I was gonna put this in the post but had such frustration with my lj cut I left it out...

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM
Rated:PG-13

Asian film buffs have debated the merits of Jackie Chan and Jet Li for years. Now they appear together in a film for the first time, ironically a Hollywood production. Given its Western antecedents, The Forbidden Kingdom is a surprisingly well-paced and satisfying kung-fu adventure that honors its stars and treats their story respectfully.

A very loose adaptation of stories that stretch back to the 16th-century novel Journey to the West, The Forbidden Kingdom concerns a battle between the Jade Warrior (Collin Chou) and the Monkey King (Jet Li), immortal gods and enemies. At the start of the film, Jade has turned Monkey into a stone statue. If he can recover the Monkey King's magic bronze staff, Jade can take control of the world.

The staff has ended up in a pawn shop in Boston's Chinatown. When Jason (Michael Angarano), a kung-fu freak and the victim of local bullies, grabs it, he's transported into China's Middle Kingdom. There, he is befriended by Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), a teacher fond of wine, and Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei), a beautiful musician intent on avenging the death of her parents. They are joined by the Silent Monk (Jet Li) in a journey to the Jade Warrior's mountaintop castle, the only route back to Jason's home.

As he did in the sturdy Hidalgo, screenwriter John Fusco manages to convey the story's epic sweep without losing sight of the characters and their quirks. What's more, his knowledge of Hong Kong cinema results in clever and appropriate references to everything from King Hu's Come Drink with Me to Ronnie Yu's The Bride with White Hair. Director Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little) keeps things moving at a smart pace, makes good use of extraordinary Mainland China locations, and, most important, gets all the actors to perform on the same level of commitment and sincerity. This isn't a dumbed-down, irony-laden knockoff like Chan's The Medallion, nor is it an ostentatious art-house effort like Chen Kaige's The Promise. Instead, The Forbidden Kingdom is an entertaining take on a story that has been told many times before.

In fact, Chan's first real success, Drunken Master, featured a role very much like the teacher he plays here. (The original was performed by action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping's father.) Jet Li has never strayed very far from Silent Monk characters. Yuen Wo Ping directed Drunken Master and worked many times with Li; here he resurrects some of his greatest routines from three decades of movies. For action fans, watching Chan and Li face off for the first time is the equivalent of Astaire and Kelly dueting in Ziegfeld Follies.

Fusco and Minkoff try hard but can't quite work around the fact that The Forbidden Kingdom unfolds in what is for most a disreputable genre. Perhaps too much screen time is devoted to Angarano, a bland lead with few discernible action skills. But the film is really about Chan and Li. They are older now and a little slower, but they are still remarkably talented, and The Forbidden Kingdom is a worthy showcase for them.

The music and cinematography of this makes it look so cheesy.
Wait nevermind. That premise already accomplishes that.

This movie looks so cheesy, but even if it ends up sucking, I will just focus on Bingbing.

Kinda like in Curse Of The Golden Flower, I just concentrated on the costumes and makeup.
