Lil Mama: Misunderstood Fashion Genius?

Lil Mama has long been pummeled for her unusual taste in clothes. It really kicked off when she arrived at the VMA’s last year dressed up like a Precious Moments figurine. She made many worst-dressed lists for that one. And after one over-the-top outfit after another, I have started to notice a pattern. Perhaps Lil Mama is not so much a fashion idiot as she is a fashion idiot savant? If you look look closely, you will see that she knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s trying to remind us all of our youth, particularly the 80’s / early 90’s part. Which is pretty genius, when you consider that she herself wasn’t even born until 1989.







The Inspiration: The Mad Hatter.

The Inspiration: Nellie Olsen. Little House On The Prairie villain is so IN.



The Inspiration: Creepy Dolls. Remember how that doll in your grandma’s house always used to look like it was staring directly into your soul? Lil Mama wants to remind us that she is always watching us. Always.

The Inspiration: The Saved By The Bell Opening Credits.

The Inspiration: The Bedazzler. It’s interesting to note here that Rihanna wore this same dress - except hers didn’t have rhinestones and the phrase “Voice of the Year” on the front. I bet Rihanna felt really jealous when she saw Lil Mama’s bedazzled version!




The Inspiration: What Dreams May Come. OKAY, I realize that this is out of left field....but does it mean anything that one of Lil Mama’s most elegant outfits looks like a painting in Robin William’s version of heaven? Just when you think you’ve got her figured out, she goes and wears a piece such as this. I’m totally expecting Cuba Gooding Jr. to jump out of that dress.

it's the album I discovered her (thanks to the fabulously lush 'Sleeps with butterflies' video), and I listen to it DAILY. That and the Y Kan't Tori read album.

What she is doing is not ~genius~ and shouldn't give her the title of misunderstood fashion genius. Just because she dresses like a certain fictional character doesn't mean she is trying to remind us of youth, it's called inspiration. That takes little to no thought.
