FINAL FANTASY 13 POST


Even despite some controversy, Final Fantasy XIII is selling well.

Square Enix sent word today that the RPG has sold more than a million units in North America, in the five days following its March 9 launch. This makes it set the record for the best first-week sales in Final Fantasy history, which is no small feat considering the pedigree.

The name still carries a lot of weight, even as the game is facing some negative feedback based on its departure from the traditional tropes of Japanese RPGs.



The news comes on the heels of last week's announcement that the company had shipped 3 million units to North America and Europe alone, helping the series as a whole cross 96 million units. The game is still readily available in stores and Square is shipping to retailers, so we should see a strong showing in the March NPD data.

We may even find a tight race between it and PS3-exclusive God of War 3 for the month's top seller.

IDK how I feel about 13 yet as imo the no towns and no traditional level up system has really gutted my enjoyment for the game and also that it takes you nearly god knows how many hours to slog through a five or six chapter tutorial until it FINALLY opens up and lets you do something even remotely traditional. And I am not liking how you upgrade your weapons and can only equip accessories and no armor or head pieces and so on.

I really want to like this game but so far am very jaded and is anyone else still finding the panagram system and the fact you only get control over lightning really completely frustrating and a shit move on Square's part ?

I LOVE it, i love the fact you can decide which character you want to be leader of the party (aka you get to decide which character you want to play), that you gan change between those different panagrams in a fight and are not bound to have only one player being a healer or sthg like that~, the graphics surely are awesome, the battle system all in all rocks. The characters are entertaining~ so much to love *_*

I am sad because I find FFXIII boring and annoying, yet I wanted to love it so hard. Especially after waiting for years :( I need to be consoled :''''(

Then I moved onto the Dragon Age expansion and that sucked.

Oh I liked playing it. It was enjoyable. I did like Nathaniel because he was so connected to the story and felt, idk, relevant. He was nice too.

But I despised the new conversation system. I want to be able to talk to my dudes like I did before. I barely cared for any of them by the end.

Also, I suspect that I would have loved it a lot more if I hadn't imported my character. It feels like nothing I did really mattered, and the only links between what I spent a zillion hours doing in DA:O were 10 seconds of Alistair, 5 seconds where Oghren recognizes you before pretty much forgetting we were bffs before, and 2 seconds of Wynne. No one references shit you've done, like, you know, saving all their dumb asses.

I think I would have preferred it better if the import function weren't for your character but more for our choices/items if they weren't gonna bother with making it a true expansion for your imported toon. Like, "Oh, the Warden who saved all of us for no gd reason apparently is busy in court/traveling/doing whatever. He/She sends this stuff though, thinks it might be useful." That way you eliminate the need to have any cameos or many references aside from basic shit because it's some random dude who just came in. With the imported character it just feels pointless and falls really flat, especially when you're coming from a game where you made friendships/romances and really got to know your party. So it seems strange that when they show up for 2 seconds they suddenly don't care about you or have just disappeared off the face of the earth.

Plus, the ending was so abrupt and anti-climactic, and then your character disappears a few years later? WTF? None of these bitches care the fucking queen (or even the fucking hero who saved the world) disappeared? I better have gotten a divorce from Alistair by that point, because if that jackass isn't looking for me I'll go back and drop him off a cliff lmfao

Haha I snuck on my computer this morning so I could decide if I should buy FFXIII or GoW3 for my boyfriend's birthday. Still stuck. Kind of swaying towards FF but the reviews I'm reading give GOW the slight edge over FF. And because FF doesn't apparently give you much of a NG+ option.

Have you played Demon's Souls? IIRC it's only for the PS3 but my boyfriend and I couldn't stop playing it for months.

It's the best out of the PS era FF games. I think it's even greater than VII. Just everything about IX was what drew me to the FF series in the first place. I've never really been a fan of heavy sci-fi stuff in my FF. Also... Vivi is the best black mage ever ;___;

I'm extremely disappointed in the game. It seems as though they are trying more to appeal to general gamers rather than longtime fans of the series. Plus, I find the characters (except for Snow) to be incredibly annoying. the graphics are gorgeous, though.

That's it exactly, the characters are all annoying to me. Lightning is warming up to me, but there's nothing to engage me so far. I love the graphics as well, but I'm disappointed that I bought it. I think I'm going to do homework instead.

Exactly. I miss the story where I got to know the characters, or felt compelled to know them and what happens to them. I'm like 25 hours in the game and don't really give a damn about any of them (especially since you switch 248284298348249 times!) so combined with the annoying, frustrating battle system I just don't care to keep on playing.

wtf snow is the most annoying imo. but i pretty much agree with you on everything else, it's a big disappointment. it hardly felt like a final fantasy game and everything was a tireless grind.

Really, grind? I thought the game moved along fairly well, there's a save point and a cutscene where we talk about our feelings every four minutes and I filled up my grid completely before the chapter ended going to the destination and killing enemies. I did not have to grind until I got to Gran Pulse where I grinded for like two hours before I maxed our the grid again and then ended up with like 300000 CP when the chapter ended. After that I never grinded again, which uhhh....kind of bit me in Ch. 12 and 13 until I made some paradigm changes. Much better than how I operated in XII, which was the biggest grind fest ever.

Although if you want all the trophies, yeah....then it's grind time.

YES I AGREE. I love how the card and GF system basically breaks the game if you know how to use it right. Before you leave Garden, become nigh unbeatable at Triple Triad, begin converting unneeded (non-character cards) to magic, turn tents to curagas, link to HP, limit break everything with Zell. WIN.

I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure if it's a good game to get into if it's your first experience with FF. They changed a lot of things and despite some complaints about the "auto-battle" easy mode, the fights can be longer than they ought to be and a hassle at times. Maybe give it a rental first?

How far are you into the game?
Auto-battle does not equal easy mode at all in later battles.
I think the battle system is pretty genius and if you know what you are doing and using the right strategies you can get through battles quick (though, not easily.)

This is the only FF battle system I think that utilizes an actual strategy.

I wanted to buy it but I'm glad I waited to read the reviews first. I'm not really into the western RPGs that have gotten so popular recently so I'm disappointed that this isn't a traditional Final Fantasy/JRPG. I guess I'll rent it and see how it is but it may just be the first FF I haven't purchased since the NES days.

Like Oblivion and Fallout 3. They're good games and I did enjoy the experience playing them but I prefer the more traditional Japanese ones.

Anything by Bioware (Dragon Age, Mass Effect) or Bethesda (Fallout 3, Oblivion) will rock your socks. Fable 2 was pretty fun also.

it gets pretty tolerable at the end of the game, but I will never go through the first 8 chapters ever again. they were boring and annoying.

... I tried playing 12, I really, really did. I couldn't do it. The battle system was fucked and the story was drier than melbatoast. I don't have a ps3 so I can't exactly give XIII the chance it should get. I might give it a shot if my bro brings his ps3 over for a week over the summer.

I loved 12's battle system but the story and the main characters were just so boring (Balthier and Fran were enjoyable). I can't play a game on battle system alone.

12 is the absolute worse in the series. It took me almost four years to beat that damn game because I didn't care about the characters and the gambit system sucked so back. Where's the fun in complete automating your characters and not do anything in a battle besides maybe casting Esuna every once in a while?

I hated 12. It felt like a SPORPG (single player offline rpg). What I hated the most was all the lines flying all over the place for the battle system, and the 'hack and slash'ness it seemed to promote.. idk.

And the characters looked 'too real'. Does that make sense?

Sephiroth = Cool loner with killer sword play.

Kefka = Psycho clown with an annoying laugh and horrible clothes.

Golbez > Both of them though.
