Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with hepatitis C, her publicist said in a statement Wednesday.

Hepatitis C is a liver disease spread through contact with infected blood. The statement said the disease was revealed during a routine examination and was likely caused by her drug use years ago.

"I've been so fortunate to have learned so much from my past experiences," said Cole. "I am embraced by the love and support of my family and friends; I am committed to my belief in myself and in my abiding faith to meet this challenge with a heartfelt optimism and determination. This is how I intend to deal with this current challenge in my life."

Dr. Graham Woolf, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA/Cedars Sinai Medical Center, said that Cole has had a "terrific response to her medication and is now virus negative."

"This gives her an increased chance of cure," he said. "But, she has also suffered significant side effects from the anti-viral medicine, which is the only FDA authorized treatment for hepatitis C. Her side effects include fatigue, muscle aches and dehydration but she is recovering from these."

Cole, 58, the daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, has sold millions of records over her long career. She is due to release "Still Unforgettable," the follow-up to 1991's Grammy-winning, multiplatinum CD "Unforgettable ... With Love," on which she remade some of her father's classics, in September.

That's really sad.
She's lovely...my parents are a lot older than most parents of people my age, and so I grew up listening to 50s music, Patsy Cline, Bette Midler, and Natalie Cole. Her voice is so smooth.

...Natalie Cole was BORN in the 50s. She didn't really get famous for her music until the 80s/90s.

It's okay..maybe I wasn't clear. I meant that my parents are both going to be 66 in a month, and I'm 26. Because they were so much older, I developed their tastes in music from a very early age. I know Natalie Cole wasn't truly famous for music until the 80s- but my parents were fans of Nat King Cole before Natalie came onto the scene...so they liked Natalie by default. =)

its been happening alot lately,I guess its just being discovered now cause people are finding out WHERE they are getting it from.

I have heard of at least 3 incidents this year. This one is the biggest:

That is crazy. Why would someone even suggest doing this? It scares me just to think about what could happen when I go to the doctor.

my mom died from Hep C from an operation during the time when there were NO disposable needles.

reused needles?! holy crap.
I work in a dental surgery and I am constantly terrified I'm going to get a needle stick injury. I swear I take like 5 minutes to put new needles on the syringes. my boss must hate me.

You're not wrong there! I'm meticulous when it comes to cross-infection control. A few extra minutes doing something vs putting a patient a risk? I'm stating the blatantly obvious, but there's no question which is more important.

My mom too. She was on treatment for it earlier this year, but her body broke out into hives, gained like twenty pounds and she started losing her hair. As a result of the two months of treatment, her thyroid is kaput. She probably has to take medicine for it for the rest of her life.

You really need to go to a doctor and get yourself sorted. The sooner you get treatment the better. Sitting back and acting like it is not a big deal is not going to help you in the long run.

Get help bb. Sooner than later.
