While Fantasia really shocked Simon, Clay did not
When American Idol judge, Simon Cowell was told by Extra that former Idol runner-up Clay Aiken was gay he stated, “Wow, that’s a shock. It’s like being told Santa Clause isn’t real, unbelievable.”
Cowell is actually happy for Aiken. He stated, “Good for him. If he said it, it’s the right thing for him, good for him.”
Aiken came out to the public recently about his sexuality because he wanted to do right by his newborn son, Parker. He told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview, “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.”
During a Good Morning America Interview with Diane Sawyer in 2006, Aiken said that he was tired of questions being asked about his sexuality and refused to answer her when she asked him if he was gay.
The birth of his first child has played on Aiken’s conscience and as a father, he wants to do right by his child and laying the rumours to rest about the whole thing is best for their whole family.
In April of this year Aiken told Access Hollywood that he didn’t really think that people cared whether he was gay or straight, but he now acknowledges that the confirmation that he is gay will overwhelm some of his fans.
Cowell however, doesn’t think anyone will care about Aiken’s disclosure.
“I don’t think anyone cares,” he told Extra. “Let’s face it. It’s 2008. You know, who cares?”
