‘ET’ Is Still Cagey About Its Brangelina Twins Story
As Angelina Jolie gets ready to give birth to twins, the actress has checked into a French maternity clinic, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
But “Entertainment Tonight” is still sticking by its story that Ms. Jolie gave birth to twins a month ago.
“ET,” television’s most-watched entertainment newsmagazine, claimed that the actress had given birth on May 30, prompting a flurry of denials and accusations that the program had been duped by an impostor posing as Ms. Jolie’s assistant. Almost a week later, “ET” said that it was actively investigating the matter.
But on television, the program has never acknowledged that it may have erred. At one time, “ET” producers considered addressing the issue on air — but then decided not to. The story became a black eye for “ET,” with many other news outlets and gossip blogs taking note of its apparent mistake.
Without any definitive proof one way or the other, “ET” has been studiously avoiding the matter. A week ago, the newsmagazine showed blurry pictures published in In Touch Weekly that purportedly showed a very pregnant Ms. Jolie outside her home in France. And on Tuesday, an “ET” co-host noted that Ms. Jolie had checked into the maternity clinic, without mentioning its month-old reports that she had already given birth.
Contacted on Tuesday, an “ET” spokeswoman would not say whether a retraction would be broadcast.
