Alice in Chains to finally enter the studio to work on new album next month
ALICE IN CHAINS To Enter Studio In October

ALICE IN CHAINS will enter the studio in October to begin recording its first all-new studio effort since 1995's self-titled third album. According to an online posting by The Baldy — whose job is "to travel the world with ALICE IN CHAINS and send photos, videos and blog entries back to [the webmasters] at AliceInChains.com" — "the guys gathered in a rehearsal studio in North Hollywood for the last few days of July and the first few days of August, and began running through the new material and shaking off the rust. After four days of going through the songs alone, the producer for the upcoming record joined the guys and they spent another three days polishing and spit-shining the songs together. A lot was accomplished in that week, and everyone is eager to move forward."

Before the band begins recording, the guys will head over to Peoria, Arizona to join their good friends DEFTONES at KUPD's End of Summer Scorcher on September 20. After the concert, the band will also spend a few more days in pre-production rehearsals working on material before commencing the actual tracking process.

In a spring 2008 interview with The Pulse of Radio, ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell confirmed that he, bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney and new singer William DuVall have been writing songs for months, but explained that they're not rushing to start recording. "We've been working about the last four months, and there's a good bulk of music and a good body of work so far, and we're having fun, and you know, we're taking our time and trying to figure out where William fits in and where we need to step up, and I have all the confidence in the world in the guys," he said. "The most important thing to me is that we're all together and, you know, it's been a tough and painful experience at times, but it's been very rewarding at the same time."

ALICE IN CHAINS officially regrouped in early 2006 after a 10-year absence with DuVall stepping in for late frontman Layne Staley, who died in 2002.

The group did its own headlining tour in the summer and fall of 2006, followed by a 2007 co-headlining jaunt with VELVET REVOLVER.

My favorite Unplugged tune was Sludge Factory, by a mile. It's just SO fucking different from the studio version, for the better.

cue all the "its not Alice in Chains without Layne" comments..
chances are these people havent heard Duvall sing on any of the songs, etc.
look in a perfect world, I would rather see Layne up there too. But the dude is dead, by his own addiction. talented guy, great singer, great songwriter. but he is dead. The band wants to carry on, and I support them.
How many people said AC/DC wasnt AC/DC without Bon Scott, before hearing the band with Brian Johnson?

it is tough to carry on and replace the original singer. You can replace any other member of the band, but the singer makes the dynamic. but with AIC, there were both Layne/JErry splitting vocal duties. And Duvall does a great job filling in the LAyne parts.

That. I'll always miss Layne but I love all of the AIC guys and I'm thrilled that they're playing together again. William rocks the shit out of the old songs in concert and I look forward to hearing new stuff.

My ex went to go see them last year. I would have seen them if Layne was still alive, just like I wouldn't go and see 'Nirvana' if Grohl and Novoselic pulled something together..

My older brother liked this band back in the 90's. Whenever he mentioned their name I always thought he was saying "Alison Chains" and figured it was some girl singer he was into. Obviously I was way off. lol

Yes DuVall will never be Layne. We know this. But he's fly and his voice is sick. Haters to the fucking left.

I think that the only band that actually couldn't continue if the singer were to die is Megadeth. This is because Dave Mustain IS Megadeth. No Dave, no Megadeth.

Even a band like Queen has finally picked up the pieces and are continuing. Their new guy doesn't have Freddy's chops, but I'm sure the music is going to be of the same caliber as the old stuff.

So, if anyone wants to whine about William replacing Layne, find some where else to do it; AIC obviously doesn't give a shit about you or your opinions and rightly so. There will be enough of us who will buy the new stuff to make them not even miss you. ;D

Layne's singing was very original and his techniques with the intricate minor harmonies and vocal overlays were a huge part of AIC's sound. Jerry will surely play and write the music and his lyrics in the same way, but William doesn't do the same stuff Layne did when he records. So I'm wondering if they will sound completely different. I'm a huge Layne Staley fan and so I doubt I'll follow AIC's new stuff (not too interested in the other members) but I'll give it a listen and see how it goes.

RIP Layne ♥

A band without the singer/frontman(esp. long time frontman) is not the same band. Grr why do they do this?
Jerry is the only substitute.
