Strong Sales Continue for Michael Jackson Albums


Michael Jackson’s run on the charts is not over. Billboard reported that more than 110,000 copies of his albums were sold on Monday and Tuesday, the first two days of the sales week for music retailers. That puts him in a position to again dominate the catalog sales chart next week. Based on early data from stores, the most popular title was “Thriller,” with 44,000 copies sold in the United States, followed by “The Essential Michael Jackson” and “Number Ones.” Those albums, in the reverse order, were Mr. Jackson’s most popular last week, when he sold a total of 422,000 albums and 2.3 million single tracks online, breaking several records. Because all of Mr. Jackson’s albums are at least 18 months old, however, they do not qualify for the Billboard 200, the magazine’s standard albums chart.
