Warner Bros. may cut 1,000 jobs

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Up to 1,000 employees on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank could be laid off anytime after Friday as a result of the Hollywood writers strike.

The studio distributed legally mandated warning notices on November 12, five days after the Writers Guild of America walkout began, stating that recipients could be subject to layoff after 60 days. The notices represent the first concrete sign that the strike could trigger massive job cuts across Hollywood

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman declined to say when or how many pink slips might eventually fly. She said the notices were mandated under the U.S. Department of Labor's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications (WARN) regulations, which are designed to give employees some advance notice of possible job eliminations in the event of a strike.

"These WARN notices were sent because, in certain circumstances, federal and California law can require employers to give notice of staffing changes," Warners spokeswoman Stacey Hoppe said. "Due to the ongoing WGA work stoppage, some studio divisions will have to lay off employees. We regret the impact this will have on our employees, and we hope to bring them back to work once the WGA strike ends."

Those receiving WARN notices are employees of Warner Bros. Studios Facilities, primarily production workers and others involved in lot maintenance and facility management.

News of the development circulated Tuesday, the 65th day of the writers strike. It wasn't immediately clear if any other major studios have issued similar notifications.

But there already have been widespread cost-cutting moves on most studio lots. At Fox and elsewhere, overtime pay has been curtailed for many positions, and industryites coast to coast have been finding their department budgets scrutinized more thoroughly than usual.

Elsewhere, TV production companies have shed workers as show after show has run out of scripts and shut down operations, and now film producers with overall deals on the various lots are coming under similar scrutiny.

Some TV studios, including Warner Bros. TV, are expected to send out letters shortly to terminate deals with select writer-producers. And on the film side, Universal recently parted ways with Vertigo Entertainment, the company behind the "Ring" and "Grudge" horror movies, upon the expiration of their production pact.

In the 1988 WGA strike, almost every studio eventually laid off scores of workers during the five-month work stoppage.

Wooohooo, go writers. Going out of your way to help your enemy to make everyone else's lives worse than yours. Hey, it must feel good to know that at least your pay is better than the ones who no longer have any pay.

That's my biggest issue with the whole thing - we all know that the studios are greedy bastards, that is nothing new, but at least everyone was getting compensated. Now thousands of people are out of jobs just so that one group can get a pay raise.

-NOT The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

seriously-
the writers have tried to come to the table with them.
-even offering demanding less money.
but the amptp wants to punish the writers for even daring to stand up to them.

All you people blaming the writers: The studios are the ones who don't want to negotiate. The studios are the ones who are making all the money off of the online viewings. The studios are the ones firing people. Why in the world are you blaming the writers? Blame the ones who are responsible: The STUDIOS.

What is it going to take to finally get the studios to sit down and talk with the writers and get this settled? The people that are really getting hurt here aren't the multi-millionaires, it's the people who are trying to afford their rent/mortgage and pay their bills. Come on, studio execs....

I am. As someone who doesn't watch broadcast television I find the situation hilarious. All these people are left with are crap reality television. But this reality television people watch is pretty shady to me. How can they not be scripted? If you ever see the Hills it sounds like bad acting more than anything.

Just give the writers the money they want, so WE can get our TV addictions back. Or I'll just boycott your damn "reality" shows.

Yes, I'm really that selfish.

The studio heads can and will hold out for as long as they need to b/c
1) they have the resources
2) they can rely on reality programming which is doing alright-—better, in some cases, eg Gladiators
3) it is in their best long-term interests not to give in.
The way I see it, writers have no/very little bargaining power. People are losing jobs and the local economy is suffering, and they do not have the resources to support a protracted strike. So what's the strategy? How do they plan to get the studio heads to cave? B/c the studios plan on keeping the hundreds of billions of dollars in future internet revenue, even if it means cancelling the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

The strike is really getting on my nerves, and its not a matter of taking away new episodes and diminishing the rerun episodes like The Office, SNL, or 30 rock etc off the air now cuz ill just watch the old episodes on dvd

My problem is that by now i honestly think that both sides are sounding really greedy. Its like i really think the studios do need that little extra money, the one the writers want, to be able to keep the company large and in charge and to keep paying everyone.

At first i really thought the WGA had a good point about it but now that tons of behind-the-scene employees are out of work and all that jazz its really greedy because you KNOW the writers are getting paid much more than those behind the scene employees who do makeup, costume, and whatever. and not to mention they get to work with famous people day by day for years and get paid much more than anyone i personally know who have what some consider "real jobs" (im not saying this, i want to be a writer one day, but ive been told its not a real job). My mom doesn't make anywhere near what they make at all and she spends hours even weekends at a desk making travel and booking plans and management for bankers and we struggle all the time financially - these people are making so much more living in hollywood, new york city and big expensive places.

But then again these studios rank in billions so billions vs. paying about 1,000+ writers 4cents is really nothing to ask for.

And end point i do agree with writers, i can't really speak for stuios - god knows what is going through their minds with this whole mess but when it drags on and people get fired for other peoples actions it gets annoying and i wish this would just end.

Right now while reality shows go on, ive got the new 24/7 THE-N on -
Degrassi, Kenan and Kel, The Fresh Prince, Radio Free Roscoe, Caitlins Way, Amanda Show, --- its always running on my tv. So while the strike progresses and The Office and 30 Rock are off air ... THE-N is on my TV :)

The studios are trying to make the writers look bad for striking but if all of the big wigs at the studios each took a cut in pay (not give up their salary, just a cut) and they redistributed the money then they probably wouldn't have to lay anybody off. Just sayin'.

"The notices represent the first concrete sign that the strike could trigger massive job cuts across Hollywood. "

If they gave them two months notice they were already going to do the layoffs, strike or no. They're legally required to give you 2 months notice OR pay you two months severance if they lay you off immediately.

This is just a nice convenient way to guilt the writer's guild.

Thank you, Writer's strike for forcing me to watch British Television. Without you, i'd have never watched Doctor Who, and that'd be a shame.

Also, I don't like superbitter Jon Stewart and A Daily Show. :(
