Former Hole Guitarist Says the Band Doesn't Exist Without Him.

Remember when Courtney Love said she's turning the material for her latest solo album into a new version of Hole? Well, the band's co-founder and ex-guitarist, Eric Erlandson, heard about it and doesn't seem very amused, saying, in his opinion, Hole doesn't exist without him.

While that may sound like artistic ego, Erlandson says it all comes down to business. "We have a contract," Erlandson said in an interview with Spin. "She signed a contract with me when we decided to break up the band, which was like 2002 or something, so I really don't have comment on it except that I know my part in that band. The way I look at it, there is no Hole without me. To put it blunt. Just on a business level."

Naturally, Erlandson takes the whole thing with a grain of salt because, well, Love's no stranger to verbal spouting. "Somebody told me and it just sounds like something -- it just sounds like the usual," he said. "I love her a lot and I wish her the best, and I'm open to discussions regarding the real Hole, and if she has a solo album together, I think that's great. I think she should finish it and put it out and do that."

The album, 'Nobody's Daughter,' features English guitarist Micko Larkin, songwriting from Linda Perry and production by Michael Beinhorn, as well as former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur on backing vocals. The album is supposed to come out next year, but between Courtney's financial problems and recent health issues, it's anybody's guess when it'll see the light of day.

source.

I've always wished that Hole would get back together and put out something decent and not like that Hole-goes-pop train wreck Celebrity Skin bullshit. idc what anyone says about Courtney Love...she's talented when she tries.

Yeah, I adore it. I actually love Celebrity Skin and feel it's unfairly reviled. The only bum track is "Northern Star" and I like that enough, too. I know the album is much more pop than the other stuff, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. There are plenty of dark tracks on it anyway

Interesting. I think the only great track on the album is Northern Star.

I think for me it just wasn't Hole. Had it been an album by someone else I might have loved it.

idk. I actually played the entire thing in my car the other day while road trippin' and I don't hate it as much as I did when it came out and I was a crazy die hard Hole fan..but I still don't think it's that great.

It's Hole. There's no "for me it's" about it. It's Hole. Hole wrote it, Hole recorded it, Hole released it and did the videos. It is Hole.

Not liking it is one thing, which I am not sure how you could not, but opinions/assholes/etc. However, it is still the last original Hole record released. Bands evolve, they change shape and sound. That is the mark of good artistry. The same people who wrote "Garbadge Man" wrote "Celebrity Skin" (with few exceptions, like Corgan) and that's artistic maturity. You can't write about things from Pretty on the Inside forever or you turn out like Veruca Salt.

IA with this completely. I've noticed, though, that a lot of fans of many bands don't want their artists to change. They don't like evolution. If it was good on one album, why not make ten more albums of the same stuff? Hole had this backlash just like bands/artists like AFI, Chris Cornell, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, etc. I have never understood this attitude, but it is prevalent. People forget that first and foremost, these bands/singers are artists and they are most likely going to want to experiment with their craft. They aren't necessarily making their music to please other people, but themselves first. If a "fan" is so upset that they feel that a band should make the music that THEY want them to make then I say they aren't a good fan to begin with. Just my opinion.

Personally, I love to see a good evolution. I want my artists to experiment and stretch in their abilities. Try new technology and sounds. Try writing different kinds of songs. That is what helps to innovate sound and push music forward in a new direction.

IA, totally.

I understand that people fall in love with bands because of a certain emotion or connection, but you should want your favorite bands to experiment and do what feels right for them. Making records isnt about making the fans happy, its about expressing your artistry. Prince, being my favorite of all time, has released some terrible records in my opinion, but I have never ever wished he'd stop experimenting.

I think I'll always have a soft spot for Hole. :D Haven't listened to them for so long though. I feel like breaking out 'Live Through This' now.

What are everyone's favourite Hole songs? I love Old Age, Asking for It & Turpentine.

The real Courtney Love is 1/2 Lois Maffeo, people. She started recording under that name years before this slut stole it.

I MEAN ITS NOT EVEN TRUE, the band was made in 1990. she had been running around w/ that name prior to 1990. cmon. Hate on her for being a strung out slag, not because some unknown band ripped off her name

Their first 7" was released in 1990. Courtney Love formed in 1987, and they played a shit ton of gigs in the late eighties. I have a live recording from 1988 when they played with Beat Happening.

Then you, as a dutiful Courtney Love Band fan, should go edit Lois' wiki page cuz it's wrong according to you.

And regardless, Courtney Love was using the name Courtney Love prior to 1987, as well.

In sixth grade I did a presentation where I said Courtney Love was my idol or person I look up to or something, LOL.

Anyway does anyone know when OOOM is going to come out? That's what I really care about right now

I also got sent home early the same year for a *rumor* that I had pierced my tongue in the bathroom with a safety pin.
I'm from a tiny town outside of Pittsburgh that's full of old people.

iasm about courtney. "live through this" was the ~soundtrack to my life~ when i was 13 and borrowed it off my dad, and i'm still impressed with it to this day. it just makes me sad to see her crumble into basically nothing of substance.

I would have liked to listen to Courtney and Hole if I hadn't read in "Spin" this quote the bitch gave about yelling at some black people who were at a rock concert (I believe?) and shouting that they didn't belong and that they have their culture and she has hers. Then it went downhill from there. I'm trying to find it to have evidence in case someone asks.

Though even with that I still liked her in "The People VS Larry Flint" ...bitch made me cry.
