave rehab in the next 48 hours as supermodel girlfriend Kate Moss finally agrees to become his wife. The singer - who has waged a long-running battle against drug addiction - is to be discharged from the Priory clinic in Southgate, North London. And multi-millionairess Kate is so impressed with Pete's commitment to staying clean, she has said "yes" to his latest marriage proposal.
The pair are now likely to wed "within weeks" in a small ceremony - with Kate's mother Linda the only guest. The 27-year-old Babyshambles singer told staff at the rehab clinic that Kate had accepted his proposal during her visit last Wednesday. Pete - looking far healthier than he has in years after putting on more than a stone - proposed while they were strolling through the grounds of the clinic.
A Priory source revealed: "Pete had been looking like the cat who had got the cream after Kate's visit. Then he told some of the staff that he had proposed to Kate and she had said yes. He said they wanted to tie the knot as soon as possible. He told a staff member, 'We will run away together to somewhere where no one can find us and then we'll get married'.
Pete also dismissed rumours he had been due to marry Kate - who last week signed a £3million deal to design for Top Shop - in the summer. "He said all the gossip about him and Kate getting wed in Ibiza wasn't true," said the source.
The former Libertines star will play his first concert after leaving rehab in Carlow, south-east Ireland, tomorrow. He will then play concerts in Dublin and Belfast over the next two evenings.
But he has a three-night break before his next concert in Birmingham next Sunday - allowing the lovers a 72-hour break in which they could tie the knot. Pete now has a new manager, Adrian Hunter, and is "determined to maintain his progress in his personal life", according to friends. He is also planning a big London concert next month to celebrate his health improvements. This is likely to take place at the Koko venue in Camden, North London - where Madonna and Christina Aguilera have recently launched albums.
The source added: "From the moment Pete came into the clinic, he accepted he was addicted to drugs like heroin and crack. He knew he had a problem. "Often when drug addicts first come into the clinic they are in denial and have to learn to accept they've got a problem.
"In counselling sessions he has said things that show he knows what he needs to do - stop taking drugs and seek help as soon as feels the urge to do so. "Kate has been so impressed with that attitude. She has always loved him but just needed him to straighten up. Now there's nothing to stop them marrying."
