Matlin Demands Closed Captioning For “TV Everywhere”

Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin has accused broadcasters, online DVD renters, and other video-content providers of dragging their feet in developing technology that would enable programs broadcast online to be closed captioned. Matlin, who has been deaf since childhood and said she was devastated when she discovered that Netflix's free presentation of the newly restored Wizard of Oz lacked closed captioning when it was streamed on the Internet last October 3, told an FCC hearing in Washington today (Friday) that she was originally told, presumably by Netflix, that the "technology was coming" to enable online closed captioning. However, she said in her prepared remarks, "Eventually I found out that there was actually no problem in the technology. In fact, the technology exists to stream content with closed captions. What it came down to was the same issue I encountered 20 years ago [when she originally demanded that TV broadcasters and manufacturers provide closed captioning] -- a lack of understanding and a lack of will and desire by broadcasters, content providers and equipment manufacturers to provide full access." Matlin concluded by imploring the commission to "ensure that the hard-fought victory we won so many years ago can move forward into the 21st century."

IA. I kinda can't believe it's not everywhere already. (Although incorrect captioning drives me nuts. It's not "Cass," it's "Cas.")

YES! I hate watching TV without closed caption. I'm so happy that Hulu has it for most programs. Except if it's a recently uploaded episode, it doesn't feature CC.

She is 100% right- this should be a non-issue. With the technology that is available, nothing should be uncaptioned. Ridiculous. We've come a long way since external captioning boxes, but we need to come the rest of the way.

I agree with your comment and with Marlee.
My husband is HOH and cannot watch programs/movies without CC.
It's FUCKING UNREAL how many programs are still not captioned.
It's a joke.

I'm glad she's speaking out for this.

And even though I'm not deaf, I always have Closed Captioning on. I've been using it so long, that it's weird without the captions. Plus, it's helpful.

And CC is most hilarious when everything's messed up, so you're sitting there going WTF the entire time.

I just hate when it's behind from what people are saying.

"closed" captioning means that only audiences that specifically choose to watch the captions can watch them.
"open" captioning means that they are burned into the tape and you have to deal with them, whether you like it or not. :P

Whenever I watch TV on CC, I'm always stunned by what a piss poor job they do of it. I don't see why they shouldn't have to put captions on everything, I mean, I can understand if it's a delay with live - but shit, you have that stuff in advanced for like 98% of television

I SECOND THIS. I'm not deaf, but I must have some kind of hearing problem because I can never understand what people are saying in movies and tv unless the closed captioning is on. That's one of the reasons I HATE seeing movies in the theater.

Same here, I'm not deaf either but I hate when you're watching a movie in the theater and a character whispers a long ass dialogue and you're all like "What? What did he say?!" and then you miss a scene and argh! Happens a lot in like suspense movies especially.
