Justmonths ago it was predicted that Mel Gibson's reign in tinsel town wasover, because of a drunken night out that culminated in an anti-Semitictirade. Instead his latest film, Apocalypto, topped box office lists on its official opening weekend, as Emily Bourke reports. EMILY BOURKE: It's been almost six months since Mel Gibson's drunken anti-Semitic outburst in Malibu. TheHollywood icon was pulled over and arrested for drink driving, andshortly after launched into a Tequila-fuelled tirade at police. Theincident sparked international outrage and forced him into a publicapology that was drawn out by American interviewer Diane Sawyer. MELGIBSON: I guess I must've been a little overwrought. So, and that'swhat happens, too much pressure, too much work, you do things that goagainst good judgment. So, a few drinks later and I was in the back ofa police car, wailing. DIANE SAWYER: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Are those anti-Semitic words? MELGIBSON: Oh yeah, absolutely. It sounds horrible, and I'm ashamed ofthat. That came out of my mouth. But I'm not that. That's not who I am,you know. EMILY BOURKE: But it seems Mel Gibson's movie-making flair can still pull a crowd. (Excerpt from Apocalypto) His R-rated, subtitled film Apocalypto is inspired by the demise of the Mayan people of South America, and it grossed $US 15-million last weekend. Nicole Sperling is the Film Business Editor for the American Hollywood Reporter publication. She says the controversy surrounding the film and Gibson didn't augur well for the film's opening weekend. NICOLESPERLING: It was quite a surprise, actually, that it did so well. Noone really knew how the film was going to do because of, first of allit's ultra-violent content, and secondly because of the Mel Gibsonfactor, which, after his very public meltdown that happened lastsummer, it wasn't clear how the public was going to turn out for amovie written and directed by him. EMILY BOURKE: So how can you explain the success of the film? NICOLESPERLING: I think the reason why it did so well was because it wassomething very different. The movie is about, essentially, the downfallof the Mayan civilisation, and it doesn't feature any named actors, andit's something that's very unique and something that not a lot ofmovie-goers have seen in the past. And I think the curiositysurrounding that subject matter, and the curiosity surrounding hisfilm-making, was what brought people to the movies. EMILY BOURKE: The PR campaign in the lead-up to the film's opening was dominated by yet more apologies from Gibson. But Nicole Sperling from Hollywood Reportersays it's clear Gibson, unlike many other scandal-plagued stars, hasbeen able to rise above the humiliating events of last July. NICOLESPERLING: It's kind of proven the fact that he can still open a movie,regardless of whether he has an anti-Semitic rant or not. And the thingwith Mel Gibson is he makes his own movies, he finances his own movies,and he's a self-made entity, so he doesn't really need the help of thestudios until it comes to marketing and releasing the movie. And withthis film he's kind of proven that the studios want to be in the MelGibson business. I think Mel Gibson has been forgiven in the eyes of Hollywood. Nicholas Cage taking a break from acting [12 Dec 2006|01:02am] Nicolas Cage has announced plans to curtail his future acting endeavors in order to pursue interests outside of the realm of Tinseltown. The Oscar winner made the semi-retirement announcement over the weekend at the third annual Bahamas International Film Festival. "I'm thinking about taking more time in between movies," the 42-year-old actor told the Associated Press. "I feel I've made a lot of movies already and I want to start exploring other opportunities that I can apply myself to, whether it's writing or other interests that I may develop." While Cage may be reducing his workload, he was quick to note he's not taking himself out of the Hollywood game completely. The World Trade Center star, who has appeared in more than 55 films over his three-decade career, currently has eight movies in the pipeline including National Treasure II next Christmas. Kelly Clarkson Vandalizes Amy Lee's House With Matt Zane? [12 Dec 2006|01:10am] A video has surfaced on You Tube this weekend that shows Kelly Clarkson riding in the back of a van with known adult filmmaker and singer for Society 1 Matt Zane en route to vandalize Evanescence's lead singer Amy Lee's house. The clip seems to be an excerpt from a reality show entitled "In The Studio" During the teaser Kelly actually throws numerous rolls of toilet paper into the trees and over the house while laughing. It is unclear how Matt Zane and Ms. Clarkson ended up in the van together but even Zane seems surprised when he states "I can't believe American Idols Kelly Clarkson is riding in the back of a van going to commit vandalism!" "Berth" has been confirmed for a Feb. 5 release through Maverick, and will feature a mixture of live footage, documentary content and interviews, as well as a preview of their new album. Actress Gives $1 Million to Arts School [12 Dec 2006|09:11am] [ mood | content ] Jada Pinkett Smith has donated $1 million to the Baltimore School for the Arts, asking that its new theater be dedicated to classmate Tupac Shakur, who was shot and killed in 1996. The 35-year-old actress graduated from the high school in 1989. "It means a lot when you're a teacher and your most famous alumnus comes back to give a donation," said Donald Hicken, head of the school's theater department since its founding in 1980 and Pinkett Smith's former theater teacher. "It really says a lot to the community that the school matters in people's lives." The donation from the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, which is based in Baltimore, will be used for renovation and expansion. The school, which announced the donation Monday, said it will name its new theater for Pinkett Smith. Pinkett Smith is married to Will Smith, who stars in the new movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" with their 8-year-old son, Jaden. The couple had previously given $112,500 to the school. When a $30 million expansion program is finished in the fall of 2007, the school will increase its enrollment from 316 to 375 students. Karen Banfield Evans, executive director of the Smith Family Foundation, and Pinkett Smith's aunt, said the actress was moved by the school's advances since she graduated. Pinkett Smith wanted the theater named for Shakur because of the friendship they developed at the school. The rapper died after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. The actress has appeared in movies such as "Ali," which starred her husband, and "Collateral," and she was the voice of the hippo Gloria in the 2005 animated film "Madagascar." Heroes lovers, here is a mid-season surprise for you: Zach is not gay. An NBC publicist told AfterElton in a phone conversation that Zach "is not gay", that it was something that was "for sure" and "in all certainty." AfterElton contacted NBC for confirmation after being told by Thomas Dekker's management (Dekker plays Zach), the character of Zach is absolutely straight. For those that have followed the show closely and taken even a cursory look at NBC's marketing efforts around the show (which have repeatedly insinuated, implied and led most viewers to believe that the character is gay), this is interesting—and troubling—news. source Dekker's management didn't comment. He's going to be playing what I assume is the Eddie Furlong character in the Terminator spinoff TV show, The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Mikayla Resh, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, was the subject of the biography, written and illustrated by her third-grade classmates two years ago. Her mother, Kimberly Resh, arranged the all-school assembly to thank them. The students were wide-eyed when Aiken, co-founder of the foundation, appeared. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On touring with GUNS N' ROSES: "For me, this whole tour is one gigantic highlight, because I have been trying to establish my name in the eyes of rock fans as a solo artist. I've been playing huge festivals in Europe, and have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to play the arenas in America. GUNS N' ROSES is the perfect opportunity." On his current lineup: "I was fortunate enough to get Bobby Jarzombek and 'Metal' Mike Chlasciak from Rob Halford's band. Also, I have Rob De Luca from the band SPREAD EAGLE. He is a dream to work with and a great bass player." On his next album, "Angel Down": "I don't have a release date for you yet because we are in the midst of signing a new record deal with three of the biggest labels in the world. They are talking to my new manager who is Rick Sales from Sanctuary Artists. Rick is really helping out a lot and we are on the fast track on getting that out in the beginning of 2007." TAMPA, Fla. - Evel Knievel has sued Kanye West, taking issue with a music video in which the rapper takes on the persona of "Evel Kanyevel" and tries to jump a rocket-powered motorcycle over a canyon. Knievel, whose real name is Robert Craig Knievel, filed a lawsuit in federal court in Tampa on Monday claiming infringement on his trademark name and likeness. He also claims the "vulgar and offensive" images depicted in the video damage his reputation. "That video that Kanye West put out is the most worthless piece of crap I've ever seen in my life, and he uses my image to catapult himself on the public," the 68-year-old daredevil said Tuesday. A spokesman for West said the 28-year-old rapper no comment. The lawsuit seeks damages and to halt distribution of the video. In the video for "Touch the Sky," released earlier this year, West dons the familiar Knievel star-studded jumpsuit and jumps a canyon in a vehicle "visually indistinguishable" from the one used by Knievel in his failed attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon in Idaho in 1974, the lawsuit said. The video, which features Pamela Anderson as West's girlfriend, contains "vulgar and offensive sexual images, language and conduct involving `Evel Kanyevel' and women apparently trying to gain his sexual interest," according to the lawsuit. "The guy just went too far using me to promote his filth to the world," said Knievel, who lives in Clearwater and has been in poor health in recent years. "I'm not in any way that kind of a person." The lawsuit also names Roc-A-Fella Records, video director Chris Milk and AOL for distributing it. West was so disappointed at not winning best video for "Touch the Sky" at the MTV Europe Music Awards last month that he crashed the stage when it was presented to Justice and Simian for "We Are Your Friends." In a tirade riddled with expletives, West said he should have won the prize because it "cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it. I was jumping across canyons." Knievel failed spectacularly in the 1974 jump. He was secured inside the cockpit and the Sky-Cycle was fired up. But his parachute opened just as he cleared the ramp. After soaring about 1,000 feet, he wound up landing about 20 feet from the river on the rocky south bank. He sustained only scrapes and bruises. Nicole Comes Out of Hiding [12 Dec 2006|05:24pm] Today, one day after her DUI bust, Nicole Richie emerged from new boyfriend Joel Madden's house in Glendale, Calif., and found a throng of paparazzi waiting for her. She then went back into the home to cover herself in a purple blanket. It didn't take a big blanket. Madden, lead singer of the band Good Charlotte (and ex of Hilary Duff), lives very close to where Richie was busted -- which might explain why she was in the area on the night of her wrong-way freeway ride. Zellweger was talking to one of her assistants about an unnerving encounter with a paparazzo as she arrived in New York to do interviews for her new film about the life of Beatrix Potter, the creator of the classic Peter Rabbit tales. When told to just ignore those photographers, Zellweger acknowledged she tries ''to treat them just like they're merely furniture ... but it's hard when they pop up out of nowhere and start flashing those cameras in your face -- about six inches in front of you!'' The Oscar winner also shared two similar stories that clearly are etched in her mind. ''Not long ago I was in a restaurant and noticed that a woman at the next table was using her cell phone camera to take pictures of Bruce Springsteen's children. Courteney Cox Dishes "Dirt" On "Friends" Reunion [12 Dec 2006|10:03pm] Two-and-a-half years after 52 million people tuned in for the finale of "Friends", the show's fans still want one important question asked… "When is the cast going to get back together?" That's where Access Hollywood's Billy Bush comes in. Billy met with "Friends" star Courteney Cox on the set of her new FX drama "Dirt" and just went for it…with a little promise first. "This will never be asked to you again from Access Hollywood," Billy told Courteney, "This is the end." Certain of what was coming, Courteney smiled before the question began to cross Billy's lips. "Is there any way the Friends cast gets together for a reunion?" Billy asked. Courteney's surprising answer? "I would not be opposed to it," she revealed. Well, in hindsight, maybe the answer wasn't so surprising, considering this group of real life friends love each other. That said, Courteney cautioned Billy not to get too excited. "Lets not make a big deal out of it," she said, "and say, ‘Oh the "Friends" are getting back together.'" "You already opened up the door," Billy countered. Courteney responed, "I'm just saying I'm not opposed to it. Jennifer [Aniston] said she's not opposed to it. When we say ‘reunion'… do a little thanksgiving episode, sure…why not what are we all doing? It sounds fun." Turns out Courteney and her close friend have already spoken about it. ABC security guards noticed the commotion on their monitors and trained their security camera in that direction. The pictures show Richie talking to CHP officers. We're told she admitted that she had taken Vicodin and smoked pot. Richie's attorney, Howard Weitzman, exclusively tells TMZ "This is a difficult time for Nicole but she is prepared to accept whatever responsibility is appropriate. She intends to continue with her career and will deal with any other issues that need to be addressed." Arctic Monkeys Name New Songs [12 Dec 2006|10:47pm] [ music | Shiver - Maxïmo Park ] Arctic Monkeys say they've written six songs for a new album! It's not been decided when they'll see the light of day, but the names of the tracks include: 'D is for Danger', 'Plastic Tramp', 'The Bakery Song', 'Balaclava' and 'This House Is A Circus.' Frontman Alex Turner has said of 'This House Is A Circus': "There's something about it. Maybe it's just new, but it's just exciting. It's got some good rhymes in. This House Is A Circus... berserk as fuck." I suppose it's a place you keep going back to - it could be an actual physical building, I suppose, or a headspace you go into." So there you have it. Monkeymania looks set to continue into 2007, and the Arctics are already taking steps to avoid the pratfalls that befell The Stone Roses et al, with a second album hot on the heels of a stupendously hyped debut. As if things aren’t strange enough, the tragic soap opera that is Jennifer Aniston’s love life has taken added another incredible twist. Stay with me, now. After hanging out with former ‘Friends’ costars, Jen made for Club Citrus with some gal pals for some laughs and what became a few too many Limoncello’s. Jen was first introduced to the high-octane cocktail in Italy by the same guy that sent his pal Danny DeVito to be on “The View” while he was in a state of mild delirium. And what other newly exed celeb happened to be in the same place, slamming a Colt 45 while wearing a too-large-for-his-frame velour sweatsuit? None other than FedEx and his posse, all of whom went nuts when they saw Jen. My sources tell me they spent the rest of the night in a private area, making fun of their exes. When the lights of the club finally came on, the two were seen escaping into the shadows through a back door. Cops call bullshit on Pauly Shore video [12 Dec 2006|11:50pm] The shocking footage of Pauly Shore getting socked in the face is phony baloney according to police. The Odessa, Texas Police Department claims that an officer "had met with Mr. Shore prior to his set, and was asked to participate in the skit. The officer stated that the skit went as designed and that Shore was not injured in the designed skit." The incident, which took place during a comedy show in Odessa, took the Internet by storm after video was released on the Internet. It all went down after a female heckler started razzing Shore during the middle of his set. According to witnesses, Shore fired back, "Shut up bitch." That's when the woman's massive boyfriend stepped in. The man began defending his girlfriend and other people Shore allegedly picked on during the performance, saying "Hey, F*** you, he paid to be here just like the rest of us." Shore responded, "Well, first off, shut the f*** up f***ing hoss." Then, all hell broke loose. The man rushed onto the stage, despite several desperate pleas from Shore to leave him alone. Shore makes a last ditch effort to apologize before the man reaches back and plants one right on Pauly's kisser, knocking the comedian to the floor. Clutching his face, Pauly grabs the mic and calls the crowd "white trash," before walking off the stage. Reps for Shore would not comment when contacted by TMZ.
