Kanye West Gives Back / Whoopi Talks About Being Black

In this next installment of “Choose or Lose,” MTV’s ongoing campaign to bring awareness to young veterans issues, MTV News and Kanye West have teamed up to tell the stories of returning veterans in the powerful documentary “Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming” set to air on Monday, July 28 at 10pm ET/PT.

In this one hour special, Kanye, along with Sway Calloway, give recently returned Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans the surprise of their lives by unexpectedly visiting their homes. Viewers will see first-hand the difficult and often painful challenges young vets face when they return home.

There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks. They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about,” West said. “I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories. I went to their homes to listen and get their firsthand experiences. I wanted to hear their stories.

On behalf of MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation, Sway and Kanye gave each veteran a life changing gift. Debts were paid off, rents were taken care of and tuitions were funded. Make sure to tune in.

That's nice, but I think they'd rather have money.

GOD THANK YOU WHOOPI

i am so fucking SICK of all the backhanded bullshit people try to spout out in attempt to make themselves look progressive

no matter what minority group it is im sick of people enabling and setting the standards INHERENTLY LOWER, then being surprised then someone of a different race, religion, or sexuality isn't completely and totally incapable

it seriously fucking enrages me

can someone summarize what whoopi says? i'm at work. thanks!

nevermind. i forget sometimes i have an office door i can close.

whoopi speaks the truth. i hate, hate, HATE when white people "compliment" me for amazing articulation. and i can't tell you how many times i've been asked "how many children do you have?" what...i'm single, black, and female. so i'm automatically supposed to have kids? *sigh*

You and me both girl! I get that whenever I'm out with a young member of my family, as if it's totally not possible for a young Black female to have young family members that she didn't spawn.

I get the "You speak so well" comment a lot. In fact, my Lit prof told me, "Oh, you read that so well!" as if she thought people my color can't read or do it without some "ghetto twang".

I go to Texas A&M, so I guess I should have expected that. I could swear that Blacks are the smallest minority group there.

You know, now I feel awful. Whenever I have a conversation with someone that's particularly pleasant I tend to comment on peoples articulation, if that's what lead to the enjoyable conversation. I do it with absolutely anyone, even little kids, but now I kind of feel I need to cut that word out because it's not meant to be condescending and I really don't want it coming across that way.

well, i think in your situation, (at least how you explained it) it's a bit different then what i and others have experienced. you said you say it to everyone, which to me means you have a genuine admiration for whatever it was that person (of whatever race) said to you. i'm referring to, oh say for example, when i used to manage a high end retail store (as the only female AND black employee.) and one of my associates would have a problem arise with a customer. obviously, it was my duty to smooth things out and make sure the customer was smiling and happy when they left. i can't tell you how many times i've had white customers smile at me, thank me for my help and say, "wow! you speak so well!" right to my face. as if i was a puppy and they were patting me on the head for not pissing on the carpet. i'm talking about the people who only see the stereotypical black folks on the news that the media perpetrates and leads them to believe that ALL black people are incapable of speaking "well", so to them, it's a special situation that deserves a "compliment" when they do come across a black person who speaks "well".

sorry, didn't meant to go on like that. i just didn't want you to think that what you were doing was wrong or should make you feel bad. :)

Well, okay, see, here's my problem though. I really do say it to everyone. I've got a big fascination with language and words and when I talk to someone that speaks in an especially appealing way I do tend to comment on it because I get a big kick out of it. There's no real easy way to explain that that doesn't sound a whole lot creepier than it really is so I go with complimenting articulation, because I figure that's the closest accurate description. I never realized that's a word that was ever used in a puppy dog fashion, and now every time I say it I'm going to wonder if it's coming across that way. lol, totally ruined my word, bb. :(

But really, thank you. I have no idea how many people I've said that to over the years that took it in the more common way and I hate thinking I gave people that feeling. It's got to be such a mix of embarrassing and enraging. I'll find a new word, it's totally worth the bother.

Ugh, I hate the kid thing. People ask me how my children are doing and I tell them I don't have children and they act shocked. Why is it so strange that there are black women who don't have kids? I also have others blacks that are shocked I don't have kids either.

This makes Kanye awesome.

I agree with Whoopi 100%. I don't know how many times I've hear people tell me that I'm articulate. I went to school and I learned how to read and write like everyone else. So saying "Wow, you're articulate." is not a compliment.

The other thing is saying I'm pretty for a black girl. What's that suppose to mean. Like black people are just ass ugly and I somehow won the genetic lotto. Why can't I be pretty just to be pretty?

that really made me lol! but i totally agree with you. an old buddy of mine admitted to me that i was the first black girl he'd ever been attracted to, and that he and most of his male friends never look at black girls. i asked him, why not. he said he just doesn't find black girls to be pretty. i said, how do you know if they're pretty or not if you don't look at them?
