The Redemption: An interview with singer-songwriter Brooke Hogan
Brooke Hogan who rose to fame for being the daughter of famous wrestler Hulk Hogan has truly come into her own with the release of her latest album, The Redemption. With a hit TV show, Brooke Knows Best, the talented singer-songwriter is proving that she has what it takes to succeed in the music business and is staking her claim in the music world.
Her new single, “Hey Yo” features Grammy nominated Kon Live Distribution/Interscope recording artist Colby O’Donis who has worked with Akon and Lady GaGa. Hogan says of The Redemption, “It’s about my image and it’s about my life story as it’s unfolding.” The album features deeply introspective lyrics that talk about everything from the relationship with her mother to how her life is unfolding, and the overall message is one of hope, and that ‘no matter how bad things are you can always come out on top.’
Brooke Hogan took time out of her schedule to talk with Examiner about her new project, the recording process, and her plans for the immediate future.
Katrina-Kasey Wheeler: Tell me about your new album, The Redemption. The project is very introspective and personal. What was your inspiration?
Brooke Hogan: I modeled it after Pink’s M!ssundaztood album. When I was younger and that album was released I really connected with it because I was kind of going through the same thing with my family. I wanted the layout, mood and vibe to be the same on this new album. This album is different from my last also because the last album was taken over by Scott Storch. He dictated what writers and what songs were included on the project. The Redemption is like my baby. I wrote the songs and created it all on my own.
KW: Did you have a specific sound that you were aiming for on this project?
BH: My main goal was to find underground producers – people that were really hungry, and really wanted to work. I worked with producer Mizzle and Surefire Music Group, and they came with really futuristic sounds, and I found my niche. I knew it when I heard it.
KW: It must have been great to have creative license to make the music you needed to make, and to have such a large role in writing the songs.
BH: I actually wrote most of the songs by myself. I hate to say it, but I wanted to be hardheaded. I didn’t want anyone to help me. I wanted to do it myself. I didn’t want anyone’s heart or words or feelings to be on this album. I wanted them to be my songs. I wanted it to be really honest.
KW: You have said that you wanted this project to really show who you are. Do you feel you achieved that?
BH: I think I did. I think I need one hundred more songs. I think I just touched the tip of the iceberg this time.
KW: you worked with some great collaborators like Flo Rida and Colby O’ Donis who are certified hit-makers.
BH: We could have worked with so many other people as well. I really chose to work with the people who were down to earth and wanted to work hard, as I did. I wanted to create music and work from the bottom up and wanted to be around people who felt the same way.
KW: The artwork for the album is very different from anything out there. There is an ethereal quality to it.
BH: It was done by a family friend; Gary Smith who used to do all of my dad’s wrestling boots. I called him up and told him that I wanted the art to look very heavenly. I didn’t want an airbrushed look. I was going after a specific vision I had in mind.
KW: Do you feel that because your father is famous it has been that much harder for you to prove yourself as a serious artist?
BH: It was harder. Everyone thinks that it was easier – and in a way it was both hard and easy. It was easy because having a famous father opened a lot of doors. But once I got through those doors, people wanted me to prove myself even more – so in that sense it was hard. People hated me just because I got the break – so I had more people against me than for me.
KW: Do you plan to tour with this album?
BH: I will definitely be touring in Europe, and doing some shows in the U.S.
KW: Given the success of your TV show, would you ever be interested in acting in films, or is music the only thing on your mind at this time?
BH: I have had a lot of offers. I don’t want to push my luck right now. I am really happy to focus on my music. If the right opportunity came up, I would probably try it. I would definitely try my best.
The Redemption will be available starting July 21 through SoBe Entertainment.
