Queen Cheryl Cole is an inspiration to Beyonce.
The young, award-winning London-based designer, David Koma, 25, has become an overnight fashion star after Beyoncé wore one of his sexy, ‘industrial chic’ designs for the MTV awards on Thursday night, hot on the heels of Cheryl Cole, who wore a similar dress on last Saturday’s X Factor.
Cheryl Cole’s body-con dress, featuring a metal-chain spiral staircase snaking across the breasts, which was bought by her styling team from the exclusive London stockist, Browns Focus, in South Molton Street, W1, for £1,900, has already sold out.
The even more sci-fi dress worn by Beyoncé was an exclusive one-off commission, made to order in Koma’s new London studio, which he has just established, in Clerkenwell.
The two singing stars are not the first to have discovered ‘king’ Koma. That distinction belongs to the actress Megan Fox, and Lady Gaga, who have both been seen in his designs.
Koma, who was born in Georgia and grew up in St Petersburg, moved to London several years ago to study at Central St Martins fashion college. He graduated in February this year with an MA and his sculptural, body-conscious collection, in black and flesh-tones, featuring architectural metal and plastic details, carried off the prestigious Harrods Design Award, previously won by Christopher Kane, in 2006.
Koma continued to explore his concept of the powerful, sexually-confident woman with his spring/summer 2010 collection which was shown during London Fashion Week in September and won the Vauxhall Fashion Scout ‘Merit Award’.
This collection, inspired by the Spanish Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi, combines the arts and crafts themes of the Modernist Style of art nouveau with Koma’s own strong signatures. It will go on sale in Browns Focus in February.
Koma, meanwhile, who cites the designers Pierre Cardin, Thierry Mugler and Geoffrey Beene as influences upon his work, has already started designing his autumn/winter 2010/11 collection which he hopes will prove powerful enough to win his sponsorship in London Fashion Week’s NewGen scheme. sponsored by Topshop.
